Kandariya Mahadev Temple...Khajuraho series (9)
Kandariya Mahadev Temple is the largest, loftiest and the finest among the existing Khajuraho temples.Probably built around 1025-50 by King Vidyahara. From sculpture and architecture point of view, Kandariya is considered to be the best temple among the Khajuraho group of temples.Originally this temple was a panchayatan type temple, but four subsidiary shrines at the four corners of the terrace do not exist now. Kandariya Mahadev shares its high platform with the small Mahadev shrine and the medium - sized Devi jagdambi Temple and has only one entrance to east with high flights of steps. At the entrance the artistic arch (makaratorana) is decorated with figures of deities,Mithunas, musicians, kirtimukhas, makaras etc.The ceiling of the Ardhamandapa and Mandapa are carved richly. The lintels of the sanctum and the doorjambs have rich floral carvings. Inside the sanctum, a square chamber, stands a marble Shivlinga (symbol of Shiva). The inner pradakshina path around the Sanctum is covered with marvellous sculptures. The sculptures are carved around the temple in three bands and include gods, goddesses, beautiful women, musicians and, of course, some of the famed erotic groups. The English archaeologist Cunningham counted 226 statues inside the temple and a further 646 outside - 872 in total with most of them nearly 1m high. The temple is decorated with rich sculpted figures of women in a variety of poses. There are women playing with a ball, some engaged in writing a letter, others applying make-up and absorbed in a multitude of other activities. On the southern and northern sides, between the balconies are the large-scale erotic panels. Below the bands of the main body of the temple are smaller, narrower friezes depicting court life, the army, and processions of elephants and horses. After the Kandariya Mahaddev temple, the artist of khajuraho never again attempted to build a strcuture so high or ornate.

Khajuraho, India: World Famous Sculptures at Lakshman Temple
Mea Culpa: I consistently mispronounced Khajuraho through all the videos. Please take pity on a linguistically challenged person. Thanks...
The UNESCO World Heritage temples were built between the 9th-10th Century by the Chandela rulers who made Khajuraho their peacetime capital. Abandoned in the 13th century, they lay hidden in a dense forest for 700 years until rediscovered in 1883.
Temples are divided into Western, Eastern and Southern groups and is considered one of the seven wonders of India but is primarily known for its erotic art and carvings; although only 10% of the temples have erotic carvings. (I for one had a difficult time trying to decide who was doing what to whom.)
We began with the Western Group at Lakshman or Lakshmana Temple, one of the most beautiful and exquisitely carved at Khajuraho.
TEMPLE OF ROMANCE-- KHAJURAHO [INDIA]
TEMPLE OF ROMANCE-- KHAJURAHO
Khajuraho is a town in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, located in Chhatarpur District, about 620 kilometres (385 mi) southeast of New Delhi, the capital city of India. According to the 2001 India census,[1] Khajuraho has a population of 19,282. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. The town has an average literacy rate of 53%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 62%, and female literacy is 43%. In Khajuraho, 19% of the population is under 6 years of age. Khajuraho is located at 24.85°N 79.93°E[2] and has an average elevation of 283 metres (928 feet).
Khajuraho is served by Khajuraho Airport and there is a railway station in the centre of the town.
These abunduntly found erotic sculptures were crafted by chandella's artisan. Locals living in the Khajuraho village always knew about and kept up the temples as best as they could. They were pointed out to the English in the late 19th century when the jungles had taken a toll on the monuments.
Some Bargujar Rajputs moved eastward to central India; they ruled over the Northeastern region of Rajasthan, called Dhundhar, and were referred to as Dhundhel or Dhundhela in ancient times, for the region they governed. Later on they called themselves Chandelas; those who were in the ruling class having gotra Kashyap were definitely all Bargujars; they were vassals of Gurjara - Pratihara empire of North India, which lasted from 500 C.E. to 1300 C.E. and at its peak the major monuments were built. The Bargujars also built the Kalinjar fort and Neelkanth Mahadev temple, similar to one at Sariska National Park, and Baroli, being Shiva
The city was the cultural capital of Chandel Rajputs, a Hindu dynasty that ruled this part of India from the 10-12th centuries. The political capital of the Chandelas was Kalinjar. The Khajuraho temples were built over a span of 200 years, from 950 to 1150. The Chandela capital was moved to Mahoba after this time, but Khajuraho continued to flourish for some time. Khajuraho has no forts because the Chandel Kings never lived in their cultural capital.
The whole area was enclosed by a wall with eight originates, each flanked by two golden palm trees. There were originally over 80 Hindu temples, of which only 25 now stand in a reasonable state of preservation, scattered over an area of about 20 square kilometres (8 sq mi). Today, the temples serve as fine examples of Indian architectural styles that have gained popularity due to their explicit depiction of sexual life during medieval times.

