Snoopet 215 - Sherlock Holmes Statue
Daily snippets of Snoop the Dog.
Not a crazy huge fan, but hey, it's Sherlock Holmes! He's worth a look at least. This statue is right in front of Baker Street Tube, and next to the Sherlock Holmes Museum.
At one point I had planned on reading all of the Holmes books, but then I read a book about Houdini that outlined a long and weird feud he had with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle over physics. Kind of put me off. Now that I live in London though, I may have to rethink that.
Sherlock Holmes Museum -221B Baker Street, London walk-through tour
Is it Jeremy Brett, Benedict Cumberbatch or Robert Downey Jnr..or is it the written works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? Whichever Holmes is your favourite, you will want to visit The Sherlock Holmes Museum in London, the spiritual home of the great detective.
The museum is located at 221b Baker Street, London (where else!) in a 4 storey Victorian house, built in 1815. Step through the door and you are transported back in time. The house is authentically decorated as if Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr Watson had just stepped out to investigate one of their cases. On display are many familiar objects from the great detective’s stories. My film is a tour around the entire Sherlock Holmes Museum and shop.
The “consulting detective” Sherlock Holmes first appeared in print in 1887 in “A Study in Scarlet”, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle went on to write 4 novels and 56 short stories featuring the great detective, as narrated by his trusted companion Dr Watson. The short stories, set in Victorian/Edwardian England were popularised in The Strand Magazine. Conan Doyle wrote about his crime-solving hero for 10 years before killing him off in 1893 in “The Final Problem”, then followed an 8 year silence, but due to public pressure Sherlock Holmes returned in 1901, in his most famous adventure, “The Hound of the Baskervilles.”
The museum takes up the top 3 floors, including the sitting room and bedrooms of Holmes and Watson. The majority of the rooms are used as exhibit rooms, including life-size figures of Holmes, Watson and other characters from the books, among the figures you may recognise:
Professor Moriaty.
The King of Bohemia and Irene Adler.
Dr Jabez Wilson From The Redheaded League.
Brunton from The Musgrave Ritual.
Dr Grimesby Roylott from The Speckled Band.
Charles Augustus Milverton and his assailant.
Such is the detective’s popularity that stories featuring the most well-known detective have been adapted for film, television, radio and even video games. Plays featuring Sherlock Holmes have been appearing on stage since 1899 and over 70 actors have played Sherlock Holmes on film. Basil Rathbone starred in 14 popular Hollywood films in the 1930s and 40s, bringing the character to a world-wide cinema audience. An enigmatic performance but often let down by the material, which now seems somewhat dated. In 2009 Guy Ritchie reinvented the film franchise, with a re-imagining of the great detective using the enigmatic talents of Robert Downey Jnr, perfect for a modern audience. On television Jeremy Brett’s faithful portrayal of Holmes epitomised the tormented soul and true essence of the great detective and was well-supported by David Burke, then Edward Hardwicke as Watson. In 2010 the talented Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffatt, brought the detective into the modern day, mixing old and new elements superbly and with a terrific performance from Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes.
Holmes' creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a doctor and author, born in Edinburgh in 1859, where he later studied medicine. He went into medical practice in 1882 in Plymouth and then Porstmouth, where he started writing for publication. His first Sherlock Holmes story was sold in 1886.
Purchase your tickets inside the museum to the right of 221b Baker Street. The museum is a little pricey especially if you visit as a family but I feel that as a fan this is something that has to be done at least once. Visit the museum website for current prices. The museum does not include any displays of Holmes in the movies or on TV, which might be a nice addition, and focuses primarily on location and characters from the stories.I would allow yourself between 1-2 hours to browse around the house. I did not have to wait to enter the museum but I understand that at busy times you may expect to queue as the house can only hold a certain number of visitors. The museum is located near Baker Street tube station, where there is a statue of Sherlock Holmes which is worth seeing.

Talking Statues Uk
Talking statues across London and Manchester will clear their throats and begin speaking for themselves. Public interventions company Sing London, with funding from the Digital R&D Fund for the Arts. A group of heavyweight writers was signed up to put words into the statues mouths while familiar figures of stage and screen recorded the monologues that give voice to 35 majestic men and women (plus two cats and a goat), transforming them from stony strangers into garrulous fountains of living history for a year.
A marble child in Manchester Central Library, for instance, will produce a monologue written by Jacqueline Wilson and spoken by Dr Who's Jenna Coleman, while the first world war Tommy in London's Paddington Station has been brought to life by Tony Harrison and actor Patrick Stewart. I hadn't planned to have all these stars, says the company's artistic director, Colette Hiller. I just wanted to get the technology right.
It's technology that aims to bring you physically as well as emotionally closer to the subjects. Once in front of a statue, a heritage plaque on its plinth offers you three ways to hear its story : a link to type into your web browser, a QR barcode or a near field communication (NFC) chip that can be tapped with any supporting phone to trigger a speech. You don't need to download anything, explains Hiller. It's all about having a spontaneous moment. Your phone will just ring and it will say, 'Sherlock Holmes is on the phone for you' and the monologue begins.
The NFC technology is also used for instant, short-range radio communication for contactless payments or Oyster cards, but Hiller believes this will be the first time it has been used in a cultural context. The manner in which the data is transferred to the phone is another technical coup for the project, whose digital particulars have been designed by a specialist museum-guide developer called Antenna Lab. The big secret is that it isn't really a phone call. It's an audio file disguised as a phone call, explains Hiller, conspiratorially, but the experience is seamless.
Organising the project, however, was not quite so smooth. Access to Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela and the other inhabitants of Parliament Square was denied, according to Hiller, on the grounds that the plaques would have been disrespectful. Jeremy Paxman was furious on my behalf! says Hiller; Paxman has written and voiced a monologue for the statue of radical politician John Wilkes. It worked out, though, because we had to look further afield and ended up with a better mixture of old and modern statues.
Aside from breathing new life into weary landmarks, the project is also designed to encourage listeners to visit nearby museums. A statue of Queen Victoria, for example, whose monologue is written by the Observer's Elizabeth Day, encourages listeners to visit the Victoria exhibition at Kensington Palace. Data from the project will be collected and analysed by researchers at the University of Leicester's School of Museum Studies, to gauge its success.
With monologues ranging from the comic (Samuel Johnson's cat, Hodge, voiced by Nicholas Parsons) to the tragic (Alan Turing, voiced by Russell Tovey), the project offers passers-by a new way to explore the legacies of the great and the good. Look up! says Isaac Newton outside the British Library, in the commanding tones of Simon Russell Beale. Most of the things you're doing now, like listening to me on your mobile phone, can only be done because of my discoveries.

Why Are Some UK Postboxes Gold?
I've skipped 'N' and 'O'. Although I intended to skip 'N' anyway, my video for 'O' just didn't come together and so I decided to move straight on rather than dwell / upload a bad video. I think at the end of the series I'll have an epilogue episode about the 4 letters I missed (F, I, N & O).
'A Great British Adventure' is a series of videos that have taken me all over the UK. The videos are based on the new A-Z 10p coins - they aren't videos about the coins, rather, they use them as a sort of contents page. They will be uploaded every 3 days for the next 3 months or so, although there will be some miscellaneous videos in between.
