Once only popular among wholesalers and traders, Chatuchak Weekend Market has reached a landmark status as a must-visit place for tourists. Its sheer size and diverse collections of merchandise will bring any seasoned shoppers to their knees – this is where you can literally shop ‘till you drop’.
The 35-acre (68-rai) area of Chatuchak is home to more than 8,000 market stalls. On a typical weekend, more than 200,000 visitors come here to sift through the goods on offer. Veteran shoppers would agree that just about everything is on sale here, although not all at the best bargain rates. But if you have one weekend in Bangkok, squeeze in a day trip to Chatuchak Weekend Market and you will not be disappointed.
Navigating Chatuchak Weekend Market
For first-timers, ‘conquering’ Chatuchak may seem like an impossible task, but worry not. There is a system to help you navigate your way through Chatuchak. Inside, one main walkway encircles the entire market, and it branches off into a series of numbered alleyways called Soi 1, Soi 2, Soi 3, and so on.
These alleyways are grouped into sections, with 27 sections in all. You will find more than one category of goods contained in one section, and the same category of goods will appear again in the other sections. In terms of locating your category of goods, this system is rather useless; but it will come in handy when you try to locate your particular stall or where your exact location is on the Chatuchak map.
Another way to find your way around Chatuchak is to find points of reference as you go along. The BTS and MRT stations as well as banks and numbered entrance gates are good points of references, as you will come across them as you turn corners. Then again, use the map to locate these references to find your correct orientation.
What’s For Sale?
If you can dream it up, Chatuchak probably has it. Here, you will be amazed at the sheer variety of merchandise, whether a Moroccan lamp, an antique wooden chest, a pair of vintage Levi’s jeans, or, on the exotic side, a python.

When buying goods at Chatuchak, particularly ‘antiques’, it is wise to exercise a few precautions. Check your goods thoroughly to see whether there is any damage, as many vendors sell factory rejects. For ‘antiques’, don’t trust the vendor when he tells you it is genuine. It’s better to bring along an expert, unless you are happy with what you are paying for.

Ancient Siam (formerly known as Ancient City)(Thai: เมืองโบราณ, Mueang Boran) is a park constructed under the patronage of Lek Viriyaphant and spreading over 200 acres (0.81 km2) in the shape of Thailand.
The founder's original idea was to create a golf course with miniatures of Thailand's historically significant structures spreaded around the course. During his research he found most structures being severely damaged over time and decided instead of creating new miniatures to save the original structures when possible or re-creating them full size or scaled down.
Ancient Siam is dubbed as the world's largest outdoor museum. Situated close to the Crocodile Farm in Samut Prakan province, the 320-hectare city features 116 structures of Thailand's famous monuments and architectural attractions. The grounds of Ancient Siam correspond roughly to the shape of the Kingdom, with each of the monuments lying at their correct places geographically. Some of the buildings are life-size replicas of existing or former sites, while others are scaled down.
The replicas were constructed with the assistance of experts from the National Museum to ensure historical accuracy. Outstanding works include the former Grand Palace of Ayutthaya (destroyed in the Burmese invasion of 1767), Phimai Sanctuary in Nakhon Ratchasima, and Wat Khao Phra Viharn on the Cambodian border.

As I tell you in the video, I found the coin on a laundry machine in a school here in Denmark. I have never been in Thailand but I would like to go there for a vacation if it hadn't such a DAMN HOT climate !!!!

