SATOUMI - Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido
The Shiretoko peninsula, in northeast Hokkaido, is one of the world's richest north temperate ecosystems and one of only four Natural World Heritage sites in Japan. A coastal community with a long history and far-reaching involvement with its natural surroundings, the area demonstrates a uniquely balanced interaction between terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

Drift ice and bird watching cruise in Shiretoko Rausu【SHIRETOKO TV】
Winter heralds the arrival of white-tailed and Steller's sea eagles, which are designated protected species and a bird-watcher's dream. During the drift ice season, around 2000 white-tailed and Steller's sea eagles come, and you have a 90% chance of seeing them. People even come from overseas to take photos! There are even early-morning cruises where you can see the sun rise over Kunashiri and the Northern Territories!
Marumi Co. Ltd.
Whale-watching boat Aruran III is a cruise boat on a route certified by the former Ministry of Transportation.
It was certified during a time when safety regulations were particularly strict, and this is probably the only place where you can go whale watching on such a boat.
It is very carefully maintained to this day!

Shiretoko Peninsula
Abashiri is the largest town on the Okhotsk Coast on the eastern coast of Hokkaido. Originally a small village, but it grew when a prison was established here. Shiretoko National Park is one of Japan's most unspoiled and scenic parks, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site accessible only by boat or on foot.
During the winter, the Sea of Okhotsk is renowned for its dramatic ice drifts.
Our excursion this morning (after another night sailing through fog) was to the rugged coastline of the Shiretoko Peninsula, after a 90 minute drive.
We cruised up the western coast of the peninsular with the ‘promise’ of brown bears, foxes, deer and whales, sea lions and dolphins. We saw a few sea birds and a waterfall.
Two days later, the Diamond Princess took us scenic cruising along the peninsula.
A Trip to Hokkaido – Wildlife – Owls in Rausu See the endangered Blakiston’s fish owl up close
This is Washi-no-yado, a minshuku (traditional Japanese inn run by a family) in Rausu that offers visitors the chance to photograph wild Blakiston’s fish owls. A feeding pond lit up with dusk-like soft-light conditions has been created in a stream within their territory. Visitors can see these owls almost every night.
