Mt Yokote, Shiga Kogen, Yamanouchi, Japan
In Yamanouchi we stayed in the Ryokan Biyu No Yado. While there we bumped into the Front Desk Manager for the sister hotel, Shiga Palace Hotel, Zen.
We'd only planned to visit the Snow Monkeys in Shibu Onsen but as there was some late-season snow, Zen suggested we visit Mt Yokote. It was a great suggestion and a super excuse to fly my Mavic Pro.
We caught a ski-lift up, had lots of crumpets at the Crumpet Cafe(!) and caught a snowmobile down. The unexpected surprise of our trip...

Episode 35 - Japan / Onomichi, Hiroshima & Yudanaka
JAPAN: ONOMICHI, HIROSHIMA & NAGANO
Our last days in Japan! After a few more visits to the Kyoto temples close to the train station, we left Kyoto for Onomichi by train. Daniel had read a lot of nice things about this town located 280km on the Japanese sea coast. A lot of small islands are connected by bridges and ferries to the main island and bicycle ways have been specifically set for cyclists to ride from one island to the other. And those who know Daniel, will now understand why we decided to stop in Onomichi! Eiji who had never done this part of Japan, joined us in Onomichi by car.
We met in the afternoon at the guest house and went for a walk before sunset. We climbed the numerous stairs of this sloppy city before heading to an excellent sushi & sashimi restaurant in the centre of town.
Early morning we left for the harbour to rent our bicycle and start our tour. Daniel and Eiji went for regular ones but Magali wanted to try an e-bike. Unfortunately larger bicycles equipped with electric assistance were all booked so she ended up with one with small wheels, never mind she took it. We then embarked for a quick sea crossing on one of the ferries to reach the first island. The weather was rather cloudy and windy but cycling between the mandarins fields and the Japanese sea was very interesting and nice.
We stopped many times on our way to take pictures and shot the scenery. We bought mandarins directly from the farmer! After crossing 3 bridges and a stop in a very local restaurant to have sashimi octopus which comes directly from the area, we took a boat to come back to our initial starting point. It was an excellent day and we finished it beautifully going to a public bath a few km away, to relax and have dinner on-site.
The next day we left for Hiroshima in the morning and met our host at 88hiroshima guest house. After check-in we left to visit the city centre and the monuments dedicated to the Bomb-A events. It was very informative and also very sad to understand all the suffering the people from Hiroshima endured in 1945 and many years later with the side effects of the radiations. A lot of survivors can be found in the Memorial Park and around the Museum to give their testimony.
We chose to come to Hiroshima to also visit the Miyajima island and its famous Torii. You probably already seen a view of this majestic red door and its picture reflecting in the water. We were actually impressed to find out that there is a lot to do and to see on this island. It is full of temples and pagodas and has of course a main shrine but it is also a good hiking location. We didn’t hike to the top but did take the ropeway all the way up and came down by foot (about 1,5h). The view from the very top of Mt. Misen is very rewarding with a 360 degrees view of the sea, the forests and the sacred sites. We must say we loved Miyajima a lot!
WE SPECIFICALLY ENJOY
The sushis! We became sushi and sashimi addicts to the max! We of course had them before in Switzerland and other places but sushi and sashimi in Japan is a totally different story. Our preferences went to the local salmon, the squid, the octopus and the red snapper. Nigiri sushi were also excellent with a specific note to the Japanese macquerel!
Our brief visit to the Snow Monkey Park in Jigokudani, 45min. North of Nagano. These little creatures are so cute in their hot spring, we think the images speak for themselves!
ACCOMMODATIONS
Hiroshima: we loved staying at the 88 Hiroshima guest house, a traditional Japanese home with a few rooms, a great living room and a kitchen to share with other guests. The place is spotless, peaceful and zen. It is located only 20min. ride by bus from the city centre (nr 29). There is a lot of information on what to do and what to see at the guest house. Kengo, the owner was a backpacker once and he knows the exact the travellers needs. We had a very good rest at your home, thank you again for your warm welcome, we wish you all the best and hope to meet you again in a near future!
Yudanaka/Yamanouchi: Zen Hostel, a lovely renovated old ryokan very close to the train station. Tatami rooms and dormitories are available as well as a nice cafe/lounge.
RESTAURANTS
Onomichi: Hanaakari, one of the best sashimi we ever tried.
