Pawtucket, Rhode Island - Appreciating Pawtucket
- Pawtucket, RI was born in 1671. This city was founded thirty-five years after Providence, Rhode Island. The American Industrial Revolution prompted the use of the Blackstone River.
Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park - Pawtucket, Rhode Island
The Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor follows the Blackstone River Valley from Worchester, Massachusetts to Providence, Rhode Island. America's Industrial Revolution was born here with the creation of Slater Mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the country's first cotton spinning mill, powered by the Blackstone River. Slater Mill inspired other such water-powered mills in the valley and then across New England.
The rise of such mills began to transform the U.S. from an agrarian society to an industrial one, and eventually drew workers from all over the world.
There are a number of sites throughout the region associated with the corridor, including Slater Mill facilities themselves.
In 2014 the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park was established. It will include a number of sites found in the corridor.

Rainy Day in Rhode Island - Roger Williams National Memorial, Providence, Fort Adams
On our way up to New Hampshire for a wedding we spent the day in Rhode Island exploring the area. We spent most of our time in Providence, Rhode Island. We explored Roger Williams National Memorial.
After that we explored the downtown area of Providence and walked around Brown University Campus for a little bit.
We had lunch at Iggy's Doughboys And Chowder House in Warwick. This place is amazing and if you are in the area you need to check it out.
After lunch we went over to Fort Adams National Historical Landmark. We didn't go inside since we were running low on time for the day.
We got a quick peak at the Castle Hill Lighthouse. And then we ended our day at Slater Park in Pawtucket.

Exploring Inside Apex in Pawtucket, RI
In 1929 a company by the name of Apex Tire was founded. Years later it would move to Pawtucket and take direction towards a department store, selling appliances, clothes, sporting goods, and much more. All housed under this unique pyramid shaped building that would become a Pawtucket staple that we’ve come to know and love today!
That was then, this is now... Apex while it still stands, is not the giant it once was, as one of the three (Swansea, and Warwick.) stores are long since gone.
I’ve tried to find videos of Apex on YouTube but not much has been found. So I wish to take you on a journey where we go inside and take a quick tour through what remains of the Pawtucket Apex building.

Providence, Rhode Island
Providence is the capital and most populous city in Rhode Island. Founded in 1636, it is one of the oldest cities in the United States. It is located in Providence County, and is the third-largest city in the New England region after Boston and Worcester. Providence has a city population of 182,911 and is part of the 37th-largest metropolitan population in the country, with an estimated population of 1,600,856, exceeding that of Rhode Island by about 60%, as it extends into southern Massachusetts. This can be considered in turn to be part of the Greater Boston commuting area, which contains 7.6 million people. The city is situated at the mouth of the Providence River, at the head of Narragansett Bay.
Providence was founded by Roger Williams, a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He named the area in honor of God's merciful Providence, which he believed was responsible for revealing such a haven for him and his followers to settle. After being one of the first cities in the country to industrialize, Providence became noted for its jewelry and silverware industry. Today, the city of Providence is home to eight hospitals and seven institutions of higher learning, which has shifted the city's economy into service industries, though it still retains significant manufacturing activity.

Along the Blackstone Episode 12: Mill Life
Were the mill owners of the Blackstone Valley the harsh, penny-pinching ogres we associate with a Charles Dickens novel or were they benevolent father-figures who genuinely cared about the welfare of their workers? The truth probably lies somewhere in between. As the industrial age swept across America, the impact on the workers and their communities were profound.Along the Blackstone Episode #12 - Mill Life will take a look at the Rumford Chemical Company, Village of Rumford, East Providence, RI and the Draper Manufacturing Co. of Hopedale, MA as we examine workers and mill owners.Professor Scott Molloy, labor historian at the University of Rhode Island, will put everything into perspective for us
