SV Interior with Bill Symon sitting at desk and talking to Scottish Cinema owner Sir Alexander King. CU Bill Symon asking question Sir Alexander, what are the main reasons why the tax must go? SV Sir Alexander replying Because if the tax is not abolished the whole British Cinematographic Industry will collapse. And remember this tax was introduced as a temporary war time measure in 1916, a temporary measure lasting 42 years, surely that's a record in Treasury tenacity. The choice confronting the Chancellor is simple, he either abolishes the entertainment tax or abolishes the cinematograph industry. Therefore, with anxious hearts and vanishing bank balances we sincerely hope that Mr. Heathcoat Amory will grasp his opportunity in his first budget.
Bill Symon visits the Ritz Cinema, Yiewsley, West Drayton which was saved from closing by local residents. He talks to people who campaigned to save the cinema.
Various shots of people working at Elstree Film Studios, Hertfordshire. Ronald Shiner is seen on the set as is film star Richard Todd. Todd is questioned by Bill Symon about the Cinema Tax. He also talks about the challenge of television. Good shots of the woodworking / carpentry workshop at Elstree. Shots of men painting scenery.
CU Bill Symon asking How would the abolition affect production? CU Anna Neagle answering Production of British films hold their own and could be doubled. Studios which have been sold and are now warehouses and garages could be re-opened. New talent fostered, full employment again for our technicians and the British public could enjoy greater proportion of our own British films. All this must inevitably happen if the entertainments tax is abolished.
VS of row of houses with television aerials. Crowds into football ground. Crowds going to boxing match. Shots of boxing. People at greyhound racing (all pay no entertainment tax)
VS of children queuing to go into cinema. Children pay and are seen watching a film.
Ext. of Film Premiere in London. Jack Hawkins, Gary Cooper, Richard Todd, Tommy Steele, Sophia Loren, Yvonne Mitchell, Jayne Mansfield and Kenneth More are among those seen.
CU Jack Hawkins speaking I always think that the cinema is our cinema, something which belongs to all. We like it or we shouldn't be here. Long may the cinema flourish. We must not let it be taxed out of existence.

Grand Marriage Proposal at Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor
Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor holds a special place in the Glasgow West End community. As a celebration destination for 80 years, there have been many weddings and proposals held at the hotel. After hearing so many stories from guests who feel that their cherished moments are a part of the hotel’s history, Nitin Ramtri, general manager, Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor, was eager to create a lasting memory of his own before transferring to a new role at London Hilton on Park Lane.
Ramtri chose to host his marriage proposal over the Christmas season in The Terrace, the newly refurbished lounge overlooking the Glasgow Botanic Gardens. This romantic setting was an easy choice, not only is it a sophisticated, beautifully decorated venue, choosing The Terrace allowed Ramtri to share this moment with his hotel team.
“I met my fiancé, Caroline Shaw, over 4 years ago in Aberdeen, where we both worked for Hilton hotels. Working for Hilton feels like working with family and it was important for me to share this moment with the Hilton team that we both cherish,” said Ramtri. “Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor holds such a special place in my heart and now we’ll always have a reason to come back and visit.”
The proposal event was crafted by the hotel team, who even arranged for a videographer to capture the moment. Having invited his fiancé and her closest family and friends to a special festive dinner, Ramtri excused himself from the table. Moments later, a hotel trolley carrying a very large gift, was wheeled through The Terrace following a young singer performing Over the Rainbow, Shaw’s favourite song. After being invited to open her early Christmas present, Shaw was overwhelmingly surprised to find Ramtri inside, ready to request her hand in marriage, to which she gladly said, “Yes!”
2018 marks the 80th year that memorable hospitality has been delivered at this historic listed building in the heart of Glasgow’s West End. Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor is seeking stories and photos from guests who have created their own special moments at the hotel as they work on creating a new display to showcase the hotel’s history. Guests are invited to email glasgowgros_events@hilton.com for more information or to share their photos and stories.

Edinburgh Showcase 2019: 'Frankenstein' Battersea Arts Centre & BAC Beatbox Academy
Battersea Arts Centre inspires people to take creative risks to shape the future. The organisation presents and develops contemporary performance, working closely with artists and communities. Its work travels across the UK and the world and it is committed to becoming the UK's first ‘relaxed venue’. This is a new concept that builds on the principles of ‘relaxed performances’. It’s designed to extend a warm welcome to people who might find it hard to follow conventions of theatre etiquette, including those with a sensory sensitivity or learning disability.
BAC Beatbox Academy is Battersea Arts Centre's young performance collective. Now in its tenth year, the collective nurtures rising talent and pushes the boundaries of sound and music through its work with 8–29 year-olds.
In Frankenstein: How To Make A Monster, six performers take apart Mary Shelley's original story and reimagine a world of modern monsters. The show explores the pressure to conform in our over-stimulated digital age and draws on musical inspirations from Pachelbel to The Prodigy. Co-authored by young people from BAC Beatbox Academy, who shape all aspects of presenting the work, this is a slick theatrical experience that showcases incredible beatboxing, singing and spoken word.
Frankenstein: How To Make A Monster is in Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It features curtain raiser performances by pupils from Leith Academy. The British Council’s biennial Edinburgh Showcase is the single biggest opportunity for UK theatre companies to introduce their work to international promoters. The programme comprises new work that represents the very best of contemporary theatre and dance, reflecting the breadth and diversity of British performing arts. The 2019 Edinburgh Showcase takes place between Monday 19-Saturday 24 August 2019.

Edinburgh Showcase 2017: 'A Machine they're Secretly Building' by Proto-type Theater
Based in Lincoln, Proto-type is a company of artists creating diverse and original performances ranging from touring theatre and radio drama to multi-media and pervasive technology experiences. Thought-provoking and imaginative, their stage work is always beautifully crafted and underpinned by a slick, minimalist design aesthetic.
A Machine they’re Secretly Building is a multi-media production featuring live action, film, animation and a specially composed musical score. Made in response to the impact of high-profile whistleblowers such as Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning and Julian Assange, the show looks at the politics they are involved with – truth, secrecy, privacy, government. Addressing serious concerns through ironic wit and fact, the company draws audiences into the decisions of the past and their effect on our future in a performance that is both a protest, and a cautionary tale against inaction.
