Shaolin Zen Music Ritual
This magnificent and grand performance is created by many experts all over the world, which has rarely been seen so far. The background music made by the international musician, Tandun, is shocking and amazing with a strong ethnic feature. It is played by the Chinese National Symphony Orchestra and the Chinese Aiyue Orchestra.
The Chinese old-fashioned architectures on the mountain, such as the temples, bridges and the forest of pagodas are second to none of the temples on earth. The performers, wearing the traditional Chinese clothes, dance between the different sections of the stage, presenting a real experience of staying in an ancient temple and feeling the spirit of Zen.
The lights change according to the music and the development of the story, which is one of the highlights of this performance. The mountain, performers, buildings, forests, waterfalls, and other lifelike decorations on the stage look fantastic and mysterious.
Under the fabulous accompaniments of the lights and music, the scenes of the four seasons on the stage change flexibly. The ancient temples in the snow at night, the streams and waterfalls, the moonlight on the forests and the thunder are all vivid.
In addition, you can see real Shaolin Kung Fu in this performance, such as the famous kids’ Kung Fu, Tai Chi. As a result, hundreds of monks sing, chant and pray under the instruction of the old abbot. You will be touched in this quiet and peaceful atmosphere and feel calm in your heart.
It includes 5 Chapters
#1 Water
The story of this chapter originated from water. The shadow of Damo (the ancestor of Chinese Zen Buddhism) appears and the washerwoman steps out after the song to recite the Tang Dynasty's poems. The singing of Bodhi, the noise from the mountain after rain, and the conversation between the monks and the common people, all melt and combine in a good way.
#2 Wood
The sound of the wooden temple blocks breaks the peace of the ancient temples, telling a story of the development process of the Shaolin martial arts monks. The shepherdess comes out drifting the flocks up the mountain. She brings the beauty of the common world to this pure Buddhist world.
#3 Wind
The Wind Chapter starts the story with a long history. In this chapter, you can have a great feast for your eyes of Shaolin Kung Fu and the scenery on the lively stage and Mount Songshan.
#4 Light
The performing effect of the lights shows perfectly in this chapter. The snow scenery of the mountain and the forest, and the shadow of the pagoda and the old monks, portrays a harmonious picture along with Zen stories for you.
The monks standing on the plum blossoms evoke a feeling of breaking life's limitations and becoming the elf between heaven and earth, flying to eternity. What's more, the auspicious lights express the compliments and praise to everything in the world.
#5 Stone
This singing chapter brings this music ritual to its highlight. At the end of the performance, the light of Buddhism shines and everything turns harmonious and peaceful.

Amazing music from Chinese theater titled the Zen Music Shaolin Grand Ceremony. If you find yourself travelling to the Shaolin Monastery in Dengfeng, China, go see it. Highly recommended!

