ULTIMATE Shanghai STREET FOOD Breakfast Tour in French Concession | Shanghai, China
I love China. I first visited Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai back in 2015 with my father. I fell in love with the food, culture, and history then, so I jumped at the chance to go back in April of 2019. This time, I visited Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou for a deeper dive into this unique place. I can’t wait to share it all with you!

On the morning of my second full day in Shanghai, I met back up with my boy Li from UnTour Food Tours. He took me on a mouthwatering street food breakfast tour! Come along with us as we explore more of Shanghai!
We started by watching people do tai chi in a park in the center of the former French Concession.
From there, we stopped at an old-school diner-like eatery with communal seating. We got 4 dishes, including soymilk; a sticky rice ball with shredded pork, duck egg, and vegetables; an oily Chinese churro; and a sweet Chinese flatbread.
I dipped my churro into the soymilk at first. It tasted like the churros in Spain, except without sugar. Then I tore up the rest and let it soak up the milk. It was fantastic!
Next was the dense sticky rice ball, which contained lots of spice, egg, and pickled vegetables. It was really filling!
I finished up with a bite of the crispy, biscuit-like flatbread. It was delicious, but I held off on the rest.
I watched them prepare and fry the churros outside. There were also fried empanada-like dumplings!
Next, we visited a hole-in-the-wall restaurant for a thick, savory, seven-layered pancake with a sweet, red chili sauce. It looked like a dish I’d had in Greece. I loved the crispiness on the outside and softness on the inside. The sauce was really rich and had some spice that snuck up on me!
Our next spot at least 20 varieties of sweet and savory buns for 2 Yuan/roughly $0.30 each. There was a long line, so we’d come back later.
Then, we grabbed my favorite Chinese breakfast food, jianbing. It’s a type of crepe that contains egg, vegetables, a cracker, and sweet and spicy sauces. It was packed with flavor and had a great balance between sweet and spicy! I loved the cilantro!
Next was shepherd’s purse and pork wontons. It contained a delicious soup and was topped with spring onions. It was so juicy and delicious!
Then I had a pot sticker containing soup and sesame oil. You take a nibble and suck the soup out because it’s so hot. The soup inside was so good! I added some chilies and waited for it to cool off. I loved it, especially the crispy bottom!
We also had two steamed buns: one with black sesame and one with egg custard. The black sesame almost tasted like chocolate while the egg custard was super sweet. I liked the egg custard more.
We were getting full, so we took a break from eating. Outside, I watched them prepare the pot stickers and grabbed some coffee. I got a cold brew with coconut water, which was so different and tropical. I loved the natural sweetness!
Then, we saw some lane houses, which are have black gates, huge frames, and courtyards. There were lots of different architectural styles in the area. They were beautiful!
Next, we passed through a popular wet market, an open supermarket where they sell lots of veggies, meat, poultry, and seafood. Then it was time for some hand-pulled noodles, which are always a spectacle!
Our next spot was a 24/7, family-run restaurant. The noodles were covered in a sticky sauce. I added some chili sauce, which was pungent but not too spicy. So good! They were some of the best noodles I’ve ever had!
Next was a tofu bamboo stir-fry with green pepper red onions. It consists of soymilk skin, which has a texture similar to bamboo. I loved the peppers!
Our final dish was xiaolongbao, or soup dumplings, at Loushi Dumpling Shop. They contain ginger. You dip them into black rice vinegar, nibble a corner, and suck out the soup so it doesn’t burn your tongue. They were amazing, but I was so full!
I hope you enjoyed this epic Shanghai street food tour of the French Concession! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel!

I explored it for a day with Collin Abroadcast, a fellow market fanatic. From Christmas decorations to children's toys to hardware and tools, we found a bunch of stuff that blew our minds.

