열차여행을 하기로 했다. 산리쿠 철도는 태평양 해안을 따라 달리는 지방철도다. 바닷가 고장을 누비며 달리는 열차는 차창 밖으로 절경을 감상할 수 있어 사람들에게 인기가 좋다. 창가의 좌석은 원하는 대로 방향을 바꿀 수 있어 열차여행을 즐기기에 제대로다. 달리는 열차의 차창은 멋진 스크린이 된다. 차창 너머로 보이는 여유로운 풍경이 나를 낭만에 젖어 들게 한다. 또 다른 열차 칸은 복고풍의 색다른 느낌이다. 역 승무원이 바구니에 물건을 파는 모습이 왠지 우리네 기차의 옛 모습을 보는 듯, 정겹다. 다양한 테마열차가 운행중인 산리쿠 철도는 어떤 열차를 타게 될지 기대심을 불러일으킨다. 드넓게 펼쳐진 바다가 내 마음까지 시원하게 만든다. 기차 너머로 보이는 멋진 경치 때문에 이동하는 내내 시간 가는 줄 몰랐다.

Life in Japan: Kakogawa, Hyogo 4K Cinematic | Japan vlog | A7RIII
I thought it would be cool to show people what Japan looks like outside of the major cities, like Osaka and Tokyo, so I put together this video using clips from my first ever outdoor Japan vlog. Although I don't really consider this town as the Japanese countryside a lot of the local people I know do. If you saw my A Day in my Life in Japan vlog then you'll know that these clips were filmed the day after Typhoon Jebi. The park that runs along the Kakogawa River is usually a really popular hangout spot for people around here, so I always like riding my bike through here to see what's going on.

The Asama-Sansō incident - Part 2/3
The Asama-Sansō incident was a hostage crisis and police siege in a mountain lodge near Karuizawa, Nagano prefecture, Japan that lasted from February 19, 1972 to February 28, 1972. The police rescue operation on the final day of the standoff was the first marathon live television broadcast in Japan, lasting 10 hours and 40 minutes.
Japan's leftist student movement in the 1960s pervaded Japan's universities, and, by late in the decade, had become very factionalized, competitive, and violent. After a series of incidents in which leftist student groups attacked and injured or killed law enforcement officials and the general public, Japan's national police agency cracked down on the student groups, raiding their hideouts and arresting dozens in 1971 and 1972. Attempting to conceal themselves from the police, a core group of radicals from the URA retreated to a compound in Gunma Prefecture during the winter of 1972.
In the second week of February 1972 at the compound, URA's chairman Tsuneo Mori and vice-chairman Hiroko Nagata (sometimes referred to as Yoko Nagata) initiated a violent purge of the group's members. In the purge, Nagata and Mori directed the beating deaths of eight members and one non-member who happened to be present. Six other members were tied to trees outside where they froze to death in the frigid mountain winter air. On February 16, police arrested Mori, Nagata, and six other URA members at the compound or at a nearby village. Five others, armed with rifles and shotguns, managed to escape, fleeing on foot through the mountains towards Karuizawa in nearby Nagano prefecture. The five fugitives were Kunio Bandō, 25, a graduate of Kyoto University, Masakuni Yoshino, 23, a senior at Yokohama National University, Hiroshi Sakaguchi, 25, a dropout of Tokyo Suisan University, Jirō Katō, 19, and his brother Saburō Katō, 16.
Sighting the police pursuit near the community of Karuizawa on February 19, the five radicals took refuge in a vacation lodge called Asama Sansō (Asama Mountain Villa) owned by Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing. The radicals entered the lodge and discovered Yasuko Muta, the 31-year old wife of the lodge's caretaker. She was the only person in the building, as her husband was walking the dog and the lodge's guests had gone ice skating. The radicals took Muta hostage at gunpoint and barricaded the building.
The police experienced difficulty in breaching the radicals' defenses on the top floor and hours later had not made much headway. The police directed high-pressure water hoses at the top floor, gouging out large holes in the building's walls and drenching the radicals and Muta with cold water. During this time, the radicals kept up continuous gunfire on the assaulting police and threw homemade bombs at them. Two policemen, Shigemitsu Takami, 42, and Hisataka Uchida, 47, were shot and killed and 15 other policemen were injured. A civilian observer who intruded into the area without police permission was also shot, reportedly by the radicals, and fatally wounded.
