Shofuku-ji Temple, Fukuoka ● 聖福寺
► Shofuku-ji Temple is located in Gion-area of Hakata, Fukuoka.
(Only one stop by Kuko Subway Line from Hakata Station.)
It was founded in 1195, making it the oldest Zen Temple in Japan.
The center of the mainbulding houses 3 golden buddha statues, each approx. 3½
meters tall.
The place is well worth a visit if in Fukuoka; It's not overrun by tourists, and the templeground itself is most pleasent, with small ponds and trees, making it a small oasis in the middle of Fukuoka.
FUKUOKA - Shofoku-ji Temple
Shofuku-ji is a Rinzai temple and its construction was completed in 1195, making it the oldest Zen temple in Japan.
Shofukuji Temple, Fukuoka ☆ Japan's 1st Zen Temple 福岡市聖福寺 ☆ Japan As It Truly Is
This temple was completed in 1195 and founded by Myōan Eisai, who introduced Zen to Japan from China (as well as green tea). This makes it the oldest zen temple in Japan. While you cannot enter the buildings themselves, the architecture is quite striking and the large space is often empty and peaceful. It is just a 3 minute walk north of the Gion Subway Station, and if it's hard to find it's because there are a dozen other temples right in the same area.
Seeing Shofuji with the nearby Great Buddha at Tochoji makes a great combination.

Shofukuji (聖福寺, Shōfukuji) has the distinction of being the first Zen temple constructed in Japan. It was founded in 1195 by the priest Eisai, who introduced the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism from China into Japan. Although the temple buildings cannot be entered, visitors can walk through Shofukuji's attractive temple grounds and observe the buildings from outside.
Before Zen's introduction to Japan, Buddhism has already had a long history in Japan dating back to the 500s. The new teachings of Zen, which Eisai amassed during his travels in China, promoted meditation and discipline as the means to enlightenment and became very popular with the samurai class, which was exerting political power through the shogunate government based in Kamakura.
The temple grounds of Shofukuji have many of the features of a typical Zen temple, and its wooden buildings have been destroyed and rebuilt many times throughout the centuries. There are a number of gates on the temple grounds, the most prominent of which is the Sanmon Gate. The large gate stands in front of a small pond and bridge and was most recently rebuilt in 1911.
Behind the Sanmon Gate a tree lined path leads to the Butsuden Hall, which holds a small wooden statue of the historical Buddha flanked by giant golden statues of other Buddhas on either side. The building's ceiling is decorated by a painting of a cloud dragon. Shofukuji has a number of other interesting buildings, such as a belfry and a hall dedicated to Eisai. More Buddhist architecture can be seen at a few smaller temples in the surrounding neighborhood.
How to get there
Shofukuji Temple can be reached in a short walk from Gion Station, one station from Hakata Station by subway (100 yen one way). Alternatively, from Hakata Station it is a 15-20 minute walk to the temple.

Japan's Great Buddha ☆ Tochoji Temple Daibutsu, Fukuoka ☆ 福岡の東長寺大仏 ☆ Japan As It Truly Is
Tochoji has Japan's mammoth wooden Giant Buddha! This Daibutsu is 10.8m tall, weighs 30 tons, took 4 years to carve and was completed in 1992. Tōchōji is in the Gion area of Fukuoka City and is the oldest Buddhist Shingon temple in Kyushu. And seeing the Great Buddha (大仏, Daibutsu) is just 50 yen!
The temple was founded by Kukai in 806 AD.
This Tochoji Great Buddha is also a must-see, although the Todaiji in Nara and Kotokuin in Kamakura are much more famous.
Even so, this temple is mostly unknown to the tourist guide books, self-proclaimed experts, and even many of the Japanese nearby. It is never crowded with tourists, and easily accessible from the Fukuoka City Gion subway stop (Exit #1). Aside from the Great Buddha, you can see an expansive prayer area, pagoda, and small historical graveyard that has Kuroda 3 lords who ruled the area.
Be sure to go through the pitch black tunnel in the back and try and find your way out.
Open 9 AM - 4:45 PM.
There is a 50 yen charge to see the Buddha.

Gokusho machi to start a Shofuku ji Tenple and Johten ji Temple, a number of large and small temple there.
Can come on foot from Hakata Station, it is the historical district, the old city remains.
I did not put most such as the main hall and gardens, the main compartment, but it is the place to enjoy the atmosphere.
In particular, Tochoji Temple in many things, it is worth a look hell tour of Buddha and Buddha under.
It is ideal for sightseeing nearby, because in front of the Gion Subway Station, the nearest station from Hakata Station.

Tochoji Temple (東長寺), Fukuoka City
Tochoji Temple (東長寺) is located in the Fukuoka city of Hakata ward in the Kyushu region. Tochoji temple is a city temple, as you can see by the residential buildings located around it.
Tochoji Temple was founded by Monk Kobo Daishi Kukai (founder of Shingon sect of Buddhism) in 806 AD after his return from China. Monk Kukai went to China to study Buddhism from the Chinese Buddhist Scholars.
This temple has a large Buddha hall on the first floor, which houses the largest wooden statue of seated Buddha in Japan, known as the Great Buddha of Fukuoka. Unfortunately I am not allowed to video tape it, so there is no footage of it in this video.

Fukuoka, Japan: Exploring Temples and the Pokemon Center!
Hi, everyone! I wanted to share my time in Fukuoka, Japan with you. I was there for a week to train for Interac, but had one free day to explore so I spent it checking out the local temples in the Hakata area. Then, right before hopping on the bullet train back to Okayama, I got to check out the Pokemon Center! We don't have one in Okayama so I wanted to get something for Joe. Especially because while I was away training, he had his birthday, and we had our 4 year wedding anniversary.

Kiyomizu-dera in Autumn - Miyama, Fukuoka - Japan As It Truly Is - 清水寺 - 福岡県みやま市
A look at Kiyomizu-dera at the height of autumn, one of the best times to see it. Of all the seasons, you can see the best colors in autumn, and many people come here for a quiet escape. To clarify, NO this is not the famous Kiyomizudera in Kyoto with the daily stampede of tourists rushing through. There are actually several Kiyomizudera in Japan (same spelling and Chinese characters) but this one is far, far off the beaten trail where few tourists ever go, and unknown to the tourist books or guides.
It lies in Miyama City, Fukuoka, about 10km east of Yanagawa.
What makes this place so special is especially in autumn the colors explode in countless shades of red, gold and orange, and not even many Japanese know about it.
If you want a peaceful retreat from the chores and stress of life you could rarely do better than this beautiful and natural gem.
If you want to see the Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto, you can see it here:

Sofukuji Temple, Nagasaki - 崇福寺●長崎市 - Japan As It Truly Is
Sofukuji temple is often overlooked in the stampede for Peace Park and Glover Garden, but really shouldn't be. It looks a bit weathered because it is - a 1629 Ming Dynasty Zen temple and one of the finest examples of architecture from its period - even in China there are few surviving places that surpass it. Its existence testifies to the presence and influence of the Chinese residents in Nagasaki. It's closest to the Shokaku-ji or Shianbashi streetcar stops.
