Treasures of Hermitage St. Petersburg Russia
The Hermitage is one of the oldest and largest Museums in the world it was foundet in 1764 by Catherine the Great.
State Hermitage Museum - Winter Palace - Saint Petersburg, Russia
The State Hermitage (Russian: ??????´????????? ??????´?; IPA: [g?s?'darstv??n?j ?rm??'ta?], Gosudarstvenny Ermitazh) is a museum of art and culture in Saint Petersburg, Russia. One of the largest[2][3] and oldest museums in the world, it was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and has been open to the public since 1852. Its collections, of which only a small part is on permanent display, comprise over three million items,[4] including the largest collection of paintings in the world. The collections occupy a large complex of six historic buildings along Palace Embankment, including the Winter Palace, a former residence of Russian emperors. Apart from them, the Menshikov Palace, Museum of Porcelain, Storage Facility at Staraya Derevnya and the eastern wing of the General Staff Building are also part of the museum. The museum has several exhibition centers abroad. The Hermitage is a federal state property. Since 1990, the director of the museum has been Mikhail Piotrovsky.
Of six buildings of the main museum complex, five, named the Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage and Hermitage Theatre, are open to the public. The entrance ticket for foreign tourists costs more than the fee paid by citizens of Russia and Belarus. However, entrance is free of charge the first Thursday of every month for all visitors, and free daily for students and children. The museum is closed on Mondays. The entrance for individual visitors is located in the Winter Palace, accessible from the Courtyard.
Originally, the only building housing the collection was the 'Small Hermitage'. Today, the Hermitage Museum encompasses many buildings on the Palace Embankment and its neighbourhoods. Apart from the Small Hermitage, the museum now also includes the 'Old Hermitage' (also called 'Large Hermitage'), the 'New Hermitage', the 'Hermitage Theatre', and the 'Winter Palace', the former main residence of the Russian tsars. In recent years, the Hermitage has expanded to the General Staff Building on the Palace Square in front of the Winter Palace, and the Menshikov Palace.

St Petersburg Russia - Winter Palace - Hermitage Museum - Church of Savior on the Spilled Blood
It was a two day stop in St Petersburg Russia during a Northern Europe cruise aboard the Holland America ship Nieuw Statendam that would included many of the most famous monuments of the city. This would be the highlight of our 25 day trip that included 3 days in Amsterdam, and then 21 days cruising on Holland America's newest ship.
When visiting Saint Petersburg via a cruise ship, you basically have three options to visit the city. Option one is to take one of the excursions your ship offers which should include the visa required to visit Russia. This will be the most expensive option, but it will be the easiest. Another advantage to use your cruise ship is that many of the cruise lines pay extra for early entrance to the Hermitage and Catherine Palace. By chance we were in the first group of Holland America tours to get in the Hermitage. Getting in before the crowds build up allowed us to see more and have a less crowed enjoyable experience.
One disadvantage to taking the ships tour, was that we were kept away from local vendors, and in fact were sold to a rest stop/tourist items store. You weren't required to purchase anything, and the rest rooms were free, BUT the only people in this store were the people on the ship's tour. Not really the way to get the best price on local merchandise. Even though the official policy is that everything is to be paid for in Rubles, the local street vendors accepted Euros knowing that this was the only cash currency the ship's visitors had. If you had some Euros in your pocket and were ready to make a quick deal, you purchase from the local vendors. ( Note: there was no official policy by the ship preventing purchase from the local vendors, but we weren't allowed ANY TIME to look around on our own at any stop ) Leaving one stop, I was able to purchase three genuine Faberge eggs from a street seller for just 5 Euros. Of course they weren't real, but they were priced right at 5 Euros for the three.
The second option is to book tours of St. Petersburg through local tour operators, who also include the visa required to visit the city in the price of their packages. Doing these tours can cut your excursion prices by as much as 50%. The one possible disadvantage to doing a local tour, is that if your tour operator is late getting you back to the ship, it may sail without you. Tours booked through the cruise line won't leave without you if the tour is late getting back.
As this was a two day stop over, getting back later than the scheduled time on the first day is no problem. We did take the ship's tour and we along with 500 or so other passengers were late getting back the second day. Or course the ship waited for us. Interestingly the trip through customs/border control was much, much faster on the second day getting back on the ship, when the ship was already late leaving port.
The third option for visiting Saint Petersburg would involve you individually getting the visa from the Russian government and then doing the city on your own. Getting the visa can be take a couple months and isn't a straight forward process.

