Chinese Catholics celebrate Our Lady of She-Shan 5-14-12 ~ Currents
Parishes across Brooklyn and Queens are holding celebrations for Mary during the month of May. For Chinese Catholics, that takes on added significance as, in their home country, they are not allowed to worship freely. They are required to join the government-approved Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, which is not recognized by the Vatican. Groups of Catholics in communion with Rome still exist in China, and are part of what is known as the underground Church there.
Here in the U.S., it is a much different story and faithful Chinese Catholics certainly know how to celebrate. Last week, they held their fourth procession for Our Lady of She-Shan. Back in China, the Basilica of Our Lady She-Shan was built in thanksgiving for Mary having saved Shanghai, where She-Shan Hill is located, from anti-Christian massacre. Here in the Brooklyn Diocese, the celebration took to the streets of Flushing.
Sheshan Cathedral, Shanghai
Catholic Church in Shanghai China
This video was shot after the 12 o'clock Mass at Saint Ignatius Cathedral in Xujiawia, Shanghai. This is the only English Mass, there are maybe 10 Masses a week in total. The Mass was about the same as a Mass in the States except almost every seat was taken. I would guess that about 30% of those in attendance were not Chinese. The Cathedral was build by French Jesuits in 1910.

We took advantage of the good weather by heading back to the Sheshan area of Shanghai for the day. We were last there in August 2014 to spend a day at Playa Maya water park, which was great fun! This time we checked out SheShan Basilica, which is located in SheShan National Forest Park. It was a quick 25-30 minute walk to the Basilica. Our favorite part of the day was actually the walk back to the bus station. We took the scenic route, exiting the park from the west gate and walking around past the south gate and toward the east gate, where we originally entered the park. The road is beautifully lined with trees and very quiet with just a couple cars and bicyclists sharing the road with us.
To get to the park and basilica, take subway line 9 to SheShan Station. On the same side of the road as the metro station, board bus No. 9 and take it three stops to the Forest Hotel stop. The bus ride costs just one RMB! What a bargain!
Apologies for the graphic content at 4:33! We don't mean to offend anyone. We just want to provide a more holistic idea of some of the culture shock that expats have to deal with not only in China but we're sure in any country that is not your own. We also hope our reaction to the incident doesn't offend anyone. It was a genuine reaction caught on camera, a reaction to something we had never seen before. Glo has calmed down, and she is now pretty much over the incident...sort of...LOL.
As always, thank you for watching!!
See you in four days for our next upload!
Sabrina's Travel Vlog: Sheshan Mountain, Shanghai
There's endless travel opportunities for teachers in China! In this series Sabrina Samra (primary school teacher in Shanghai) documents her trips around China and South East Asia. In this edition a wonderful day-trip to a very local place to visit: Sheshan Mountain :)
More information about our programme:
Sheshan 佘山 is a 328 feet (100 m) hill in the city of Shanghai in eastern China. On top of the mountain is Our Lady of China Catholic church, Sheshan Basilica, which was built there between 1925 and 1935 following its establishment as a chapel in the 1850s by European missionaries.
I, alongside fellow friends, had a beautiful day trip exploring Sheshan's Mountain as well as the surrounding National/Forest Park.
It was during class last year that I first heard about this place. I asked my grade three's, Have you climbed a mountain? They ALL referred to Sheshan. I asked my Chinese friends, and they told me about the place and even came along with us for the day-trip! It was such a lovely day :)
Shanghai has many hidden gems, & this happens to be one of it's most natural, beautiful and tucked away places!
Follow my adventures:
Shanghai's Xuhui District / 徐汇区
The Xuhui District / 徐汇区 is centered on Xujiahui, after which it is named. Xujiahui was historically land owned by Ming dynasty bureaucrat and scientist Xu Guangqi, and later donated to the Roman Catholic Church. Being the core of Catholic Shanghai, the Xuhui District formed, together with neighboring Luwan District, the former French Concession of Shanghai. Vestiges of the French influence can still be seen in the St. Ignatius Cathedral of Shanghai, Xuhui College, the Xujiahui Observatory, and some remaining boulevards and French-style districts.

The Sheshan Basilica, officially the National Shrine and Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Sheshan (Chinese: 佘山進教之佑聖母大殿; pinyin: Shéshān jìnjiào zhī yòu shèngmǔ dàdiàn) and also known as Basilica of Mary, Help of Christians is a prominent Roman Catholic church in Shanghai, China. Its common name comes from its location on the western peak of Sheshan Hill, located in Songjiang District, to the west of Shanghai's metropolitan area.
It was previously romanized as Zo-sè Basilica (pronounced Zoh-seh), using the Shanghainese pronunciation of 佘山 (Sheshan). Inside the shrine, the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Mary Help of Christians is venerated as the patroness of the basilica, along with the recently reconstructed icon of Our Mother of Sheshan, both venerated by Chinese Catholics.

Shanghai Moore Memorial Church (Mu'en Church) / 上海基督教沐恩堂
The Shanghai Moore Memorial Church, also known as Mu'en Church, is located on Xizang Zhong Lu, in the middle of department stores right across from People's Square. Built by the only Shanghai-based architect anyone knows, Laszlo Hudec, to house an estimated 1,000 worshippers, the Church was completed in 1931. It has built up a local membership that numbers in the thousands since reopening in 1979, after its closure during the Cultural Revolution. It's now a non-denominational church.
