Shinola LLC is an American lifestyle brand which specializes in watches, bicycles, and leather. Founded in 2011, its name is a nod to the defunct Shinola shoe polish company that operated in the early- and mid-20th century. Shinola is owned and operated by Bedrock Brands, a privately owned Texas investment group, and was launched by Tom Kartsotis,[1] one of the founders of the Fossil Group retail conglomerate.[2]
Today, every Shinola product is, technically speaking, assembled in the United States.[6][8][9] However, many parts used in Shinola watches are manufactured in China and Thailand. These factories are owned by companies based in Switzerland.[6][10][11] At the time of the company's founding in 2011, no American watchmaker had produced watches at scale since the late 1960s, with U.S.-based watchmaking relegated to select specialty companies such as RGM in Lancaster, PA.[12][13] Shinola's current tagline is Where American is Made,[A] and the company has actively utilized Detroit's reputation as a worldwide manufacturing hub in its marketing of the brand.[15]
The company's headquarters and watch factory are housed within the College for Creative Studies (CCS) on the fifth floor of the Alfred A. Taubman Building in Detroit, a former automotive research lab.[16] Shinola's occupation of the CCS space at first occurred by accident when Bedrock officials, seeking a manufacturing site after resolving to rebuild Shinola, visited the College and the elevator unexpectedly opened on the fifth floor, which was vacant at the time. They decided to transform the 30,000 square feet of vacant space into their watch factory and company headquarters.[6][8] To build out the watch factory, the company partnered with Ronda, which also brought in expert watchmaking veterans to train Shinola's watch assemblers, all of whom had no prior experience in watchmaking. Currently, the factory has the capacity to finish the assembly of 500,000 watches a year.[17]
Most of the workers assembling watches are local Detroiters, and many of them come from the auto business.[18] Since the company's founding in 2011, it has grown to over 400 people.[19]

Shinola Barred From Using “Built in Detroit” Label
The Federal Trade Commission ruled last week, that lifestyle brand Shinola didn't meet the standard to display it's famous Made in Detroit label on its products. The company, which makes watches, bags, and bicycles will instead have to label its watches Built in Detroit of Swiss-imported parts. Shinola's founder responded with a statement posted online complaining about discrepancies in using the made in the USA label on different kinds of products. Some critics, however, think the change is for the better, saying it frees the brand from what they see as a perverted sense of authenticity.

Tiny Engines: Shinola Brings Watchmaking to Detroit and to Barneys New York
By now, you've probably heard that there are things happening in Detroit. Things where there didn't used to be things. Big things. Good things.
Guerrilla gardens, boutique hotels, souped-up bowling alleys, festivals (music, film, literary—you name it), espresso bars, hybrid cars and, just wait for it, even a Whole Foods. It's a comeback story that the entire country—Barneys New York included—is rooting for.
So when Shinola, a new watch, bicycle and leathergoods brand, emerged out of the city this spring, it didn't take long to catch our eye. When I went to Detroit and visited Shinola's home base, I knew that something good was happening there, said fashion director Tomoko Ogura. The intention is good, the story is authentic, and there is heart and soul.
That last part is the lynchpin. Shinola, and any company that chooses to manufacture here in the States for that matter, is committed not only to job creation, but also—and perhaps most importantly—building something that lasts.
The Window visited Shinola's Detroit headquarters to see it for ourselves. After a tour of the factory floor and a few laps around the office on Shinola-made bicyles, we sat down to speak with creative director Daniel Caudill. Shop Shinola at Barneys.com:

Tour de Troit MLK 2016 bike ride Detroit, MI, GoPro HD
Short segment of the Tour de Troit Martin Luther King Jr. memorial bike ride, Jan 18, 2016. Starting from Wayne State University in Midtown Detroit, we rode down to the Detroit River and back. This segment covers the middle portion of the trip, just before my rear derailleur cable froze up. The temperature was around -10C. A very special thanks to Wayne State University's Public Safety department for the escort, and Tour de Troit for organizing a fun event.
