Famously known as Changu Lake, Tsomgo Lake is one the most popular glacial lakes in India. It is situated in the district of East Sikkim, Sikkim , India, It Is located about 38 km away from Gangtok , the capital of Sikkim at an elevation of 12,400 ft. The length , width and average depth of this lake is respectively Nearly 1 km , 0.5 km and 15 m ( 50 ft) . In Bhutia Language TSO = Lake and MGO = Head . In Bhutia language 'Tsomgo' means 'source of the water' or 'Source of Lake' .The lake gets filled with water from the melting snows of the mountains surrounding the lake.This glacial lake is conceived sacred by the local people. It is a famous tourist destination of North or North-East India.
Nathula Pass is located at a distance of nearly 53 kms from Gangtok at an altitude of 14,140 ft from sea level. This video was taken on 10 May 2015 at around 12 o’clock. The weather was very good but all of a sudden it changed and started snow fall. We can say weather is very unpredictable here. Tourists are allowed to go close to the indo-china border which is a fence of barbed wires . Tourists are not allowed to take any video or photographs near the border .one can see the snow capped mountains of Eastern Himalayas .adventurous trip with amazing view .With the temperature dipping to nearly 10 degree Celsius and wind speed of nearly 70 kms/hr ,its very difficult to withstand in that wild weather ,Hats off to our Army people.

Nearest airport is now - pakyong 31 kms away.
Nearest Airport Bagdogra:, if you want to first go to Darjeeling 123 kms
Nearest Railway station: Jalpaiguri: 120 kms.
Pakyong is the new airport in Sikkim at a distance of 29 kms from Gangtok but it was not operational when we went to sikkim.

Exclusive taxi from Bagdogra airport or NJP station to Gangtok: cost Rs 2500
Share cab you can get from Siliguri at cost of Rs 400 per person, you can even get a AC bus from siliguri to Gangtok at cost of Rs 400 per person, only thing frequency of bus is one every 2 hours.
You can take a auto from airport or NJP station to reach silliguri is not far: about 40 minutes cost Rs 150.

Here is my version of visiting Gurudongmar Lake. I opted for the shared cab option. there are also private cab option available which would cost you somenting around INR 25000.
This particular package that we opted for provided us with all meals and two night stay at lachen and Lachung, and costed us INR 4000 each ( the rates depends on the season and dates).

Overall, I am really impressed with this package. No Complains about about the place it is breath taking. One of the best places I have ever been to.

Darjeeling to Gangtok in Rain By RoadHimalayan Road Gangtok Tour 2018 part 01
Darjeeling to Gangtok by road is around 98 km,its take around 04 hours by a single break.
You can use share taxi or private one
share jeep basically Tata sumo and mahindra bolero from chwak bazar taxi stand darjeeling and also book your seat prior to travel.
Darjeeling to Gangtok: Rs. 2700 small taxi, Rs. 3000 large taxi. Kalimpong to Gangtok: Rs. 2500 small taxi, Rs. 2900 large taxi. NOTE: While returning from Gangtok to NJP, Bagdogra etc, expect the return fare to be higher than the forward fare as the taxi has to often go back empty.
Darjeeling hill town is 98kms from Gangtok. You will get private taxis as well as shared Jeeps from the taxi stands at Chowk Bazaar and Gandhi Road.. It takes about 4 hours to reach Gangtok from Darjeeling. The route is initially via Ghoom/Jore Bunglow, then along Peshok road down to Teesta Bridge where it meets NH31A. Up to Teesta, the road goes down hill and from there on uphill via Melli and then Rangpo which is the entry point of East Sikkim.

