SICILIAN EXPERIENCE | Taormina, Catania, Syracuse

SICILY, MAY 2017
After landing at Catania airport we took a bus to Taormina where we stayed for 3 nights and managed to visit nearly every place we had planned on visiting.
One of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily - Isola Bella - is just one cable car ride (or one bus stop) away from Taormina center, taking one only 3 minutes to get down there. We definitely do not recommend omitting blue caves, although we were not lucky enough to see them due to heavy weather.
If You are interested, you can see a show at one of the largest amphitheaters in Italy - Teatro Antico and after that you can walk down Corso Umberto and enjoy glass of Sicilian wine or Granita (local specialty - we have been told, but we recommend trying also arancini, cannoli and others as we find them delicious).
If you are Godfathers fan - you should definitely visit Savocca, there is HopOnHopOff bus and also local buses going over there. Vitello bar and Chiesa di San Nicolò look just like in the movie.
After few days in Taormina we moved on by train to Catania, one of the largest cities in Italy, neighbouring active volcano Mount Etna. We arrived on time to go to one of the largest local markets. Apart from that we went to city center and fell in love with the Catania night life.
Syracuse was one day trip from Catania. It was Magna Graecia city once, Archimedes spent his whole life there. If this fact together with Antic ruins is not enough for You to visit Syracuse - Caseificio Borderi certainly is. They make The Best panini ever. Long queue is certainly worth waiting (in fact You are never waiting - you are enjoying a world class show).

Ferries to Sicily:
Siracusa is a historic city in southern Italy, the capital of the province of Syracuse. The city is famous for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheatres, architecture, and as the birthplace of Archimedes. This 2,700 year-old city played a key role in ancient times, when it was one of the major powers of the Mediterranean world. Syracuse is located in the south-east corner of the island of Sicily, right by the Gulf of Syracuse next to the Ionian Sea.
The city was founded by Ancient Greek Corinthians and became a very powerful city-state. Syracuse was allied with Sparta and Corinth, exerting influence over the entire Magna Grecia area of which it was the most important city. Once described by Cicero as the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all, it later became part of the Roman Republic and Byzantine Empire. After this Palermo overtook it in importance, as the capital of the Kingdom of Sicily. Eventually the kingdom would be united with the Kingdom of Naples to form the Two Sicilies until the Italian unification of 1860.
In the modern day, the city is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site along with the Necropolis of Pantalica. In the central area, the city itself has a population of around 125,000 people. The inhabitants are known as Siracusans, and the local language spoken by its inhabitants is the Sicilian language. Syracuse is mentioned in the Bible in the Acts of the Apostles book at 28:12 as Paul stayed there.

Syracuse or Siracusa in Italian, is a historic city on the island of Sicily, the capital of the Italian province of Syracuse. The city is notable for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheaters, architecture, and as the birthplace of the preeminent mathematician and engineer Archimedes. This 2,700-year-old city played a key role in ancient times, when it was one of the major powers of the Mediterranean world. Syracuse is located in the southeast corner of the island of Sicily, next to the Gulf of Syracuse beside the Ionian Sea.
The city was founded by Ancient Greek Corinthians and Teneans and became a very powerful city-state. Syracuse was allied with Sparta and Corinth and exerted influence over the entirety of Magna Graecia, of which it was the most important city. Described by Cicero as the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all, it equaled Athens in size during the fifth century BC. It later became part of the Roman Republic and Byzantine Empire. With the emperor Constans II it was the capital of the Roman Empire (663-669).
The inhabitants are known as Siracusans. Syracuse is mentioned in the Bible in the Acts of the Apostles book at 28:12 as Paul stayed there. The patron saint of the city is Saint Lucy; she was born in Syracuse and her feast day, Saint Lucy's Day, is celebrated on 13 December.

Italy vacations: why Taormina is one of the best places to visit in Sicily...
Are you planning your next Sicily holidays and you are wondering where to stay in Sicily and what to in this amazing island?
As a tour planner dedicated to our beloved Sicily we help you experience the island from a different point of view and we recommend you to stay in Taormina, the jewel of Sicily!
Because of the strategic location and the Greek soul, Taormina is one of the most beautiful places in the world.
The town was built on a fertile hill (200 m above a turquoise sea) and overlooks the beautiful bay of Isola Bella with a spectacular view of Mount Etna, the highest volcano in Europe.
Taormina combines the natural beauty with the artistic and archaeological heritage: in addition to the nice cathedral and the streets of the old town, Taormina is famous for its ancient theater (built by the Greeks around the second century bC), that is the place of important music and theatre shows, especially during the summer.
Taormina was originally the center of Hellenistic culture, it has attracted the attention of many artists and writers in modern times and today is the most fashionable destination in Sicily.
It is possible to combine the guided walking tour of Taormina with the visit of Mt. Etna and a great lunch and wine tasting at a winery on the slopes of the tallest active volcano in Europe.
On request we can provide you with a licensed English speaking tourist guide to experience a great guided tour of Taormina.
Since we arrange a private vehicle with an English speaking driver your experience in Taormina is always fully customizable.