Onomichi: SpA 尾道平原温泉 ぽっぽの湯, the restaurant is part of a private SpA with a lot of facilities. The SpA is very popular and it is nice to have dinner in a typical Japanese uniform/suit right after a relaxed bath. The food was excellent and reasonably price. We could taste the Yamakake Donburi once again (dish of red tuna and sticky mountain yam that we firstly discovered in one of the Onsen during our first days in Japan).

Nagano (長野市 Nagano-shi?), the capital city of Nagano Prefecture, is located in the northern part of the prefecture near the confluence of the Chikuma and the Sai rivers, on the main Japanese island of Honshū.
As of April 1, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 387,146 and a population density of 460 persons per km². The total area is 834.85 km².Nagano is most famous for Zenkō-ji, a 7th-century Buddhist temple that overlooks the city. A million tourists visit Nagano annually. Nagano was originally a town in Kamiminochi District built around the hilltop temple that is the largest wooden building in eastern Japan, but the city now encompasses locations that were within Sarashina, Hanishina, and Kamitakai districts. The city is located within Minuchi (水内郡), Takai (高井), Sarashina (更級郡), and Hanishina (埴科郡) Districts in the ancient Shinano Province. Zenkō-ji relocated from the current city of Iida (642). Afterwards, the town of Monzen became one of the motel towns of Hokkoku Kaidō.[clarification needed] The Battles of Kawanakajima were fought there including the fight between Takeda Shingen (武田信玄) and Uesugi Kenshin (上杉謙信). In 1742 (Inu-no-Mansui (戌の満水 or 千曲川大洪水), the water level reached 6.4 metres (21 ft)) at Akanuma (near the border with the former town of Toyono.) Due to Zenko-ji earthquake (May 8, 1847), nearly 10,000 people died. Nagano gained city status in 1897. The Matsushiro Underground Imperial Headquarters (松代大本営) was started in 1944, but was cancelled in 1945 due to the end of war. The city hosted the biggest mergers of the Showa Era I in 1954. In 1959, due to the flooding of Chikuma River, 71 people died or were missing and 20,000 homes were flooded. The biggest mergers of the Showa Era II occurred there in 1966. The Matsushiro Earthquake (松代群発地震) was here. Due to landslides (地附山地すべり災害) in 1985, 27 people died and 60 homes were destroyed or badly damaged. The city hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics and the Paralympics. In 1999, Nagano became a core city. Due to the mergers in the Heisei Era, the city absorbed the municipalities of Toyono, and the village of Togakushi, and Kinasa (from Kamiminochi District), and the village of Ōoka (from Sarashina District). Nagano hosted the 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games. On April 1, 1897 the city was founded. It became the first city founded in Nagano Prefecture and the 43rd city in Japan). On October 16, 1966, the current and the second city of Nagano was founded by merging with 8 municipalities, including the original city. On January 1, 2005 the city absorbed municipalities from Kamiminochi District (Toyono, Togakushi, and Kinasa) and Sarashina District (Ooka). On January 1, 2010 Nagano absorbed the town of Shinshūshinmachi and the village of Nakajō from Kamiminochi District.[3]The historic site of the Battles of Kawanakajima was converted into parkland, with a municipal museum of the history of the Zenkoji plain.
Matsushiro, the former castle town of the Sanada clan, is located in the southern part of the city. The town retains an historic atmosphere, preserving many samurai residences, temples, and gardens of the feudal period, including the remains of the castle and mansion of feudal Lord Sanada Jumangoku.
Sporting venues built for the Winter Olympics include the M-Wave speed-skating arena (with the world's largest wooden suspension roof), Big Hat arena, and the Aqua Wing Arena.
North of the city is the village of Iizuna. A popular destination in both summer and winter, it includes a ski resort, campsite, onsen, 10 ponds and a mountain slide ride.
Northeast of the city is Japan's largest ski resort, Shiga Kogen,[6] with the nearby Jigokudani Monkey Park,[7] famous for the wild Japanese macaque often found bathing in its hot springs.
South of the downtown core, in Shinano, Mt. Chausu hosts the Nagano Chausuyama Zoo, an outdoor dinosaur park, botanical garden
The city's main railway hub, Nagano Station, and the smaller Shinonoi Station, were expanded for the Olympics. The Nagano Shinkansen opened in 1997, connecting Nagano to Takasaki, Gunma. Nagano Station also serves the Shinano Railway Line, Shin'etsu Main Line, and Iiyama Line. The JR Chūō Main Line connects Nagano to the major city of Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture.
The Nagano Electric Railway also runs the Nagano Line to major sites around the city and its suburbs.
The city is connected by rail south to Matsumoto via the Shinonoi Line, which terminates at Shinonoi Station.