St Petersburg Russia Part 2 Pushkin Shop and Going to Catherine Palace
After the first two stops for photos, we stopped for about 15 minutes at a gift shop. There was no compulsion to buy anything, which was good. The purpose of the gift shop stop was also to use their toilets, which were clean. We bought some fridge magnets. Then, we set off to Catherine Palace. The ride would take about 45 minutes. On the way, I saw a Mahan Air plane plane landing. We must be near the St Petersburg Airport.
We were dropped off about 400M from the gate and had to take a leisurely walk to the gate where groups entered. There were many people waiting. Apparently there was a long line for the group leaders to get tickets, so we just waited a bit. This was the group entrance, not the individual entrance.

ST. PETERSBURG|RUSSIA|THE HERMITAGE STATE MUSEUM!THE WINTER PALACE
#Thehermitage is also known as the winter palace is visited by thousand of tourisits why? lets see the meuseum through my eyes
The State Hermitage Museum (Russian: Госуда́рственный Эрмита́ж, tr. Gosudárstvennyj Ermitáž, IPA: [ɡəsʊˈdarstvʲɪnɨj ɪrmʲɪˈtaʂ]) is a museum of art and culture in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The second-largest art museum in the world,[2][3] it was founded in 1764 when Empress Catherine the Great acquired an impressive collection of paintings from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. The museum celebrates the anniversary of its founding each year on 7 December, Saint Catherine's Day.[4] It has been open to the public since 1852.
Its collections, of which only a small part is on permanent display, comprise over three million items (the numismatic collection accounts for about one-third of them),[5] including the largest collection of paintings in the world.[citation needed] The collections occupy a large complex of six historic buildings along Palace Embankment, including the Winter Palace, a former residence of Russian emperors. Apart from them, the Menshikov Palace, Museum of Porcelain, Storage Facility at Staraya Derevnya, and the eastern wing of the General Staff Building are also part of the museum. The museum has several exhibition centers abroad. The Hermitage is a federal state property. Since July 1992, the director of the museum has been Mikhail Piotrovsky.[6]
Of the six buildings in the main museum complex, five—namely the Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage, and Hermitage Theatre—are open to the public. The entrance ticket for foreign tourists costs more than the fee paid by citizens of Russia and Belarus. However, entrance is free of charge the third Thursday of every month for all visitors, and free daily for students and children. The museum is closed on Mondays. The entrance for individual visitors is located in the Winter Palace, accessible from the Courtyard
.A hermitage is the dwelling of a hermit or recluse. The word derives from Old French hermit, ermit hermit, recluse, from Late Latin eremita, from Greek eremites, literally people who live alone, which is in turn derived from ἐρημός (erēmos), desert. The building was initially given this name because of its exclusivity - in its early days, only very few people were allowed to visit.
Catherine the Great started her art collection in 1764 by purchasing paintings from Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. He assembled the collection for Frederick II of Prussia, who ultimately refused to purchase it. Thus, Gotzkowsky provided 225 or 317 paintings (conflicting accounts list both numbers), mainly Flemish and Dutch, as well as others, including 90 not precisely identified, to the Russian crown.[8] The collection consisted of Rembrandt (13 paintings), Rubens (11 paintings), Jacob Jordaens (7 paintings), Anthony van Dyck (5 paintings), Paolo Veronese (5 paintings), Frans Hals (3 paintings, including Portrait of a Young Man with a Glove), Raphael (2 paintings), Holbein (2 paintings), Titian (1 painting), Jan Steen (The Idlers), Hendrik Goltzius, Dirck van Baburen, Hendrick van Balen and Gerrit van Honthorst.[9] Perhaps some of the most famous and notable artworks that were a part of Catherine's original purchase from Gotzkowsky were Danae, painted by Rembrandt in 1636; Descent from the Cross, painted by Rembrandt in 1624; and Portrait of a Young Man Holding a Glove, painted by Frans Hals in 1650. These paintings remain in the Hermitage collection today.[10]
In 1764, Catherine commissioned Yury Felten to build an extension on the east of the Winter Palace which he completed in 1766. Later it became the Southern Pavilion of the Small Hermitage. In 1767–1769, French architect Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe built the Northern Pavilion on the Neva embankment. Between 1767 and 1775, the extensions were connected by galleries, where Catherine put her collections.[11] The entire neoclassical building is now known as the Small Hermitage. During the time of Catherine, the Hermitage was not a public museum and few people were allowed to view its holdings. Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe also rebuilt rooms in the second story of the south-east corner block that was originally built for Elizabeth and later occupied by Peter III. The largest room in this particular apartment was the Audience Chamber (also called the Throne Hall) which consisted of 227 square meters.[10]
