[4K] Edinburgh, Scotland (2019) Evening Walking tour of City Centre
If you're wondering what Edinburgh nightlife is like, then join us for this virtual city evening walk in Scotland's capital city.
We start our 4K walk on Waverley Bridge, just next to the Edinburgh Waverley railway station. We cross into Cockburn Street, a great street to visit for some of the best Edinburgh restaurants, bars and independent shops, including every Harry Potter fan's favourite, Museum Context, with it's film and book related items.
We emerge out onto the High Street that forms part of the Royal Mile. We loop around South Bridge and Blair Street to take in the restaurants of Hunter Square before rejoining our walk along the Royal Mile.
Passing the Adam Smith Monument and the Mercat Cross, we walk around Parliament Square behind St Gile's Cathedral before rejoining the High Street and Lawnmarket.
In front of the Hub (a grand Victorian spired building,) we turn down Upper Bow to join Victoria Street, which in turn leads us to the bustling Grassmarket - lined with more busy Edinburgh pubs and bars.
We end our walk with a drink in the Fiddler's Arms on King's Stables Road.

Lyrics:
Walk in your rainbow paradise
Strawberry lipstick state of mind
I get so lost inside your eyes
Would you believe it?
You don’t have to say you love me
You don’t have to say nothing
You don’t have to say you’re mine
Honey
I’d walk through fire for you
Just let me adore you
Oh honey
I’d walk through fire for you
Just let me adore you
Like it’s the only thing I’ll ever do
Like it’s the only thing I’ll ever do
Your wonder under summer skies
Brown skin and lemon over ice
Would you believe it?
You don't have to say you love me
I just wanna tell you something
Lately you’ve been on my mind
Honey
I’d walk through fire for you
Just let me adore you
Oh honey
I’d walk through fire for you
Just let me adore you
Like it’s the only thing I’ll ever do
Like it’s the only thing I’ll ever do
It’s the only thing I’ll ever do
I’d walk through fire for you
Just let me adore you
Oh honey
I’d walk through fire for you
Just let me adore you
Like it’s the only thing I’ll ever do
I’d walk through fire for you
Just let me adore you
Oh honey
Oh honey
I’d walk through fire for you
Just let me adore you
Like it’s the only thing I’ll ever do

Walking in BRISTOL / UK ????????- 4K 60fps (UHD)
Bristol in the southwest of England known for its maritime history. The city was a starting place for early voyages of exploration to the New World.
On this tour we explore nicely walkable centre. We start at the St James' Priory which is near the Bristol Coach Station. Quickly we go to the shopping area Broadmead where we check several shopping streets and also The Bearpit city park.
We head south to the Castle Park and cross the Castle bridge and get back to the old city. There it's a bit quieter this afternoon as most of the action happens at the former city-centre port, the Harbourside. The old harbour's warehouses now contain restaurants, shops.
The riverside stroll continues for a while. We follow the feeder canal and the River Avon. It's a relaxing weekend atmosphere with people and families walking around. We enjoy the path for a little while longer, pass the Brunel's SS Great Britain and finish our tour near the Bristol Marina and rowing club.
Note: I missed catching Banksy's The Girl With Pearl Earring on video on a wall near the marina though took a photo after when walking back. It's coming sometime to the website. A second tour walking back from Millenium square will be on the channel at some point

How to say the names of places in the UK
Mousehole?! There's a place called Mousehole? Yes, there is, but how do you pronounce it? The UK has some unusual city names, perhaps the most notorious of all being Worcestershire. Learn how to pronounce it and many more UK town names in this short pronunciation lesson. I will teach you how to pronounce names such as Kirkcudbright, Edinburgh, Durham, and more. You will find that it is simpler than you think because many of these names have endings in common, such as -shire and -bright. After watching this lesson, you will be able to pronounce the name of any UK city or town with confidence. It will surely come in handy during social conversations and even in your IELTS Speaking Task. Even if you're an English speaker from another country, you will want to watch this video before taking a trip to the UK, so that you don't get any of these completely wrong and make a fool of yourself :)
Next, watch some more of my videos about life, language, and culture in the UK:

