El Día de la Virgen del Carmen takes place on 16 July to commemorate the patron saint of sailors and fishermen and is observed all over Spain, its islands and Spanish speaking countries. Fishing communities pay homage to the Virgin for the seagoing protection of their mariners by staging traditional maritime processions and blessings of decorated fishing boats around the ports and harbours.
How the fiesta got its name can be traced back to biblical times. The Virgen del Carmen, also known as Nuestra Señora de Monte Carmelo ('Our Lady of Mount Carmel'), is the name given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order. The first Carmelites were followers of the old prophet Elijah who retreated to a cave in Mount Carmelo near Haife (Israel) to pray for rain, where it is said a cloud rose from the sea and covered the mountain, producing abundant rain, in the middle of which an image of the Virgin Mary appeared. These Christian hermits lived on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the late 12th to mid 13th centuries.
During this time, on 16 July 1251, the English born head of the Carmelite Order Simon Stock claimed to have had a vision of the Virgin Mary with her baby son in her arms, which led to the effigy that proceeds today's processions in honour of 'El Virgen del Carmel'. Then, with the invasion of the Saracens, the Carmelites were forced to leave. One ancient tradition says that before departing, the Virgin appeared to them as they prayed for her protection and promised to be their Star of the Sea, ('Stella Maris').
Mariners, particularly in Spain as well as the Spanish Armada, soon embraced this title andVirgen_del_carmen-3therefore the 'Virgen del Carmen' also became known as 'Stella Maris', and was adopted by sailors and fishermen as their patron. To seafarers, Stella Maris is also the Polaris or Pole Star, the guide which early mariners relied on for their safe navigation.
It wasn't until the end of the 18th century that the seaborne processions were initiated to celebrate El Día de la Virgen del Carmen on 16 July, which led to the official recognition of the 'Virgen del Carmen' as patron saint of the Navy a century later.
Today, 'Salve Marinera' (Salutation of the seas), the official anthem of the Spanish Navy, is sung during the Blessing of the Boats, the first line of which is ¡Salve!, Estrella de los mares', (Hail, Star of the Sea).

Si alguna vez te has preguntado, qué se puede visitar con niños en Menorca, aquí te traigo un lugar que me encantó. El Lloc de menorca no es un zoo, es una reserva de animales muy especial, que merece la pena visitar. Yo no iba con niños, y sin embargo me encantó.
Lo que más me impacto es que los animales están en su recinto y eres tú el que entra en sus espacios y no al revés. Llegué a darle comida a una familia de lémures en mis propias manos!!
