Sierra Nevada Mountains, Sierra Nevada National Park, Granada, Almería, Spain, Europe
The Sierra Nevada (meaning snowy range in Spanish) is a mountain range in the region of Andalucia, provinces of Granada and Almería in Spain. It contains the highest point of continental Spain, Mulhacén at 3,478 metres (11,411 ft) above sea level. It is a popular tourist destination, as its high peaks make skiing possible in one of Europe's most southerly ski resorts, in an area along the Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its warm temperatures and abundant sunshine. At its foothills is found the city of Granada and, a little further, Almería and Málaga. Parts of the range have been included in the Sierra Nevada National Park. The range has also been declared a biosphere reserve. The Sierra Nevada Observatory and the IRAM radiotelescope are located on the northern slopes at an elevation of 2,800 metres (9,200 ft). The Sierra Nevada was formed during the Alpine Orogeny, a mountain-building event that also formed the European Alps to the east and the Atlas Mountains of northern Africa across the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The Sierra as observed today formed during the Paleogene and Neogene Periods (66 to 1.8 million years ago) from the collision of the African and Eurasian continental plates. Central to the mountain range is a ridge running broadly west-south-west - east-north-east. For a substantial distance, the watershed stays consistently above 3,000 metres (9,800 ft). On the southern side of the range, several long but narrow river valleys lead off towards the south-west, separated by a number of subsidiary ridges. On the steeper and craggier northern side, the valleys have less regular orientations. This side is dominated by the Rio Genil which starts near Mulhacén and into which many of the other rivers flow.

Travel to Granada: Skiing in Sierra Nevada, Andalucia I Vlog I Spain
First things first, Im so sorry I haven't uploaded for the past weeks. We have been on a long distance travel to the Philippines and there it was impossible to upload anything big. Then past week we have shooting in Cadiz, and for some sort of reason it was impossible too. So my apologies for that.
So, who would have thought you can travel to one of Spain´s hotest destinations and actually ski there, and not just a little ski, but a good quality one with long tracks and endless tapas on the Aprés Ski.
Well, you can and you would if you go to Sierra Nevada, belonging to Granada´s province (so you have the Albayzin just across) and being the second highest mountain in western Europe after the French alps (I didn't know that!).
Hope you enjoy our travels, as always, we did!
Cheers!
PS: A second and big I´m sorry, again, for the lousy sound. Had a problem with my audio recorder and couldn't do it any better.

Skiing in the Sierra Nevada, Granada
Sierra Nevada is Europe’s most southerly ski resort. It offers one of Europe’s longest ski seasons, usually starting in late November and running until early May. If you're looking for a ski holiday with almost guaranteed sunshine, Sierra Nevada should be high on your list.
It's just over an hour’s drive from the beautiful beaches on the Costa Tropical and under thirty minutes from the centre of the Granada and the Alhambra Palace. The age-old saying of skiing in the morning and swimming in the sea in the afternoon really is a reality in Sierra Nevada.

Travel diary: Andalucia 1 (flying, Sierra Nevada)
Andalucia is a great place to travel. For this trip I roughly followed my brothers itinerary
This first part includes:
Paragliding by the mountain road behind Otivar
Hiking up to the snowy Sierra Nevada (6 April 2018 - too windy to fly)
Also I was listening to The Silk Roads (Peter Frankopan), if I listen to a chapter I can remember where I was when I first heard it!
Electric bicycle tours in Sierra Nevada National Park in Granada (Spain)
This video will show you more about the Trevenque Tour we organize within the National Park. It was filmed by the TV Program Destino Andalucia (Canal Sur TV).

Sierra Nevada National Park, Granada, Almería, Spain, Europe
The Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada (known as the Sierra Nevada National Park in English) is located in Granada and Almería provinces in south-eastern Spain. It was declared a national park on 14 January 1999. It stretches from the Alpujarra to El Marquesado and the Lecrin Valley, covering a total area of 85,883 hectares, making it the largest national park in Spain. It incorporates the municipalities of Abla, Abrucena, Alboloduy, Alsodux, Bayárcal, Beires, Canjáyar, Fiñana, Fondón, Laujar de Andarax, Nacimiento, Ohanes, Paterna del Río, Rágol, Las Tres Villas, Aldeire, Alpujarra de La Sierra, Bérchules, Bubión, Busquístar, Cáñar, Capileira, Dílar, Dólar, Dúrcal, Ferreira, Güéjar Sierra, Huéneja, Jerez del Marquesado, Juviles, Lanjarón, Lanteira, Lecrín, Lugros, Monachil, Nevada, Nigüelas, Pampaneira, Pórtugos, Soportújar, La Taha, Trevélez, Valor and La Zubia. There are more than 20 peaks over 3,000 meters, with the highest being Mulhacén (3479 m), Veleta (3396 m)[3] and Alcazaba (3371 m). The rivers that rise on the north face of the range feed the Guadalquivir basin, the most important ones being the Fardes and Genil. Meanwhile, the rivers that rise on the west and south faces run down into the Mediterranean. These include the Dúrcal, Ízbor, Trevélez and Poqueira, which are all tributaries of the Guadalfeo, which itself rises in the Sierra Nevada, and the Adra and Andarax, with their tributaries. The south and west faces are where you will find the majority of the almost 50 high-mountain lakes that exist in the Sierra Nevada, many of which are also the sources of streams and rivers. Much of the landscape, particularly above 2,400 metres (which was the perpetual snow line prior to the Holocene period) was shaped by the action of glaciers, resulting in characteristic U-shaped valleys. Due to its isolated location in the far south of Europe, the flora and fauna of the Sierra Nevada are unique. During the last ice age, species moved south to escape the colder climate in the north, and as the climate grew warmer again, these species survived by taking refuge in the mountains. 2,100 plant species have been catalogued in the park, 116 of which are classified as threatened, and over 60 of which are unique to the area (endemic). Threatened species include the Artemisia granatensis, a sub-species of the Marsh Gentian endemic to the Sierra Nevada and the Alpine Meadow-rue. One of the most emblematic plants of the Sierra Nevada is the Plantago nivalis, also known as the Snow Star. The park is home to a thriving Spanish ibex population, along with other species such as wild boar, martens, badgers and wildcats. Native bird species include the Golden Eagle, Bonelli’s Eagle, Common Kestrel, Little Owl, Eurasian Eagle-owl, European Goldfinch, Serin, Ortolan, Dartford Warbler, Wheateater, Red-legged Partridge and Common Quail. On the edge of the park lies the Botanic Garden of Cortijuela, where the endemic species of the Sierra are investigated and preserved. Popular bases for hiking in the Sierra Nevada include Capileira, Trevélez, Monachil, Güéjar Sierra and Bubión. It is relatively easy to reach the summits of Mulhacén and Veleta, whereas Alcazaba is slightly harder to reach. Dotted around the Sierra Nevada there are a number of mountain cabins (refugios) designed for the use of hikers. The three staffed cabins charge a small amount if you want to stay the night. There are a further six unstaffed cabins in a reasonable state of repair, which are free of charge.