TRANSCRIPT
Hi there, and welcome back to engVid. In this video you are going to learn how to pronounce some of the harder-to-pronounce places in the U.K. So, useful if you're planning a trip here, or if you're doing an IELTS speaking test and would like to refer to places in the U.K. Let's have a look at some guidelines, and then a little bit later we're going to look at some of the places that don't quite fit the rules.
So, with a place ending with: borough or burgh, you would expect it to sound: borough or burgh, but that's not what happens. It's normally shortened to something like: bra. For example: Edinburgh, Edinbra, Edinbra, Edinbra, got it? Okay? Not: Edinborough, okay?
Second one, with a place ending in cester, you shorten it to sta. For example, it's not: Bicester, it's: Bicesta, Bicesta. There is an exception, here, with: Cirencester, which is a lovely place out in the west of England. Cirencester, not Cirensta. Okay? Cirencester, that's an exception, there.
Next, on to counties. So, a county where... The U.K. is divided up into different region called counties. Lots of these end with shire, the shire, the countryside, but we pronounce it actually: shur. For example: Devonshire, Devonsha, not: Devonshire.
This one is particularly tricky to pronounce: Worcestershire, Wosteshur. So, basically what we're doing is we're going: Wost, and then we're abbreviating that: Woste, Wosteshur, and then we're putting a u in here. Worcestershire. You still with me? Good stuff, keep the concentration.
Now, wich often goes to ich, so we're just going to be taking out that w there. Wich goes to ich. Norwich, Norich, it's not: Nor-wich, okay? Norich. It's a lovely place in the east of England, beautiful cathedral, and my uncle is an estate agent, so go and say: Hi.
On to places ending in mouth. Obviously going to be places by the sea. For example... Can you spot my little mistake, here? Shouldn't be an f, it should be a th. A subtle difference, but important to get right. So it's: Teignmuth not Teignmouth. Okay? Teignmuth, it's a shorter vowel sound; we're not doing the sort of the o, it's a Teignmuth. So that's down in Devon, very scenic place in the southwest of the U.K.
Ham goes to um. For example, it's not: Durham, it's: Duram, so you're effectively losing that h. Durham, beautiful place in the northeast of England, very strong university in Durham. Right.
Wick goes to ick. For example, if I put the whole spelling of: Berwick-upon Tweed, you can see that we are missing this w out, so it becomes: Berick-upon Tweed. Nice coastal town, again, near the border with Scotland in the northeast of the U.K. Okay? Let's have a look at a few more anomalies and some exceptions to the rules.
I'm also going to be pointing out, with these exceptions, some excellent places to visit in the U.K. There's so many different exceptions, but the places listed here are worth checking out if you're coming to the U.K.
Tor, you would expect it to say: quay, something like that, but it's actually: Torkey, Torkey, and the same would apply for Newquay.
This place in Norfolk, you might expect it to be: Hunstanton, but actually you miss out the tan and it becomes: Hunston.
This is a place I went on honeymoon down in Cornwall. What do you think it says? Mousehole? It's not, it's: Mousol, a lovely fishing village down in Cornwall.
Again in Cornwall, what do you think: Fowey? Foey, okay? Maybe it's helpful to think of there being no w.

EDINBURGH (source Wikipedia):
Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland and one of its 32 council areas. It is located in Lothian on the Firth of Forth's southern shore.
Recognised as the capital of Scotland since at least the 15th century, Edinburgh is the seat of the Scottish Government, the Scottish Parliament and the supreme courts of Scotland. The city's Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence of the Monarchy in Scotland. Historically part of the county of Midlothian, the city has long been a centre of education, particularly in the fields of medicine, Scots law, literature, the sciences and engineering. It is the second largest financial centre in the United Kingdom and the city's historical and cultural attractions have made it the United Kingdom's second most popular tourist destination, attracting over one million overseas visitors each year.
Edinburgh is Scotland's second most populous city and the seventh most populous in the United Kingdom. The official population estimates are 464,990 (2012) for the Locality of Edinburgh (Edinburgh pre 1975 regionalisation plus Currie and Balerno), 507,170 (2016) for the City of Edinburgh, and 1,339,380 (2014) for the city region. Edinburgh lies at the heart of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland city region comprising East Lothian, Edinburgh, Fife, Midlothian, Scottish Borders and West Lothian.
The city is the annual venue of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. It is home to national institutions such as the National Museum of Scotland, the National Library of Scotland and the Scottish National Gallery. The University of Edinburgh, founded in 1582 and now one of four in the city, was placed 23rd in the QS World University Rankings in 2018. The city is also famous for the Edinburgh International Festival and the Fringe, the latter being the world's largest annual international arts festival. Historic sites in Edinburgh include Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the churches of St. Giles, Greyfriars and the Canongate, and the extensive Georgian New Town, built in the 18th century. Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town together are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has been managed by Edinburgh World Heritage since 1999.
LOCH NESS (source Wikipedia):
Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands extending for approximately 37 kilometres (23 miles) southwest of Inverness. Its surface is 16 metres (52 feet) above sea level. Loch Ness is best known for alleged sightings of the cryptozoological Loch Ness Monster, also known affectionately as Nessie. It is connected at the southern end by the River Oich and a section of the Caledonian Canal to Loch Oich. At the northern end there is the Bona Narrows which opens out into Loch Dochfour, which feeds the River Ness and a further section of canal to Inverness, ultimately leading to the North Sea via the Moray Firth.