1. My suggestion is to choose the night train from Sealdah to reach NJP in the morning. You can choose between Kanchankanya EXP (13149), Darjeeling Mail (12343), Padatik Express (12377)
2. Auto fare from NJP to Siliguri is Rs.100. They may tell Rs.150-200, then upto your bargaining power.
3. NJP/Siliguri to Gangtok tata sumo fare sharing basis is Rs 200-250; Private/personal car booking is Rs.2500.
4. Hotel fare in Gangtok is depending upon which hotel you will choose. My suggestion is to choose hotel nearer to MG Marg Market.
5. Day 0 - Sealdah (Departure @ night)
Day 1 - NJP (Arrival @ morning) (can book tour here or from Gangtok) Take car for Gangtok (Arrival @ afternoon) Go to MG Marg Market (Can book tour from here also)
Day 2 - Changu/Baba Mandir/NathuLa (night stay @ Gangtok)

Gangtok is located at an altitude of 5,410 ft in East-Sikkim. Distance from NJP (the nearest major railway station) is 126kms, from Bagdogra airport 124kms (takes 4.5 hours from both), from Siliguri 114kms and from Darjeeling 98kms (4 hours). Private and shared taxi services are available in plenty between Gangtok and these places. There is also bus service from Siliguri SNT bus stand and helicopter service from Bagdogra airport to Gangtok. The name Gangtok means the 'Top of the Ridge'
Between 1894 to 1975 it was part of the Namgyal kingdom and a center of Royal administration. After that Sikkim became a state of India and Gangtok became the Capital of Sikkim.
Over the years Gangtok has experienced booming economy and advancement of lifestyle. However it has remained as a peaceful place with a mix of different cultures & ethnicity. Gangtok spreads over a forested mountain that faces the Kanchenjunga snow peaks. There are many vantage points in and around Gangtok from where you get magnificent views of Kanchenjunga and other Himalayan snow peaks. In fact every spur extending from this hill town offers a setting of a great sight.
The heart or the main hub of Gangtok town is M.G. Marg (i.e. Mahatma Gandhi Road), which has been converted into something like a long stretch of open promenade and a mall area. It's a pedestrian only zone and vehicles are not allowed here. This litter & smoke free zone has many glittering shops, restaurants & bars lined up on both sides.
There are benches laid out along the middle and both sides of the road (MG Marg) where you can relax and see the pedestrians passing by or tourists shopping around. When the natural light fades, the beautiful Victorian lamps on the street are lit up. It's a great place to hang around for a while and experience the bustling carnival like atmosphere.

You may want to take share cab for point to point travelling but then you can't travel to all tourist destinations.
Example from MG marg you can take a share cab for trolley point by paying Rs 20.. but you can't go to Hanuman Tok on share cab as on that route no share cab.,
OLA and uber taxi service not available.

Hey everyone! I recently went on a trip to Sikkim with my friend Shumnima (who is from Sikkim). During our trip to Sikkim, we explored Gangtok and the western parts of Sikkim (Pelling and around). Although I’ve been to Sikkim before, this trip was such a different experience, especially since I stayed and explored with a local.
This is the first video in my four part series of Sikkim. In this video, we travel from Mumbai to Bagdogra to Gangtok in Sikkim. We also went to MG Marg in Gangtok and I tried some delicious local Sikkimese food! Keep an eye out for the next part of this series where I explore Pelling and West Sikkim.

SILIGURI TO GANGTOK BUS JOURNEY. THE CHEAPEST WAY TO GANGTOK SIKKIM, FROM SILIGURI IS BY SNT (Sikkim Nationalized Transport) BUS.
This is the first episode of our Gangtok budget tour from Siliguri. in this video we shall be going to Gangtok from Siliguri on a SNT (Sikkim Nationalized Transport) Bus, via Sevoke, Teesta Bazaar, Melli Bazaar, Rangpo, Singtam and Tadong.
Bus tickets are available Online or at the ticket counter at SNT bus terminus in Siliguri from 06:00 hrs. First trip to Gangtok leaves at 06:00 hrs. Ticket fare is ₹ 150 (INR 150 ≈ USD 2) and thus it it the cheapest way to travel to Gangtok From Siliguri.

