June 22 -- Landed at Narita airport around 1:40 p.m. Went PAU immigration/customs around 2:20 p.m. Then went to change my JR railpass voucher for the railpass. Pau about 2:45 p.m. Caught the 3:15 p.m. NEX express train to Tokyo station. Got there roughly 4:15 p.m. Went up to my shinkansen platform and the place was roped off. All the kiosks were shut down. Da nerve! I wanted to buy some liquid refreshments to quench my thirst. Anyways, I went ask this brudda holding da ropes, eh, you speak English? He said sukosh. So I said what’s going on? He said TENNO HEIKA coming and told me move a couple ways to da left for a better view. Nice guy. Wow, the TENNO HEIKA group had one whole shinkansen to themselves. They stepped out and I was bitching because the professional cameramen and TV stations blocked my view (those buggahs!). Well, the royal couple went left and I got one really clear shot of them. Everyone was in awe! I went give them my warmest Aloha wave (not da shaka) and they waved back – I’d like to think they waved back at me. This young lady next to me said “subarashii ne?”. I said yep! Wow, what a chicken skin, tear jerking moment!
All da kiosks opened up after the royal couple left and I got my liquid refreshment, boarded my bullet train and headed north of Tokyo. I got off at Yonezawa station, which is in Yamagata prefecture. Yamagata is famous for the Uesugi clan which plays a part in the 2016 on-going NHK Taiga Drama “Sanada Maru”. Also famous is the highly marbled Yonezawa beef.
Checked into the Best Western The Japonais Yonezawa hotel. It is on the quiet side of the train tracks. The main part of town is on the other side – gotta go to the train station, walk up da stairs, cross over da tracks and down the other side. I dumped my junks, walked across da tracks, looked at coupla eating places, walked into the NARU. Nice place, no English menu, and the folks don’t speak English. I asked for chicken – no dice. So I pointed to some pictures and he said that’s pork and the other was Yonezawa beef. Got one of each with a bowl of rice. Pickled veggies was free. The Yonezawa beef is so highly marbled with fat that even if you burn it, it is soft and ONO!
June 23 – 6:45 a.m. breakfast at the Best Western. Not bad stuffs. ONO. Weather not so good. Small rain. Went BURA-BURA for little bit but didn’t see much. Gave up for this morning. Went to the train station and jumped on the shinkansen to Yamagata which is the main city of Yamagata prefecture. They were selling fresh cherries all over the city. Looked ONO but I didn’t buy any although I was thinking about it. Went BURA-BURA a little bit but it was drizzling a little bit here too. Had lunch at a restaurant in the train station. I had the unagi set – was pretty good. Rain stopped so I went BURA-BURA some more but I felt kinda lazy so I jumped back on the shinkansen and went back to Yonezawa to relax. Walked back over the train tracks to the other side of town and after looking at several places ended up in this Miyoshi restaurant. No English menu and no English spoken. Had a hard time so I picked an easy picture. It was a Yonezawa beef plate. Geez, eating meat 2 dinners in a row.

2014.10.23 赤林山、毒ヶ森、南昌山の周回コースを歩く
ステッキ納めに赤林周回コースを歩いてみました。結構きついルートでギブアップ寸前で戻りました。南昌山五合目、峠登山口からのインパクトが圧巻でした。
The Autumn Peak (Akinomine)
Fully committed yamabushi gather annually for a seven-day retreat known as akinomine, which literally means autumn peak. They participate in order to discipline themselves and gain as much power from the mountains as they possibly can. This traditional period of practice is not to be undertaken lightly or without a complete willingness to follow the prescribed rules.
Supervised by master yamabushi, participants follow a daily schedule that includes running through the mountains, observing traditional rituals and abstaining from solid food. Participants are not allowed to have cameras, wallets or watches. They wear only essential clothing. Throughout the retreat, they are not allowed to brush their teeth, shave, or bathe.
Participants are enclosed daily in a lodge with rain shutters pulled shut. Charcoal fires are lit inside and powdered hot pepper is sprinkled on the fires, creating a choking smoke.
