Walter Hackney: O-STATE Stories
Walter Hackney, a 1959 graduate of Oklahoma State University (OSU) with a degree in agriculture, recalls his youth and contracting polio which altered his career trajectory. He discusses transferring to OSU, being a member of a national champion livestock judging team, and having a terrific advisor in Dr. Robert Totusek. Hackney shares memories of participating in loading a bull into a Student Union elevator, of carrying twenty-three hours his last semester, and getting his first job after graduating. He also talks about his successful career. Hackney was interviewed in 2015 as part of O-STATE Stories, a project of the Oklahoma Oral History Research Program at the OSU Library chronicling the rich history, heritage and traditions of Oklahoma State University. Elisabeth Stukenborg - 2012 OSU Outstanding Senior
Elisabeth Stukenborg is an English and history major from Tulsa, Okla. She is the daughter of Bernie and Charlotte Stukenborg.
Stukenborg has served as president of the College of Arts and Sciences Student Council and senate chair of the Student Government Association. She has also been involved in Kappa Delta, International Justice Mission and OSU Homecoming. Stukenborg has volunteered her time with the Sheerar Museum of Stillwater History and the Victim Witness Center of the Tulsa District Attorney's Office. She served as a Stillwater Young Life Leader and an intern to an Oklahoma U.S. Senator. Stukenborg is an OSU Lew Wentz Scholar and an Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Academic Scholar. She received an honors degree from the English department, a nomination for the Truman Scholar Competition and is a member of the Pi Kappa Phi Honors Fraternity.
Oklahoma State University, an experimental and research-oriented land-grant university, has trained and challenged me as a scholar and as a leader, Stukenborg says. As I graduate as a scholar of the liberal arts and as an advocate and leader of my peers, I am indebted to the professors, organizations, and experiences that invested in and shaped me in my five years at OSU.
Stukenborg plans on pursuing her education in a joint juris doctorate and English master's program with the intention to serve as an advocate for others in public service.
The Outstanding Senior award recognizes students who distinguish themselves through academic achievement; campus and community activities; academic, athletic or extra-curricular honors or awards; scholarships and work ethic during their time at Oklahoma State University.
The OSU Alumni Association Student Awards and Selection Committee selected the 15 winners after meeting with the 40 Seniors of Significance selected in the fall of 2011 and reviewing their applications.
A public banquet honoring the Outstanding Seniors was held on April 23 at the ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center in Stillwater. For more information about the OSU Alumni Association's Student Awards program, visit
Bill Maddux - Spotlighting Oklahoma Oral History Project
Bill Maddux was interviewed in 2011 as part of the Spotlighting Oklahoma Oral History Project. In 1941 Bill moved with his family to Stillwater, Oklahoma. He completed his senior year of high school in Stillwater, graduating in 1942. While his father was a pharmacist at Kennecut Drugstore, Bill worked down the street at D & V Drugstore. In an excerpt from his oral history interview, Bill talks about his short time at Stillwater High, his work at the D & V, and scooping up leftover popcorn with others after closing time at the Camera Theater.