Artists United Against Apartheid - Sun City
Not long after Band Aid and We Are The World focused musical attention on poverty and famine, a collection of artists took a similar approach in the struggle against apartheid. The initiator was Steven van Zandt - erstwhile guitarist in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band - who whipped up dozens of musicians to work on the project. They included Peter Gabriel, members of U2, Springsteen himself, Hall and Oates, Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Run DMC, Lou Reed, Jackson Browne and Keith Richards. Van Zandt wrote and produced the song and it reached the top 40 in several European nations, though not in the US.
Sun City is a large casino resort in the north-west of South Africa. During the apartheid years it was located in 'independent' state of Bophuthatswana, a phoney political entity that enabled white South Africans to visit a casino, gamble and attend strip shows, even though these activities were illegal within South Africa itself. The United Nations placed a cultural ban on artists touring or performing in South Africa - however many notable American and European acts ignored this and received large sums to perform at Sun City's massive auditorium. Amongst those to defy the ban included Linda Ronstadt, Queen, Laura Branigan, Rod Stewart, Julio Iglesias - and, ironically, black singers like Ray Charles, Dionne Warwick and Boney M. As a result, Van Zandt's song continually insists that I ain't gonna play Sun City:
Twenty-three million can't vote 'cause they're black
We're stabbing our brothers and sisters in the back
I wanna say I, I, I ain't gonna play Sun City
I, I, I ain't gonna play Sun City
Boputhuswana is so far away
But we know it's in South Africa
No matter what they say
You can't buy me, I don't care what you pay
Don't ask me Sun City because I ain't gonna play

ENGLAND IS MINE - OFFICIAL SHORT TRAILER
In 1970’s Manchester, Steven Morrissey (Jack Lowden – Dunkirk, A United Kingdom, ’71), an introverted, uncompromising teenager, finds himself frustrated with his working-class existence.
With dreams of a successful music career being dampened by his run-of-the-mill job at the local tax office, Steven finds solace in the city’s underground gig scene where he meets Linder Sterling (Jessica Brown Findlay – Downton Abbey, The Riot Club) – an intelligent, self-assured artist – who encourages him to make his ideas of superstardom a reality.
Culminating in his first meeting with Johnny Marr, ENGLAND IS MINE is a feature length origins story based on the early life of Morrissey, the outspoken former lead singer of seminal British band The Smiths. Directed by Academy Award and BAFTA Award nominated Mark Gill (The Voorman Problem) and produced by Baldwin Li (The Voorman Problem) and Orian Williams (Control), the film will have its world premiere at the closing night of this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival on Sunday 2nd July.
England Is Mine is in cinemas August 4.

Edinburgh Showcase 2019: 'Man on the Moon' by Keisha Thompson co-commissioned by Contact and STUN
Keisha Thompson is a Manchester-based writer, performance artist and producer. She makes socially engaged work that often interrogates taboo subjects. Her debut book, Lunar, features her poetry as well as the Man on the Moon script. She is Young People’s Producer at Contact, a leading venue that places young people at the heart of its activity, and Chair of Future’s Venture Foundation, a radical arts funding body. She was selected to be part of Leaders of Tomorrow, a scheme that prepares UK theatre practitioners from minority ethnic backgrounds for future leadership roles.
Man on the Moon is a poignant, witty and accessible solo show performed by Thompson. It's a personal and powerful work that tackles her father's mental health problems and their effect on the father-daughter relationship. Exploring black Britishness, the piece is made against a background where minority ethnic people are overrepresented in mental health institutions yet underrepresented as mental health practitioners. With poetry, looped sounds and storytelling, Thompson tells of cultural displacement, religious confusions and political paranoia; investigating masculinity, mental health and the family. Moonwhile, a poetic EP based on the show, was recently released online.
Man on the Moon is in Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The British Council’s biennial Edinburgh Showcase is the single biggest opportunity for UK theatre companies to introduce their work to international promoters. The programme comprises new work that represents the very best of contemporary theatre and dance, reflecting the breadth and diversity of British performing arts. The 2019 Edinburgh Showcase takes place between Monday 19-Saturday 24 August 2019.
