Zip Line into Mexico's Copper Canyon - Sierra Tarahumara
Parque de Aventura Barrancas del Cobre – Copper Canyon, Mexico
Date: February 10th 2018
GoPro point of view from the Zip Rider at Parque de Aventura Barrancas del Cobre. Located in Mexico’s famed Copper Canyon (bigger than the Grand Canyon!, sprawling at over 8,350 feet long (more than a mile and a half!), and with a 17% grade that drops you almost 1,500 feet, it is possible to hit speeds of 84 mph or faster! It was once considered the longest Zip Line in the world, but today that belongs to Dubai!
The ride includes a gondola ride back up, but we opted for a hike back up (until we got lost and missed the last gondola back. Thankfully the local Tarahumara were able to contact the operators to come rescue us! Thank you so much!)
If you weigh more the faster and farther you go - as you will see one of us stopped just short of the end and they quickly came out to pull you in!

Welcome to Copper Canyon in Mexico
Copper Canyon is a group of canyons consisting of six distinct canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental in the southwestern part of the state of Chihuahua in northwestern Mexico. The overall canyon system is larger and portions are deeper than the Grand Canyon in Arizona.[1] The canyons were formed by six rivers that drain the western side of the Sierra Tarahumara (a part of the Sierra Madre Occidental). All six rivers merge into the Rio Fuerte and empty into the Gulf of California. The walls of the canyon are a copper/green color, which is where the name originates.

Insight into the Tarahumaras life, Mexico
The introduction text is how a priest in 1600 descripted the Tarahumaras.
The Indians Tarahumara live at great distance, separated from each other and scattered. They prefer to live in ravines and canyons and in cold, inhospitable mountains where they have dwellings.
Lupe and Miguel raised five childern (three boys, two girls) in their cave dwelling with a wide open view of the Batopilas valley.
Now in their 50's, they occupy their time with daily chores and keeping the fire of the cooking stove burning to prepare food for the frequent visits of their childern who live scattered among the mountains.
During my four day visit I had plenty of time to think about the real life.

Raramuri, Barranca del Cobre, MX
Originally inhabitants of much of the state of Chihuahua, the Rarámuri retreated to the high sierras and canyons such as the Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre Occidental on the arrival of Spanish explorers in the sixteenth century. The area of the Sierra Madre Occidental which they now inhabit is often called the Sierra Tarahumara because of their presence.
Current estimates put the population of the Rarámuri in 2011 at between 50,000 and 60,000 people. Most still practice a traditional lifestyle, inhabiting natural shelters such as caves or cliff overhangs, as well as small cabins of wood or stone. Staple crops are corn and beans; however, many of the Rarámuri still practice transhumance, raising cattle, sheep, and goats. Almost all Rarámuri migrate in some form or another in the course of the year.

Copper Canyon (#1): El Paso to Creel
The state's capital and second largest city (1.7 million), Chihuahua unfortunately doesn't get much attention from North American vacationers. Most visitors are either in transit overnight on their way south to Mexico's interior, or heading westward into the Sierra Tarahumara mountains on a Copper Canyon excursion. Founded in 1707, the city is very comfortable and prosperous. It showcases some interesting museums, colonial era vestiges, and turn-of-the-century architecture. It is worthy of at least a few days of exploring, and makes an excellent base for sightseeing around Chihuahua state. Only six hours from the El Paso, Texas, the city is a historical gem. Some of Mexico's most famous citizens, such as Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, Benito Juarez, and Pancho Villa, have been a part of Chihuahua's past.
Creel (creh-EHL) is known as the Gateway to the Copper Canyon. And it is a popular starting point for exploring the canyons. The town has the feeling of a late 19th century logging town and is set high (2,340 meters (7,669 feet)) in the mountains in a valley surrounded by pine forest. As the canyon's largest town (pop. 6,500), many visitors will stock up on supplies and information here before their trek through these magnificent canyons. The town is located 250 kilometers (150 miles) from Chihuahua City and takes about 3-4 hours driving time. In Creel, it's worthwhile to visit the local Casa del Artesano Indigena (House of Indigenous Handicrafts) run by the state, and the Artesanías Misíon (Mission Store) with all proceeds going to a local indigenous hospital. Both places offer fine Tarahumara crafts, and you can also find them in local shops along Ave. Lopez Mateos, Creel's main street. Creel has a great number of natural attractions nearby and is an eco-tourist's dream location.

It runs 673 km (418 mi), traversing the Copper Canyon, a beautiful and rugged series of canyons that have led some to call this the most scenic railroad trip on the continent. It is both an important transportation system for locals and a draw for tourists.
The tracks pass over 37 bridges and through 86 tunnels, rising as high as 2,400 m (7,900 ft) above sea level near Divisadero (the continental divide), a popular lookout spot over the canyons. Each one-way trip takes roughly 16 hours. The track also crosses over itself to gain elevation.

They are renowned for their long distance running ability. Living traditional lifestyles, the Tarahumara raise livestock and live in small homes within the canyon. They weave baskets and offer other handicrafts for sale. If you have a chance to visit here, do it!