Nanjing Road Pedestrain Street Shanghai
Nanjing Road Pedestrain Street Shanghai
Nanjing Road (Chinese: 南京路; pinyin: Nánjīng Lù; Shanghainese: Nuecin Lu) is the main shopping street of Shanghai, China, and is one of the world's busiest shopping streets.[1] The street is named after the city of Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu neighbouring Shanghai. Today's Nanjing Road comprises two sections, Nanjing Road East[2] and Nanjing Road West. In some contexts, Nanjing Road refers only to what was pre-1945 Nanjing Road, today's Nanjing Road East, which is largely pedestrianised. Before the adoption of the pinyin romanisation in the 1950s, its name was rendered as Nanking Road in English.
The History of Nanjing Road can be traced back to the year 1845.[3] At that time it was called Park Lane, which stretched from the Bund to He'nan Road. In 1854, it was extended to Zhejiang Road, and eight years later, once more extended to Xizang Road. In 1862, it was named formally Nanking Road[3] by the Municipal Council, which administered the International Settlement. In Chinese it was usually referred to as the Main Road (大马路). Around 1930 it was a bustling street with at least one reported casino (probably at nr. 181).[citation needed] In 1943 the International Settlement was annulled, and after World War 2 the government changed its name from Nanking Road to East Nanjing Road, meanwhile they also renamed the former Bubbling Well Road West Nanjing Road, and the general name of the two roads became Nanjing Road, comprising five kilometres total length.
At the beginning of the 20th century, eight big department stores were established along the street. A series of franchised stores were also set up at that time.
On 23 August 1937 a bomb was dropped on Nanjing Road by a Chinese plane in an attempt to lighten its load while being pursued by Japanese planes. The bomb hit two department stores, killing 612 people and injuring another 482.[3]
In 2000, as a part of the development plan held by the local government, Nanjing Road was renovated to be a characteristic pedestrian street. The width is about 28 meters and the total length is 1,200 meters, which extends from Middle He'nan Road to Middle Xizang Road.
In 2007, the Jing'an and Huangpu governments agreed to coordinate their policy to enhance the development of Nanjing Road, through a unique launching of a committee. This agreement followed a request by the committee of Champs-Elysees in the perspective of a friendship agreement between both famous streets.

Michelin Star CHINESE Breakfast at The PuLi Hotel & Spa + KING SUITE TOUR | Shanghai, China
In April of 2019, I had the pleasure of getting hired by Renault for a one-day job in Shanghai, China. I knew I had to spend more than a day in China, so I extended my trip to 12 days so I’d have enough time to explore a few cities properly. In addition to Shanghai, I also ate my way through Suzhou and Hangzhou and learned a lot about the history and culture along the way. It was such an amazing trip and I’m thrilled I get to share it with you!
After arriving back in Shanghai to begin a one-day job with Renault, my sixth day in China began with a phenomenal Chinese breakfast at their Michelin-star winning restaurant and a tour of my incredible suite at the luxurious PuLi Hotel & Spa! Come along with me as I show you what this immaculate hotel is all about!
The PuLi Hotel & Spa has 193 rooms, a gym, and the Phénix Restaurant, which has one Michelin Star. It’s so quiet inside. It puts you in Zen mode right away. Inside the lobby is a super long table and a gorgeous seating area. It’s so unique and so Chinese and is definitely one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at.
I was really hungry and wanted to beat the crowds, so I headed up to the Phénix Restaurant to get some breakfast! Their dining room is enormous, with two tables, a Continental-like breakfast, sofas, and a buffet with tons of options like buns, fruit, cheese, cold cuts, salmon, and more. There’s a larger room, but I took a private one instead.
At the bottom of the menu are seven Chinese specialties for 75 Yuan/roughly $11 U.S. each. I went with the doubled-boiled chicken broth pork wontons, stir-fried Shanghai noodles, and egg fried rice. I’d had the other four items, so I wanted to switch it up!
I drank a double espresso while I waited. I started with the pork wontons. They were a little different and came with super-thin noodles. There were only 3 wontons, but that’s how it is in Michelin star restaurants. The portions are always really small, but the quality of the food is always astronomical.
The wontons were like a pork ball with a little bit of wonton wrapper around it. It was kind of like a fish. Then, I went with the noodles, which kind of reminded me of the delicate glass noodles from Thailand. It was worth the price!
Then, I went with the egg fried rice, which came with burnt onions on top. It was my first fried rice dish in China! It was incredible. The egg was cut up throughout the dish. It wasn’t oily, either. It was just right and had a nice crunch for the onions. I wasn’t sure if it was worth the price, but it was tasty!
Next was the stir-fried Shanghai noodles. The sauce was like a red, glazy sauce and the noodles had spring onion and other vegetables in it.
Then I went over to the buffet to get a pork bun, a vegetable bun, a custard bun for dessert, and a pork rice dumpling. I grabbed some soy sauce and another coffee. I started with the pork rice dumpling, which is famous in Shanghai. It’s condensed and tastes more like a grain and feels like a pot sticker.
The pork bun was bite-sized and super soft. I love pork buns so much! The vegetable bun was next. It was shaped differently and contained some kind of meat that might have been pork. Amazing! Then I went with the custard bun, which was really sweet and was the perfect way to end my meal!
Then I went up to my room, a Grand King Suite on the 6th floor. My suite was so sick! There was a great bed, a huge couch where I could work, a table where I put my equipment, a flat screen TV you could move around, a lovely bathroom with a tub and sink and two closets. There was also a huge shower and a separate toilet. It was simple, elegant, and chic!
I also had a view of the park! The bathtub overlooks the park and is the perfect place to relax. I highly recommend staying at the PuLi Hotel & Spa when you come to Shanghai. It has everything you could possibly want!
If you enjoyed joining me for my incredible, Michelin-star Chinese breakfast and my King Suite tour, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

