Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area - Overview
Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area's 48,438 acres provide peace and solitude for those who visit the unique scenic and geologic features and extraordinary cultural resources. Surroundings can vary from lowland dry lake beds to volcanic rock peaks reaching more than 5,000 feet.
The centerpiece of the area is the Sloan Canyon Petroglyph Site, one of the most significant cultural resources in Southern Nevada. Archeologists believe the more than 300 rock art panels with 1,700 individual design elements were created by native cultures from the Archaic to to historic era.
The West offers some of the most remarkable landscapes found on BLM managed public lands. Many of these places have received special recognition and protection through congressional or presidential conservation designations. National Conservation Areas are designated by Congress to conserve, protect, enhance and manage public land areas for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations. Sloan Canyon was designated as a National Conservation Area in 2002 and responsible use of the area is encouraged.

Suggest doing this hike during cooler months only. It was 77 degrees the day of our adventure and this canyon was HOT!

Sloan Canyon Petroglyphs, a trip 10,000 years into the past.
9/13/14 - In the distance of my backyard is a mountain range known as Sloan Canyon. I did not know until about 6 months ago when I was looking to see what trails lead there that there is an estimated 1,700 ancient petroglyphs made by the native peoples between 8,000 B.C. in the Archaic period all the way up to 1,000 BC in the Historic Period. So today I trekked out there to get a look at them. I didn’t know what to expect or where exactly they were, in fact I failed to find the trail a few weeks back in an earlier attempt. Today I found the trail and was I glad I went, the canyon was more than I had expected and the view was spectacular, that alone was worth the trip. As I headed back I stumbled across the petroglyphs, for an hour I stepped back in time, these are some of the over 300 images I took while there. It’s amazing to me this dead volcano which stands in plain sight in the distance to many who live in the area hides an ancient treasure few today know exist.
NOTE TO TRAVELERS: If you are in the area and plan to make the journey my recommendation drive a truck, bring a 3 liter camel-pack filled with water and be sure to pack some energy food. If you have a DSLR camera, it’s a good idea to have a protective camera bag for times you need to traverse rocks. You should wear hardened hiking shoes; also wear the highest sun block possible along with a hat protecting your head and neck from the sun. Apply cortisone beforehand; you’ll be glad you did. Note cell service cuts in and out depending where you are at, take care as you travel.
A SPECIAL NOTE: It should go without saying, do not touch the petroglyphs, they are 3,000 to 10,000 years old. Unfortunately it’s been reported some petroglyphs in the area were vandalized, thankfully I did not see those on my trip. I did see some far more recent glyphs created by people who ventured there; it took away from the majestic experience and honestly made me sad to see it.

Meltzer hikes on Black Friday - McCullough Hills Trail Hike
The McCullough Hills Trail is a long, but generally gentle hike in the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area that runs between the Anthem Hills Trailhead and the McCullough Hills Trailhead. The trail can be hiked in either direction, but here it is described west to east. As such, the trail starts climbing gradually through rolling hills sparsely covered with creosote bush and white bursage. By the time the trail starts descending, the vegetation fairly robust and diverse, more typical of Mojave Desert Scrub vegetation, and the geology is more striking. Views from along the trail, and especially from the two main view points, are grand and sweeping.
RED ROCK CANYON, NEVADA - An easy trip from Las Vegas
Something that completely took us by surprise while visiting Las Vegas is the plethora of opportunities to visit scenic areas just outside of the city. Nestled just a short drive away from Las Vegas strip is the imposing Red Rock Canyon. To visit we partnered with Pink Jeep Tours who whisked us to numerous different vantage points where we had the opportunity to hike, walk and climb certain parts of the National Park. It's definitely an experience I'd recommend to others and it left me feeling nostalgic because the scenery and imposing landscapes are similar to what I experienced backpacking in Northern Argentina five years ago.

Visiting Red Rock Canyon - day trip from Las Vegas Travel Video Script:
On our second day in Las Vegas we decided to escape the city and enjoy a bit of the natural scenery. We joined the Pink Jeep Tour for an afternoon exploring Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Located about a half hour drive outside of the city this is an easy day trip filled with rugged desert landscapes. We spent a few hours driving through the park and also doing a bit of hiking along the way. Here are some of the highlights.
Alright, it's time to climb this bad boy. Okay, show us your climbing skills. Scramble up that mountain. Just like an old man.
So this over here is the Calico Ridge and the landscape reminds me a lot of Northern Argentina.
The toilet. Is the toilet occupied? Hmm. Huh?
Hello, there.
So we are coming to the end of this outing. We're just doing our last little hike through the park and soon we'll be back in Las Vegas. But how did you enjoy it? It's been awesome. It is so nice. I didn't realize that there was so many scenic areas just outside of Las Vegas. And the best part is that I am building up an appetite for an enormous steak. Or sushi? No, steak.
