Ka'anapali Beach, Maui, Hawaii
Previously named ‘America’s Best Beach’ in 2003, Ka’anapali Beach is one of the most popular, and well-deserved, choices among Maui’s 81 distinct beaches:
Located in west Maui only a short drive from Olowalu, Lahaina Town and Napili, Ka’anapali Beach is one of the best options for those seeking golden-white sand, turquoise waters, sunshine, Hawaiian Sea Turtle sightings, gorgeous sunsets, walking trails, snorkeling, sunbathing, swimming, cliff jumping and even scuba diving. In addition, Ka’anapali Beach is also a convenient beach location near plenty of restaurants, bars, shops, spas, condos and resorts, and has plentiful options for public restrooms.
Stretching along 3 miles of coastline, this often-visited Maui beach - also known as ‘Black Rock’ for its prime cliff jumping spot on the northern end - Ka’anapali Beach is one of the top local spots for beach-going, and features a nightly cliff diving ceremony at sunset that acts as a prime photo opportunity for guests and locals alike.
Bring along your snorkel gear, or rent it from one of the many nearby activity and accommodation providers, and explore Maui’s most unique marine life, from endemic species like the humuhumunukunukuapua’a, the state fish of Hawaii, to other species like octopus, eagle rays, sea stars, sea cucumbers and sea turtles. It’s recommended to arrive early, as parking normally fills up later in the afternoon, and only to go out on days when the water is calm and you have someone to swim with, as dangerous strong currents can pop up from time to time.
Resorts like the Honua Kai, Hyatt Regency, Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, Ka’anapali Beach Hotel, Aston at the Whaler and Westin Maui Resort & Spa are located just nearby for ultimate convenience to those staying in the area, but we also recommend bringing cash or a card in case you want to have lunch or enjoy a post-swim pau hana cocktail at one of the many nearby bars and restaurants, including popular options like Leilani’s on the Beach, Hula Grill, Tiki Bar & Grill, Duke’s Beach House or Monkeypod Kitchen.
We’ll see you on the beach!

Maui Hawaii Road Trip
We went on a five day road trip along the coast of Maui. Maui is a fantastic environment in that each side has a different habitat. For each of our five days, we embarked on an adventure to a new location. Each day, the habitat and animals we saw were new and unique to the days before. It is an amazing experience that we encountered many different aspects on one island.
The island is formed by the volcano, so the beaches were covered with black rocks, which are molten lava cooled down.
The atmosphere and attitude in Maui Hawaii are very relaxing. It is a escape from the busy lives of the cities. In Maui Hawaii, when I step out of my room, everything I see and do takes my mind off of work.
We concluded our trip watching the sunset on top of Haleakala, Maui's most famous volcano. The view was above the clouds, and felt like we were standing above the sky.
Our Journey:
Road to Hana - Hana - Wailea - Lahaina - Haleakala
Thanks for watching!
Fun Facts of Maui:

• Maui has more accessible beaches than the other Hawaiian islands.
• The scenic Road to Hana drive is 45 miles long, has 54 one-lane bridges and 600 hairpin turns
• Maui is about a half an hour by air from Honolulu.

Honolua Bay and Molokini are two spectacular places to snorkel on Maui
Each of Hawaii's 400-plus species of fish has its own unique role in the nearshore environment and seeks out a different habitat. Some fish are at home in sandy bottom areas, others in boulder-strewn waters off rocky shorelines. Tidepools provide “nursery” areas for young fish of many species. A healthy reef provides fish with abundant food resources and protection from predators.
Warm waters surrounding Maui are home to protected marine reserves like Molokini and Honolua Bay. These reserves have crystal clear waters and beautiful coral formations teeming with tropical fish. Molokini is the best known and most popular for snorkeling of the Marine Life Conservation Districts (MLCDs) in Hawaii. Both Molokini and Honolua exemplify the reasons why these MLCDs are so valuable and important for Hawaii’s ecosystem and tourism.
Only a tiny island about 3 miles off the southwest coast of Maui, Molokini is an ancient volcano that rises out of the sea in the Alalakeiki Channel between the islands of Maui and Kahoolawe. The northern rim has eroded away allowing the sea to flood the crater, forming its unique crescent shape. The island is a state bird sanctuary and the inside of the crater is an MLCD. Water visibility on a typical day exceeds 100 feet and it’s not unheard of to have visibility exceed 200 feet.
The old volcano walls protect the inner crater from ocean swells making it a safe spot to snorkel with the whole family. Shallow water next to the shoreline allows sunlight to reach the bottom, growing lots of coral for fish to make their homes. The outside southern rim of the crater is famous for being one of the best wall dives anywhere on the planet. The back wall is an underwater 350-foot vertical drop.
Molokini has an encyclopedia of marine life. Some of the marine life you can expect to see in Molokini’s MLCD include: butterfly fish, parrot fish, damsel fish, surgeon fish, moorish idol, tang, wrasse, squirrel fish, soldier fish, perch, chub, trigger fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa, goat fish, snapper, hawk fish, jacks, emperor fish, big eye scad, cornet fish, and needle fish. You also are likely to see eels, crustaceans, invertebrates, and reef sharks and sometimes even whale sharks, manta rays, and Hawaiian monk seals.
Honolua means “twin bays” in Hawaiian and refers to the neighboring bays of Honolua and Mokuleia. Honolua Bay is part of the 45-acre Honolua-Mokuleia Marine Conservation District located roughly 10 miles north of Lahaina. The Bay and surrounding area have a rich history that goes back to the reign of Pi’ilani who ordered that a footpath be built to connect the six bays of West Maui in his domain. This path was known as Honoapi’ilani, meaning “the bays of Pi’ilani”.
In modern times, Honolua Ranch, that became Honolua Plantation, grew taro, coffee, mango and aloe, raised cattle, merged with a pineapple company and formed the Maui Land and Pineapple Company. The Company dedicated several thousand acres of land to conservation before Honolua Bay was declared a MLCD in 1978. Locals protesting the threat of development in Honolua Bay led to the state’s purchase of what become the MLCD. Honolua Bay also is an historically rich spot. In 1976 the voyaging canoe, Hokulea, was launched on its historic sail to French Polynesia that helped to boost interest in ancient Hawaiian culture.
The coral in Honolua Bay is home to many of the reef fish: butterfly fish, parrot fish, damsel fish, surgeon fish, moorish idol, tang, wrasse, box fish, flag tails, cardinal fish, squirrel fish, soldier fish, big eyes, chub, trigger fish, Humuhumunukunukuapuaa, goat fish, snapper, peacock bass, hawk fish, jacks, mullet, and even large schools of big eye scad.