As darkness fell, the police breached the top floor's barricades and captured one of the Katō brothers. The remaining four radicals burrowed into a pile of futon bedding and refused to surrender. As the police approached them, Kunio Bandō shot one of the policemen, Masahiro Endō, in the eye. Endō lost the eye but survived. Eventually, at 6:15 p.m., 280 hours after the incident began, the remaining four radicals were taken into custody and Muta was rescued. Muta was cold but uninjured and told police that her captors had not mistreated her.
Trains In Japan PART TWO: Seconds From Disaster Runaway Commuter Train HD
The Amagasaki rail crash was a fatal railway derailment which occurred on 25 April 2005 at 09:19 local time, just after the local rush hour.
A seven-car commuter train came off the tracks on the JR West Fukuchiyama Line in Amagasaki, Hyogo prefecture (near Osaka), just before Amagasaki Station on its way to Dōshisha-mae via the JR Tōzai Line and the Gakkentoshi Line.
The front two carriages rammed into an apartment building. The first carriage slid under the first floor parking garage and as a result took days to remove, while the second slammed into the corner of the building, being crushed by the weight of the remaining carriages.
Of the roughly 700 passengers (initial estimate was 580 passengers) on board at the time of the crash, 106 passengers, in addition to the driver, were killed and 562 others injured.
Most passengers and bystanders have said that the train appeared to have been travelling too fast. The incident was Japan's most serious since the 1963 Tsurumi rail accident in which two passenger trains collided with a derailed freight train, killing 162 people.
Investigators have focused on speeding by the 23-year-old driver, Ryūjirō Takami (who was among the dead), as being the most likely cause of the derailment. 25 minutes before the derailment, Takami had run a red light, causing the automatic train stop (ATS) to bring the train to a halt.
The train had also overshot the correct stopping position at an earlier stop at Itami Station, requiring him to back up the train, and resulting in a 90-second delay, about 4 minutes before the disaster.
By the time the train passed Tsukaguchi Station at a speed of 120 km/h, the delay had been reduced to 60 seconds
Investigators speculate that Takami may have been attempting to make up this lost time by increasing the train's speed beyond customary limits. Many reports from surviving passengers indicate that the train was travelling faster than normal. Plus, the driver might have been stressed because he would be punished both for having passed by a red light and for having overshot the platform at Itami Station.
Ten months before the crash, Takami had been reprimanded for overshooting a station platform by 100 meters. In the minutes leading up to the derailment, he might have been thinking of the punishment he would face, and not totally focused on driving.
Immediately after the rail crash occurred, some of the mass media pointed to the congested schedule of the Fukuchiyama Line as an indirect factor. In fact, cumulative changes over the previous three years had reduced the leeway in the train's schedule from 71 to 28 seconds over the 15 minutes between Takarazuka and Amagasaki stations.
Drivers face financial penalties for lateness as well as being forced into harsh and humiliating retraining programs known as nikkin kyōiku (日勤教育, dayshift education), which include weeding and grass-cutting duties during the day.
The final report officially concluded that the retraining system was one probable cause of incident.
This program consisted of violent verbal abuse, forcing the employees to repent by writing extensive reports. Also, during these times, drivers were forced to perform minor tasks, particularly involving cleaning, instead of their normal jobs. Many saw the process of nikkin kyoiku as a punishment and psychological torture, and not as driver retraining.
The driver had also received a non-essential phone call from the general control station at the time he was rounding the bend.
The speed limit on the segment of track where the derailment happened was 70 km/h (43 mph). The data recorder in the rear of the train (the rear cars were new and equipped with many extra devices) later showed that the train was moving at 116 km/h (72 mph) at that point.
Investigators ran a series of simulations and calculated that the train would derail on that curve if going any speed over 106 km/h (66 mph). It is believed that Ryūjirō Takami was so stressed about the inevitability of going back to nikkin kyoiku due to the two infractions from earlier (the red light he had overrun and the platform overshoot) that he did not notice that the train was going too fast. And when the driver did notice it, 4 seconds before the derailment, he used the service brake, instead of the emergency brake, to avoid another infraction, since use of the emergency brake had to be justified
