Sofukuji Temple, Nagasaki - 崇福寺●長崎市 - Japan As It Truly Is
Sofukuji temple is often overlooked in the stampede for Peace Park and Glover Garden, but really shouldn't be. It looks a bit weathered because it is - a 1629 Ming Dynasty Zen temple and one of the finest examples of architecture from its period - even in China there are few surviving places that surpass it. Its existence testifies to the presence and influence of the Chinese residents in Nagasaki. It's closest to the Shokaku-ji or Shianbashi streetcar stops.

Sofukuji Temple. Nagasaki. Backpacking Japan
Walking around the Sofukuji Temple in Nagasaki.
Sofukuji Temple (崇福寺, Sōfukuji) is a temple in Nagasaki belonging to the Obaku school of Zen Buddhism. Originally built in 1629 for Nagasaki's Chinese residents, the temple is constructed in a Chinese architectural style and feels somewhat different to other temples in Japan.
Sofukuji is built along the slope of a hill. At the bottom stands the temple's two-stories tall entrance gate, Ryugumon (lit. Gate of the Dragon Palace). Like the rest of the temple, it is painted bright red. The gate was originally built in 1673, but was destroyed several times by fire and storms before the most recent reconstruction was completed in 1849.
Located further up the hillside, the temple's inner grounds contain several halls and a number of impressive artifacts such as statues and a temple bell that dates to 1647. The Buddha Hall was designed and cut in China before the pieces were shipped to Nagasaki and erected here in 1646. It remains one of the oldest buildings in the city. There are multiple English descriptions around the inner grounds for visitors to peruse while exploring this atmospheric area.

Nagasaki - Sofukuji Temple, 26 Martyrs of Japan statues and Meganebashi
Day 15 - Sofukuji Temple, and Meganebashi
After the Peace Park, we decided to visit some of the temples which Nagasaki is famous for. Unfortunately we were running behind time, so Sofukuji Temple was the only one we managed to see before closing time. The temple itself had a strong chinese influence, as with many others in Nagasaki. The graves at the back however was the most memorial part of Nagasaki. I was not sure if it was because of the gloomy weather, but there was a mysterious atmosphere when walking among the grave stones.
After visiting the temple, we wanted to go to the JR Nagasaki station to have dinner. While there, we decided to make a quick detour to the 26 Martyrs of Japan statue to have a look. The nearby church was the only church we visited in the whole trip to Japan.
When we returned to our accommodation, we did our laundry at a nearby store. We decided to kill some time by going to the nearby Meganebashi bridge (literally Spectacles Bridge). It is given that nickname as the reflection of the bridge in the water makes it look like Spectacles...I'll leave your imagine to run wild on this.

Dejima Island Nagasaki: Japan's Historical Sites - 長崎市出島 - Japan As It Truly Is
This is a more recently recreated museum of Dejima, the sequestered Dutch establishment during Japan's isolationist era, built from the remaining plans that showed what existed. There are nothing but a few stones from the original foundation which you can see through a transparent part of the floor, but it's still great to get an idea of what existed in this period of Japanese history.
About 20 Dutch inhabited Dejima from the 1630's, and introduced Japan to European and Asian goods and knowledge. They were strictly monitored and could only rarely leave the island a few times per year under guard. Over time they introduced Japan to knowledge (Rangaku; 蘭學), new maps, globes, medicine, deer hides, badminton, billiards, beer, coffee, chocolate, cabbage, clocks, tomatoes, a piano, and later, photography, as well as regular trade in silk, cotton, and sugar. They also purchased Japanese rice, lacquer ware, porcelain, copper, and silver.

Koshibyo, Nagasaki Confucian Temple - 長崎市の孔子廟 - Japan As It Truly Is
Koshibyo is a gem that's sadly neglected and overlooked by so many tourists and guidebooks on Nagasaki, it's really a tragedy.
Koshibyo is the only Confuscian shrine made by Chinese outside of China, and the land it's on, like embassies and consulates, is considered Chinese territory. It was established in 1893, and behind it you can see the Historical Museum of China. It's located very close to the Ouratenshudo-shita streetcar station、and is a must-see sight.

Isuien Garden, Nara ✿ 奈良市 依水園 ✿ Japan As It Truly Is
Just a stone's throw from the Nara Great Buddha, Isuien is a gem ready for discovery. Come see what the tourist hordes miss.
The land was once a sub-temple of the Kofukuji, and from 1670 was used as a home of a wealthy tanner. The eastern garden (seen first) is the oldest, and the western garden with the Nandaimon Gate and Nara hills in the background, was created in 1899. Nearby is also the Yoshikien Garden, which is also worth seeing.
Isuien has a rather pricey entrance fee of 900 yen, but Yoshikien is free for foreign tourists, so if you see both Japanese gardens, it does all balance out.
The garden is open 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM (last entry 4 PM).
Open daily in April, May, October & November, otherwise closed on Tuesdays. If Tuesday is a national holiday, then closed on Wednesday.

2018秋・黒羽雲厳寺・芭蕉の碑のある古刹 Unganji Temple

Prestaka Japan Trip '18 - Part 1
This video is part of our Japan trip vlog, which was taken in late June to early July 2018.
We flew from Bali to Osaka, and spent 2 nights there. We loved Dotonbori and the surroundings of the city. Our favorite place was Pablo Cheese! We also found a small sushi resto at Shinshaibashi, and a nice grilled resto at Dotonbori.
We've been travelling overseas for a couple of times, but this trip to Japan made us a bit nervous. Lost in translation was the main reason. We did not use any travel agent or guided tour. This is Internet era, so Google helped us a lot!! Thus, make sure to buy tourist data card (or rent wifi router, if you want to carry extra gadget).