Economy of the Silk Road. Trade, shopping & Duty-free towns on China’s new Silk Road
More films about the Silk Road:
China is developing a unique blend of socialism and capitalism. The state-owned sector dominates but there has been a sudden surge in privately owned businesses operating in a new market economy. The two systems coexist in apparent harmony despite the seemingly contradictory ideologies of capitalism and communism. Private businesses began to appear after the country’s economic reforms of the late 1970s, ushered in by then premier, Deng Xiaoping. The emergence of private entrepreneurship led to rapid economic development for China. The country is still among the world’s fastest growing economies and is often the first to tap into new markets.
To further expand its regional economic influence, China has launched a programme to revive the famous old Silk Road. They are confident that the route will develop new international markets and forge new business alliances. The multifaceted programme involves improving road infrastructure and modernising key cities along the ancient Silk trading route. They are also creating more favourable conditions for business with incentives like company tax breaks and duty-free towns near the borders with neighbouring countries.
The project has been dubbed the ‘One Belt, One Road initiative’, and involves cooperation with more than 60, mostly neighbouring countries, with Russia among the major partners. RTD examines examples of Sino-Russian cooperation carried out under the ‘One Belt, One Road’ umbrella, including large-scale government projects and private trade deals with Russian customers.

Visiting China? I wrote up some things you should know before going --
Chinese wholesale market/mall w 23 Floors. Yes. It's real. It felt like walking thru Alibaba .com lol... I think a lot of the sellers in here are just wholesalers who take orders from sites like Aliexpress.com, alibaba.com, globalsources.com and other wholesale sites around the world.. bc they are always packing up boxes ...... well everywhere around the outskirts of the city of Guangzhou all you see are people moving boxes around haha..... was this better than just scouting for new product ideas on Alibaba.com? Not sure.. sometimes you can get lucky and find that amazingly cool thing.. but that can happen online too.... nonetheless it was a good experience to try out and see what the wholesale scene it all about.
...then we get a bite of some Chinese food, and end it with a preview of the next video, nightlife at O2 club at Party Pier.. click to watch next!

Shanghai Yuyuan Market Tour / 豫园旅游商城
Centered on the Yuyuan Garden and Old City God’s Temple, the Yuyuan Market / Yuyuan Tourist Mart area was the political, economic and cultural center in Shanghai from the Yuan Dynasty to the early Republic of China. It is considered the Roots of Shanghai. The mart originated from the Old City God’s Temple Market about 140 years ago and now has already developed into a complex mart comprised of ancient gardens, architectures, shops, restaurants and tourist attractions.
Yuyuan Tourist Mart was formerly Yuyuan Shopping Mall, which was not a company but an administrative organization to manage the shops in Yuyuan Garden. In 1980s, some of the shops in there were integrated to form an enterprise. In 1987, Yuyuan Shopping Mall was approved to become the first commercial holding company in Shanghai. In 1988, its shares were listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and it was the first listed commercial holding company in China. In 1992, to unify the operations and management of the shopping mall, Shanghai Yuyuan Tourist Mart Co., Ltd. was established and listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange to replace the old listed company. As at 19 November 2016, Yuyuan Tourist Mart is a constituent of SSE 180 Index.

China has been building what it calls the world's biggest camera surveillance network. Across the country, 170 million CCTV cameras are already in place and an estimated 400 million new ones will be installed in the next three years.
Many of the cameras are fitted with artificial intelligence, including facial recognition technology. The BBC's John Sudworth has been given rare access to one of the new hi-tech police control rooms.