Honokohau Falls | Kukui | Maui | Hawaii | plunges in two tiers for a total of 1100ft
Honokohau Falls is said to be the tallest waterfall on Maui as it apparently plunges in two tiers for a total of 1100ft.
In order for us to get to this waterfall, we had to take a helicopter tour since the falls was situated in an inaccessible valley in West Maui. This was our first ever helicopter ride (as we did this way back in September 2003) so we didn't really know what to expect. Basically, the lure of seeing the tallest waterfall on the island was enough to get us to do this.
Now with that being said, we almost weren't able to visit this waterfall even though we were going on a helicopter tour. We actually had to do a little bit of negotiating in order to even get to this waterfall on our chopper ride.
It turned out that as we were walking around in Lahaina, numerous tour vendors were trying to solicit our business, and one managed to get our attention with this Jurassic Park waterfall pitch. Apparently, the saleslady said that was Honokohau Falls (though I haven't really watched the Jurassic Park movies so I can't really say whether this waterfall was in it or not). However, later on in the conversation, she then tried to convince us that this waterfall and the Wall of Tears (supposedly a bunch of waterfalls tumbling down the mountain in one spot at a time) were the same thing.
Anyways to make a long story short, we looked past the obvious lies and went with this vendor (which was Air Maui) because they offered a pretty decent price (I don't recall exactly how much we paid though). But I knew whatever the saleslady promised wasn't going to be communicated to the pilot. So when we were in the helicopter, the way we communicated with the pilot was to write something on a notepad and hand it to him. That was when I asked about Honokohau Falls, and the pilot (grudgingly) complied. And it was a good thing he did because the Wall of Tears was a dud.
Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park located in the Kona District on the Big island of Hawaiʻi in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi. It includes the National Historic Landmarked archaeological site known as the Honokōhau Settlement. The park was established on November 10, 1978, for the preservation, protection and interpretation of traditional native Hawaiian activities and culture.
Honokōhau means bay drawing dew and refers to the ancient settlement on the south part of the park. This area can be reached via trails from the park visitor's center, or from the small boat harbor access road on Kealakehe Parkway.[9] Features include loko iʻa (Ancient Hawaiian aquaculture fishponds), kahua (house site platforms), kiʻi pōhaku (petroglyphs), hōlua (stone slides) and heiau (religious sites). The ʻAiʻopio Fishtrap is a 1.7-acre (0.69 ha) pond, with a stone wall forming an artificial enclosure along the naturally curved shoreline of a bay. Small openings allowed young fish to enter from the sea, but as they grew larger (or at low tide) they were easily caught with nets inside the trap as needed. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 as site 66000287.[citation needed]
Recreation[edit]
Several restored trails include about one mile of the Māmalahoa Trail.[10] It was built in the mid-19th century, and evolved over the years into the Hawaii Belt Road which encircles the entire island. The coastal trail is part of the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. The Honokōhau boat harbor provides a launching area for traditional canoes, fishing boats, Scuba diving and snorkeling tours of the area.

After returning from our trip to North end of Kauai, we took the trail from the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort to Anini Beach.
It's a pretty good walk, very muddy after & prone to some wash out after a good rain. The beach is really neat l, with all the trees reaching out toward the water's edge. Has lots of shallows & is really good for snorkeling.