Zen Music Shaolin Grand Ceremony
A symphony of martial arts, music, dance and religion comes alive nightly in the valley of Song Mountain, where Zen (Chan) Buddhism originated, and the 1,500-year-old Shaolin Temple is located.
It's an outdoor light-and-sound show featuring a cast of 500, including monks from the world-renowned temple and local folk. The troupe presents five movements - water, wood, wind, light and stone - to symbolise the spirit of Zen, the meditative form of Mahayana Buddhism.
As lone monks meditate in different spots of the natural backdrop throughout the spectacle, scenes of life in ancient China are played out: grinning children perform flips, maidens wash clothes by the stream, goatherds herd their flock, and serene ladies play music.
Amid crisp mountain air the visual/aural fest unfolds, heightened by the organic sounds of water, the striking of wooden fish and stone gongs, flags fluttering, and Tibetan music.
The incandescent show builds up to a high-energy and synchronised wushu (kung fu) demonstration by shaven-headed Shaolin warriors. They punch and kick and wield sticks too (a weapon of Shaolin kung fu). Then, an exciting aerial sword fight illuminates the night.
The extravaganza takes place at a mock village complete with a pagoda, a martial arts school, a bridge and a rivulet at the vast US$15-million amphitheatre.
Seated on a rustic bench and caressed by the cool mountain breeze, I was blown away by the sheer richness and scale of the production that boasts music and art direction by Oscar-winning Tan Dun (who bagged Best Original Score for Ang Lee's 2000 martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).
One will feel their equilibrium restored, regardless of their faith - if only for just 70 minutes spanning the show.
(China part 3) DengFeng & Shaolin Temple: Pictures, Music, Videos
When I got to Hong Kong airport, I said by goodbyes to Mrs. Helen, tipped her, and thanked her for a wonderful experience in Hong Kong. I then boarded a plane to Zhengzhao, China—my next destination. When I landed, and after an awkward incident at customs—which included a thermometer where it shouldn’t be (my armpit)—I met up with my guide Snow. We walked out of the airport terminal to meet up with the driver and we drove an hour & ½ to Dengfeng. Dengfeng is best known for being the host city to the Shaolin Temple and has over 5 dozen kung-fu schools there, hosting over 50 thousand students. Checking into the “kung-fu hotel” at Dengfeng, Snow suggested I go to a show put on by the Shaolin Monks that night in a valley of Song Mountain. I accepted and went to my room to take a nap and chill out, watching a Jet Li movie playing on TV. That evening, I met up with Snow to go see the show (01:27). I was completely blown away; hands down the best live show I’ve seen in quite some time. Hosted by the monks, the participants were mostly students from the local kung-fu schools in Dengfeng. After the show, I went back to the hotel to catch some sleep. The next morning, I went downstairs to grab some breakfast. When I arrived, I saw about a dozen people standing up, taking sides, with the young woman, her boyfriend/spouse and an older man shouting back and forth at each other. Apparently, this dude upset the young woman and had her boyfriend holding her back from attacking him! Eventually police showed up and kept everyone in check. Reminded me of a family reunion that I went to a while back lol!
After the entertaining breakfast, I met up with Snow and we made our way to the Shaolin Temple (17:50). This is a place made famous from movies like Enter the Dragon, 36th Chamber of Shaolin, as well as countless other movies. However, for the monks who reside there, it’s a sacred temple that they use to practice Zen Buddhism. Once we enter through the main entrance of the temple, Mountain Gate, there’s a courtyard with trees, mainly Ginko which have holes in it from monks who practice a rare form of Qigong that allows the practitioner to do one-finger handstands…true story! After that we pass through Devaraja Hall which contains the Heavenly Kings who protect the temple from evil. The ones here are unique, explained Snow, because unlike most temples they’re depicted literally stomping evil under their feet (19:08). Another feature of the Temple is two trees that have been growing side by side for hundreds of years(20:56). Legend has it that a monk from Japan came hundreds of years ago and planted a seed next to a tree that was planted by a Shaolin monk. Normally, the stronger tree continues to grow, taking the nutrients needed for the other tree to grow and in affect, killing it. By a miracle, these trees grow in harmony with each other rather than killing the other one. Snow said it’s a reminder to not hate the Japanese because of the whole WWII thing, at one time they were friends and will be again. The last feature you get to in the temple is the Thousand-Bodhisattva Hall. This hall is famous for its “Five Hundred Arhats Worshipping Pilu” mural and indents in the stone floor from monks practicing kung-fu for centuries (21:41). After leaving the temple, the Forest of Dagobas (22:43) is located not far from it and is used to bury the Abbots when they die.
After that, we headed to a performance given by young monks. They demonstrated Eagle, mantis, and monkey forms (26:23). After that, they took some amateurs on stage and gave them kung-fu lessons (28:11). Next were Qigong demonstrations such as breaking metal over their heads (30:16), bending sharp spears using their neck (30:53), and throwing a pin through a sheet of glass (31:34). Finally, they did a general demonstration using several weapons that they practice with at Shaolin (31:54). The whole thing was excellent.
After the show, it started to rain and eventually became a downpour (34:24). The streets soon became flooded with the Yellow river and me and Snow’s shoes became soaked from making our way back to the entrance gate to meet up with the driver. At one point, I had to escort Snow—who weighed probably 110 pounds “soaking wet” (literally in this case!), across the street due to the strong current!
This place certainly lived up to my expectations—and more! For the music in Dengfeng, I used the actual music from the performance, mostly Tan Dun, except for the first one. I tried to use the audio from the video but thanks to some constantly chattering gentlemen in the row in front of me, I was forced to find the concert music then overlay it to match the action on the video. The Shaolin part has a mixture of monk chants and music from movies made about Shaolin.

Thanks to @Qufu Shaolin Kung Fu School in China, where we train Shaolin Kung Fu daily, we were able to visit Shaolin Temple and enter the places, which are unavailable for tourists. All this happened during Zhengzhou International Shaolin Wushu Festival, one of the biggest Wushu Competitions in China and around the world.

Tong Bi Quan means spreading power from the back boxing because it imitates the back of an ape and the arms of a monkey to generate power by moving like a tiger jumps and falling like an eagle catches to attack high positions quickly and skillfully.

This was an eye opening trip (to say the least) from the view of a Shaolin monk. Sifu’s home is the Shaolin Temple.
Led by Sifu Yuan (see below for more info), our group visited the local area of Dengfeng, Luoyang, and Kaifeng--near the capital city ZhengZhou, a 1.5hr flight, south-west of Beijing. Our 10 day trip included the historical Shaolin Temple, Shaolin Kungfu/Wushu shows, a 3-day Zen retreat at Songshan ShaoLin Revelation Mountain Household, various historical sites dating back over 1,500 years, traditional & local food, and amazing scenery at Tantou Baoquan mountains.

This is the incredible 10 mile parade from the city of Dengfeng to the Zen Music Ritual outdoor performance stage near the Shaolin Temple, featuring over 80,000 martial arts Shaolin kung fu practitioners and students! This was part of the pre-ceremonies of the main 12th Zhengzhou International Shaolin Wushu Festival opening ceremonies.

Shaolin Zen Musical Theater
This is the largest shaolin theater in the world. It is located on the side of the famous song shan mountain just outside of deng feng and a couple miles from the shaolin temple.

Mount Shaoshi and smaller temples in the woods were my favourites, but the equanimity and grace with which the monks deal with curiosity of us tourists and the commercial side of it all is certainly admirable.