Erotic Sex Temples of Khajuraho, India
Oh, Khajuraho, the stunning Hindu and Jain temples in central India, famous for their sophisticated sandstone construction; bold artistic statements; and intricate carvings depicting group sex, 69s, and two men getting it on with a horse.
But we're getting ahead of ourselves.
The Khajuraho monuments are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, considered to be one of the seven wonders of India.
These glorious temples were built between 950 and 1050 AD in the Madhya Pradesh state about 400 miles southeast of New Delhi.
The construction of these sandstone temples is something of a miracle. Built without mortar, they use only mortise and tenon joints and are held in place by gravity. Some of the stones weigh up to 20 tons.
There are about two dozen temples in all. A few of are dedicated to the Jain pantheon of gods, and the rest to Hindu deities - God's trio of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, as well various forms of Goddesses.
You'll see depictions of all these gods inside the temples.
The exterior of the temples are decorated with an amazing profusion of sculptures depicting everyday life, from ladies applying makeup, to musicians, potters, farmers, warriors, and more.
And then there's the erotic artwork. These make up just 10% of the carvings, but probably 90% of the temple's notoriety.
It's important to note that the erotic carvings are located on the exterior of the temples only.
Some people suggest the carvings depict tantric sexual practices - an instruction booklet of sorts. Others just think they're perverted.
But many people see the artwork and the temples as a metaphor for mankind - filled with worldly desires on the outside, and a pure reflection of God's love on the inside.
No matter what your interpretation, it's clear that these scenes are among the greatest masterpieces of Indian art, making Khajuraho an essential place to visit on a trip to India.

An overall examination of site suggests that the Hindu symbolic mandala design principle of square and circles is present each temple plan and design.[30] Further, the territory is laid out in three triangles that converge to form a pentagon. Scholars suggest that this reflects the Hindu symbolism for three realms or trilokinatha, and five cosmic substances or panchbhuteshvara.[25] The temple site highlights Shiva, the one who destroys and recycles life, thereby controlling the cosmic dance of time, evolution and dissolution.[26]
The temples have a rich display of intricately carved statues. While they are famous for their erotic sculpture, sexual themes cover less than 10% of the temple sculpture.[31] Further, most erotic scene panels are neither prominent nor emphasized at the expense of the rest, rather they are in proportional balance with the non-sexual images.[32] The viewer has to look closely to find them, or be directed by a guide.[33] The arts cover numerous aspects of human life and values considered important in Hindu pantheon. Further, the images are arranged in a configuration to express central ideas of Hinduism. All three ideas from Agamas are richly expressed in Khajuraho temples - Avyakta, Vyaktavyakta and Vyakta.[
The Beejamandal temple is under excavation. It has been identified with the Vaidyanath temple mentioned in the Grahpati Kokalla inscription.[citation needed]
Of all temples, the Matangeshvara temple remains an active site of worship.[26] It is another square grid temple, with a large 2.5 metres (8.2 ft) high and 1.1 metres (3.6 ft) diameter lingam, placed on a 7.6 metres (25 ft) diameter platform.
The most visited temple, Kandariya Mahadev, has an area of about 6,500 square feet and a shikhara (spire) that rises 116 feet