Viharnra Sien is a hidden treasure.
You won't find it in many tourist books and it's not on the normal list of day-trips on offer.
Despite this modesty, it is not only one of the finest attractions in Pattaya; it also houses one of the finest art collections in Southeast Asia.
Viharna Sien is a collection of priceless artifacts and the lifetime's work of one man with a passion for China and Thailand. Rare paintings, chiseled bronze statues and elegant rooms form this outstanding site.
Sa-nga Kulkobkiat, the man behind this creation, was born in 1925 in Bangkok. He grew up in China and spent his life devoted to Thai and Chinese cultures.
He created Viharnra Sien to house a lifetime's collection of art and artifacts. Granted Royal permission in 1987, and His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej opened the seven-rai site a year later. It is thought to be the only collection of its kind outside China. Sa-nga Kulkobkiat died in 2003 and a large bronze statue now sits by the entrance. Near the statue, incense sticks burn in front of more statues of princesses, dolphins and wizards.
Inside the main building visitors are greeted by three Metraiya Buddhas of diminishing size. Behind these Buddhas are hundreds of pieces of art that range from the enormous to the precious, creating a somber but spectacular setting.
To the left are 18 arhats, or disciples of the Buddha. These are found in nearly every Chinese temple, but these ones are rather special. The ones on show here are hand-made terracotta and are the largest ever created. Each arhat stands in a particular pose, showing the differing forms of enlightenment.
Near these is a collection of pottery, notable for the exquisite quality. Dating back to the Han, Tang and Shang dynasties, many retain their colour and all retain their style.
Perhaps one of the most interesting facets of this collection is that there are little surprises in every corner. There are the eight paintings of the eight Immortals dating back more than 500 years to the Ming dynasty. Or there is a Royal throne, tucked away in a corner that once held centrestage in the Beijing Palace. Or opposite this is the first-ever instrument made to locate earthquakes.
There is more to this place than just odd surprises. A terracotta army which was unearthed in 1974 has lines of miniature soldiers, horses and charioteers in what is one of the only examples of such an army outside of China.
In a reception room to the rear, wonderfully-carved teak chairs are lined up around a glorious room, decorated with tapestries of Chinese waterfalls and mountains.
A small opening leads to the two upper floors. On the first is a giant golden statue and colourful Chinese paintings on truly enormous walls.
Step outside and there is the centre's zenith. Bronze statues occupy an open-air courtyard, giving a sense of grandeour and magnificence. In the centre stand statues representing Chinese folklore. Behind them are a group of Shaolin monks, each displaying the forms for which they are legendary. The statues seem to yell and roar as they strike each position, their fists taut and legs stretched.
Next to the Shaolin monks is a small group of characters, each representing a traditional Chinese way of life. An old man smiles as he pours water into a ladle while two men sit playing chess, one man deep in thought as he considers his next move, his finger wavering over a piece.
Most things here are Chinese, but true to its owners love for Thailand, there is an art room dedicated to more local pieces. String puppets depicting epic Thai tales sit in glass cages, while high on the wall hang paintings showing the story of Thailand's greatest Kings, from Taksin the Great to Rama V to the current Monarch.
The site is now owned by the Thai Royal family, meaning it will remain free from commercial exploitation. It is certainly worthy of such protection, as it houses such an incredible collection of art.
One of the benefits of not being in visitor books is that there are relatively few visitors. Those who do make the effort to find the place will find they are free to wonder in relative tranquility, interrupted only by the occasional monk taking photos with his mobile phone.
Viharnra Sien is a remarkable place, and a fitting tribute to a man who spent so many years collecting so much. Pattaya may not be renowned as a cultural hotspot but here there is a place overflowing with art and heritage. (pics: Ko Chang)

Located approximately 2 kilometers north of the illustrious white temple in the Chiang Rai Province you will encounter the much celebrated Black House. It consists of a collection of almost 40 houses where the color black predominates and where death is showcased in many forms and certainly not for the weak hearted.
Once you enter the Black House you will see an intact elephant skeleton, skulls of various creatures which cannot be fathomed at first sight in its raw bone form. Skins of bears, tigers, reptiles, cracked eggs, furniture made out of animal bones, various skulls and bones that are used to decorate the ornate buildings and many more carcasses of exotic animals.
What comes across to many a visitor is how it becomes increasingly difficult to fathom out one’s body after years of decaying to the point of being almost unidentifiable?
The Black house or “Baan Dum” as it is known in Thailand is a museum that is free to all visitors and the compound consists of many unique buildings. The architecture of the buildings gives a whole new dimension to your viewing pleasure as it is unique and each building consists of things that inspire the artist.
The inspired works of art by artist Thawan Duchanee is somewhat not in line with the conservative culture of Thailand and at times created many a storm in a tea cup. In the gallery attached to the museum you will be able to see and purchase his work.
The Artist Thawan Duchanee has practiced his works of art in many parts of the world and held many solo exhibitions in Asia, West Germany, England, Australia, Amsterdam, New York, Tokyo and held many exhibitions in Thailand and in many more western countries. He has received world wide acclaim for his genre of work. His paintings and other works of art showcasing aggression, eroticism, mortality, deterioration, lunacy and brings forward his rich genius, vigor and resolve and is considered a maestro of contemporary art with an Asian perspective.
