Buy tickets online today to be at the front of the line for this incredible view of natures splendor.
Special Hours! Shangri La will be open on Sunday, June 23, 2013 from noon to 5:00 p.m. for this special event and on Monday, June 24, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Shangri Las Corpse Flower has been named Lenore, in honor of the poem from the American author Edgar Allen Poe that discusses proper decorum in the wake of the death of a young woman. This seems an appropriately macabre name!
Shangri La purchased a 9 pound tuber of the Amorphophallus titanum from Tindara Orchids in September 2011.Since then, it has been housed at the Production Greenhouse facility until its flowering in June 2013. It was then moved to the Exhibition/Classroom Greenhouse at Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center for public viewing. When first planted, it leafed out and that leaf did not die until late December 2012. The tuber entered a dormancy period that lasted 5 months. In late May with the tuber weighing approximately 31 pounds, a bud broke the soils surface, and by June 10, 2013, the staff was positive that Lenore was going to bloom. The peak bloom is expected to be during the week of June 24, 2013. Lenore will be on view starting June 20, 2013.
Dont miss this awesome opportunity to see a true wonder of nature.

TCEQ: 2013 TEEA Winner, Innovative Operations/Management - Texas Westmoreland Coal Company, Jewett

Driving down FM39 southeast of Waco, the first thing you might notice in the distance are the massive drag lines and displaced earth indicative of surface coal mining operations; just as quickly though, it becomes apparent that much of the landscape exhibits a simple beauty of open rolling terrain with pockets of surface waters, free grazing land, and glimpses of wildlife. Inspired, a team of civil engineers, wildlife biologists, landscape architects, and executive management has diligently worked to integrate this beauty into everyday operations. By working with landowners to demonstrate the importance of native species—both vegetative and wildlife—and by dedicating operations to achieve that goal, the Texas Westmoreland Coal Company is establishing itself as an industry leader in innovative conservation. Meet our winner in the Innovative Operations/Management category: Texas Westmoreland Coal Company, Jewett.

Shangri-La
Shangri-La is a fictional place described in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by British author James Hilton. Hilton describes Shangri-La as a mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun Mountains. Shangri-La has become synonymous with any earthly paradise, and particularly a mythical Himalayan utopia — a permanently happy land, isolated from the outside world. In the novel Lost Horizon, the people who live at Shangri-La are almost immortal, living years beyond the normal lifespan and only very slowly aging in appearance. The word also evokes the imagery of exoticism of the Orient. In the ancient Tibetan scriptures, existence of seven such places is mentioned as Nghe-Beyul Khembalung. Khembalung is one of several beyuls (hidden lands similar to Shangri-La) believed to have been created by Padmasambhava in the 8th century as idyllic, sacred places of refuge for Buddhists during times of strife (Reinhard 1978).
Some scholars believe that the Shangri-La story owes a literary debt to Shambhala, a mythical kingdom in Tibetan Buddhist tradition, which was sought by Eastern and Western explorers.

TSPP - Brazos Bend State Park - 2015 - First Visit
We met our friend Wendel at Brazos Bend State Park and were able to walk among the alligators. This park is full of wildlife and the wildlife is not only the deer, raccoons, bunnies, but it is also alligators. All of the, even the alligators, roam freely about the park. Because of this, there is no swimming, boating or wading in the water. However, there is plenty to do here with 37 miles of hiking-biking trails, a nature center, and an observatory. This is also one of the parks with the most volunteers. These volunteers are organized, ready to work, and fun! They have won the Texans for State Park's Best Friend's Group and totally deserve it.
The thing I liked most about this park was the greeness and the feeling of adventure. Between the alligators and the Spanish Moss covered pathways, I felt like I was in an adventure movie at times. The bathrooms are clean, camping sites are very nice for tenting and RVing, and the staff is knowledgeable. For more information on this park, please visit

TCEQ: 2013 TEEA Winner, Education - Texas State University, San Marcos - Bobcat Blend
For more info or to apply visit
In 2009, Texas State University students received a grant to study whether composting can be used to effectively destroy invasive water hyacinth and create nutrient-rich compost for application in agricultural and horticultural industries. Bobcat Blend students are not afraid to get their hands dirty. On top of conducting research that successfully demonstrated that this invasive species can be used as a primary feedstock to create compost within accepted industry quality standards, student activities diverted 57 tons of organic waste from the landfill last year and reduced university costs and fuel usage through fewer waste hauls. A portion of the generated compost is used in outdoor classrooms and on campus landscapes while Bobcat Blend sells the remainder to community gardens. Meet our winner in the Education category: Bobcat Blend Composting, Texas State University.