Gangtok is the capital city of Indian state Sikkim. Situated at an altitude of 5500 feet, it is a beautiful and well organised city where you can get all modern facilities like shopping mall, big departmental stores, movie theatre, restaurants, coffee shops and many others.
How to Reach Gangtok
By train reach New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station of West Bengal. There are several trains available from all major cities of the country to NJP. By air, reach Bagdogra airport first. From NJP the distance of Gangtok is 125Km and from Bagdogra, the distance is 124 Km. It will take 3 to 4 hours to reach Gangtok from Bagdogra or NJP by car. The rate of a car is between 2500 and 4000 rupees, depending on the number of seats available.
You can also avail a share cab run by Sikkim National Transport (SNT). The fare is INR 200-300 per person. There are also SNT organised bus services available to reach Gangtok from NJP. The rate is INR 90 per person.
Chopper service is also available from Bagdogra to Gangtok. Charge is INR 3500 per person one way.
Gangtok Site Seeing
Day -1
On day 1 of your Gangtok tour go for city site seeing tour. Hire a local cab for 10 points site seeing. The charge will be INR 3000 to 3500 for a day. The main spots to visit are:
Rumtek Monastery:
Rumtek Monastery is a gompa located near Gangtok. Currently, it is the largest monastery in Sikkim. It is home to the community of monks and here they perform the rituals and practices of the Karma Kagyu lineage.
MG Marg:
The heart of the city is MG Marg. It is the main street of Gangtok and is a great place to hang around. The street is India’s first litter and spit free zone. No vehicle is allowed in this street. You can also enjoy shopping while walking through this road. Every year, in the month of December Gangtok food and culture festival is held here.
Banjhakri Falls:
It is one of the most beautiful places in Gangtok. The park surrounding the falls area is well maintained. Overall, a nice place to relax.
Seven Sister Water Falls:
It is another beautiful waterfalls near Gangtok where you can enjoy nature.
Gangtok Ropeway:
Take a ride of Gangtok Ropeway to get a bird’s eye view of the city.
Ganesh Tok:
It is a temple of Lord Ganesha located 6km from Gangtok town. Visit here to pray Lord Ganesha and also to enjoy the enchanting views of the surroundings from the viewing lounge with glass panel.
Tashi View Point:
It is located 8Km away from Gangtok town and offers a stunning view of Mount Kanchenjunga snow peaks on a clear day.
Hanuman Tok:
The famous Hanuman temple is popular for its wonderful serene ambience and a viewing area that offers spectacular view of Kanchenjunga range.
Nmgyal Institute of Tibetan Technology:
It is the one of the main Tibetan Institutes of the world. You can see various rare Tibetan and Sanskrit manuscript here. The place is also known for beautiful Thanka paintings.
Enchey Monastery:
This is another famous site to visit near Gangtok.
Day 2:
On day 2 of your Gangtok trip go for Nathula Pass, Tsomgo Lake and Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple tour. For this tour you have to submit 2 passport size photograph and a photocopy of your voter Id card to the authority in order to get a permit. You can submit those documents to your hotel or travel agent and they will get the permit for you.
Tsomgo is a beautiful glacial lake 38 Km away from Gangtok located at an altitude of 12,400 feet.
Nathula Pass is situated at the Indo China Border. It is 18 Km away from Tsomgo Lake. Visit Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple on your way back to Gangtok.
From Gangtok Local Cars will charge INR 800-1200 per person for this tour.
Day 3
On 3rd day, you can visit south Sikkim. The famous spots are Namchi and Temi Tea Garden.
In Namchi visit Namchi Monastery, Ralang Monastery, Tendong hill and recently inaugurated Siddhesvara Dham. This spot is famous for the giant 87 feet tall statue of Lord Shiva. In this temple you can see the replicas of four Dhams of the country.
From Namchi go to Temi Tea garden. An organic tea estate with beautiful surroundings. This is a great place to relax.
Where to stay
The hotel of Sikkim tourism Hotel Mount Jopuno. Double bed room charge is INR 2000 to 2200.
