In 1793, the firm of Almy, Brown, and Slater hired local artisans and laborers to construct a wooden structure suitable for the manufacture of cotton thread. The result was a 43′ x 29′ two-story mill, powered by water flowing from the Blackstone River. Here Samuel Slater’s machines produced the first cotton thread in August of 1793. Slater Mill was the first successful water-powered cotton-spinning factory in America. Because of its success, numerous mills were developed in nearby areas that copied its style and management protocols, including the construction of “mill villages,” and the employment of entire families (men, women and children) as mill operatives. This became known as the “Rhode Island System” of manufacturing.

Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park - Pawtucket, Rhode Island
The Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor follows the Blackstone River Valley from Worchester, Massachusetts to Providence, Rhode Island. America's Industrial Revolution was born here with the creation of Slater Mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the country's first cotton spinning mill, powered by the Blackstone River. Slater Mill inspired other such water-powered mills in the valley and then across New England.
The rise of such mills began to transform the U.S. from an agrarian society to an industrial one, and eventually drew workers from all over the world.
There are a number of sites throughout the region associated with the corridor, including Slater Mill facilities themselves.
In 2014 the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park was established. It will include a number of sites found in the corridor.

Mill Villages

Providence, Rhode Island
Providence is the capital and most populous city in Rhode Island. Founded in 1636, it is one of the oldest cities in the United States. It is located in Providence County, and is the third-largest city in the New England region after Boston and Worcester. Providence has a city population of 182,911 and is part of the 37th-largest metropolitan population in the country, with an estimated population of 1,600,856, exceeding that of Rhode Island by about 60%, as it extends into southern Massachusetts. This can be considered in turn to be part of the Greater Boston commuting area, which contains 7.6 million people. The city is situated at the mouth of the Providence River, at the head of Narragansett Bay.
Providence was founded by Roger Williams, a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He named the area in honor of God's merciful Providence, which he believed was responsible for revealing such a haven for him and his followers to settle. After being one of the first cities in the country to industrialize, Providence became noted for its jewelry and silverware industry. Today, the city of Providence is home to eight hospitals and seven institutions of higher learning, which has shifted the city's economy into service industries, though it still retains significant manufacturing activity.

Rhode Island has a proud tradition of independence and a number of historic firsts. The smallest state in the union is one of America’s precious gems and a microcosm of New England. The first armed conflict with the British took place in Warwick, Rhode Island with the burning of the Gaspee, and the Industrial Revolution has its origins at Slater Mill. Preservation of history in the form of 18th century architecture is a major concern in Newport. Twentieth century mansions line the bluff in the Bellevue District including Astors Beechwood Speakeasy, which brings to life the past through entertainment, music and acting. Visitors to Rose Island can step back in time by staying at a lighthouse, in the process learning about stewardship and the responsibilities of being a light keeper. Providence, the state’s capital, has gone through a major transformation in the last decade. The city has become revitalized through a combination of development and civic pride. Barnaby Evans’ WateFire Providence is a moving work of art and a symbol of the city’s transformation. Providence also supports a tasty tradition of culinary excellence nurtured by institutes such as Johnson and Wales University and the Culinary Archives & Museum. The Federal Hill district known as “Little Italy” is famous for its restaurants, boutiques and gourmet food shops. A glimpse into the world of jewelry manufacturing shows the origins of some of the local wealth that was used to create some of the beautifully preserved architecture on Benefit Street. Outside of the capital, small villages and businesses have changed little over time, including historic Coggleshall Farm and Kenyons Grist Mill. Block Island draws thousands of summer residents each year who come to experience the pace of island life and its beaches, boating and fishing. Rhode Island might be small in size but it is a state rich in history, culture and color.
