Monument to the People’s Heroes
There is a simple tall tower erected in Huangpu Park at the northern end of Bund alongside River Huangpu towards Waibaidu Bridge which is assigned as Monument to the People’s Heroes or Shanghai People Yingxiong Memorial in the line of another monument of the same name erected in Tiananmen Square in Beijing. This tower is erected as memorial to those soldiers and heroes who laid down their lives in the Second Opium War (1856-60) imposed by the allied powers of England, France and America against the Chinese to sell opium in China forcibly in return for silk, tea and porcelain.

Huangpu River Cruise:
Huangpu River, a symbol of Shanghai, originates in Dianshan Lake and empties into the Yangtze River at Wusongkou (mouth of Wusong River). It is 114 kilometers (71miles) long and 400 meters (0.25 miles) wide. It is ice-free year round. The river divides Shanghai into east and west. It is a silent eyewitness to Shanghai's history and its development.
Scenery along the River
A spectacular sight is that the two suspension bridges, Nanpu Bridge and Yangpu Bridge, appear to arch over the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, resembling 'Two dragons playing with a ball'.
The west bank (Puxi) of the Huangpu River is the cultural, residential and entertainment center of Shanghai. The Bund, Monument to the People's Heroes, Waibaidu Bridge and the oldest park in Shanghai - Huangpu Park, are located on the west bank. In addition, many historical buildings left over from Shanghai's colonial days have been preserved. The east bank of the river (Pudong) is the newer district of Shanghai and its financial and commercial hub. Steel and glass structures are abundant here. The Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Jin Mao Tower, skyscraper hotels, offices and malls of the Lujiazui Financial Zone are located on this side of the river.
Ships from all over the world dot the river. The busy wharfs and the 'three-layer waters' (or three-color waters) at Wusongkou are also within sight. The 'three-layer waters' is formed by the convergence of Huangpu River (gray white), Yangtze River (yellow) and the East Sea (green) during high tide.
Huangpu River Cruise MapWhen the sun sets, the river is veiled in the glittery neon lights on its banks. Cruising on the river in the evening, visitors can experience its silence and beauty under the moonlight.

Battle of Shanghai Recalled on Its 78th Anniversary
The Songhu Battle, one of the bloodiest battles during China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, was recalled on Thursday on the occasion of its 78th anniversary.
The shot to death of a Japanese navy officer near Hongqiao Airport by members of the Chinese Peace Preservation Corps triggered the three-month-long Battle on Aug. 13, 1937.
Using the death incident as an excuse, the Japanese Army dispatched vessels to the Huangpu River and Yangtze Estuary. Zhang Zhizhong, the then commander in chief of the Ninth Army Group, led his troop and besieged the Hongkou base of Japanese marines.
Japan sent in 300,000-men reinforcements in September and October, and on the Chinese side more than 70 divisions were involved at one time or another in the battle.
Chinese citizens from all walks of life, including businessmen, workers, students and celebrities, contributed to the battle in their own way. They established battlefield service groups and rescue groups, donated money and goods, helped treat the wounded and transport military supplies during the battle.
Various social groups were mobilized, and an anprecidanted number of people were united, so it was a historic battle of national salvation fought jointly by the Shanghai people and the army at the Songhu front, said Zhang Yun, director of Shanghai Society for History of Communist Party of China.
The Chinese troops held their ground until November, when they pulled out to prevent further casualties. Shanghai fell on Nov. 11.
The outbreak of the Songhu Battle lifted the curtain on the Oriental main field of World War II. So it played an important role in the world anti-Fascist war. The Battle holds an important historical status; it enhanced the Chinese people's confidence in victory and their determination in fighting the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, said Zhang.
As the first major engagement between China and Japan, the battle lasted three months and saw huge casualties on both sides. The Japanese had planned to seize Shanghai in three days but were demoralized by the battle that lasted three months. The battle drew the Japanese army's focus from north China to the east, granting enough time for China to move some of its vital industries further inland.
