Son Doong Cave is in the heart of the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park in the Quang Binh province of Central Vietnam. Only recently explored in 2009-2010 by the British Cave Research Association, the cave has only been open to the public since 2013.
Less people have seen the inside of Hang Son Doong than have stood on the summit of Mount Everest. Join us on this otherworldly expedition and become one of the lucky few who have had the life changing experience of exploring the world’s largest cave.
Imagine trekking straight into the depths of the world’s largest cave on an expedition unlike any other. A cave so massive that a 747 could fly through its largest cavern. A space so mesmerising that it forces you to question whether you are still on this planet at all. Foreign landscapes found nowhere else, enormous stalagmites rising from the ground and statuesque stalactites hanging from the ceiling like an alien species. Jungles emerge from inside the cave itself, a scene so surreal that you have to see it to believe it. Misty clouds envelop the whole scene, a result of the cave’s own localised weather system. Passages adorned with ancient fossils offer evidence of the millions of years that have passed on this Earth.
As you approach the jungle just outside the entrance, the rush of cool wind that cascades out brings to life everything inside of you. Hazy, cold and exhilarating, it is apparent that there’s something magical waiting just beyond the opening to the cave.

Huge caves in Vietnam! Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park Vietnam | Vlog 27
Phong Nha cave in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, is one of the largest limestone caves in Vietnam.
Today I visited Phong Nha and Tien Son caves. Originally I wanted to visit Hang Son Doong (the largest cave in the world), although it is also found in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, it's not open to the public and is still very difficult and expensive to visit. So we settled for two popular caves that are accessed by boat, which gave me a chance to see some interesting sites along the river.
Both of these caves are situated in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site approximately 500km south of Hanoi.
To get to the caves you need to hire a boat, which is a set cost of 250,000 VND; however this cost can be split by up to 12 people. So I managed to get a group of 12 together, making the cost of the boat trip only 21,000 each. The ticket for both caves cost around 120,000 VND.
Another cave we visited on a separate occasion was the dark cave. This was a lot of fun and I would highly recommend it. I didn't vlog in that cave as I still don't have a waterproof camera!
About me:
My name is Ryan Tooes and I quit my job so I could travel the world seeking out adventure. Now I have decided to become a travel vlogger to hopefully inspire others to do the same. My plan is to travel the world continuously and work online to fund my travels. Living the dream so far!
If you have been considering your own epic journey then my only advice it just do it! Don't wait around for the right time, there'll never be a perfect time. You just have to quit your job, book your first flight and go!

Son Doong cave Vietnam (Discovery Son Doong cave)
Son Doong cave Vietnam
Discovery Son Doong cave Vietnam
Son Doong cave(Vietnamese: Hang Son Doong) is world's largest cave, located in Quang Binh province, Vietnam. It is found by a local man named Ho Khanh in 1991 and was recently discovered in 2009 by British cavers, led by Howard Limbert. The name Son Doong cave means mountain river cave, It was created 2-5 million years ago by river water eroding away the limestone underneath the mountain Where the limestone was weak, the ceiling collapsed creating huge skylights...
Son Doong cave is more than 200 meters wide, 150 meters high, and approx 9 kilometers long, with caverns big enough to fit an entire city street inside them, twice as large as Deer Cave in Malaysia (currently considered the world's largest with 90 meters wide, 100 meters high and 2 kilometers long). Son Doong cave was classified as the largest cave in the world by BCRA (British Cave Research Association) and selected as one of the most beautiful in the globe by the BBC news.
Son Doong cave is hidden in rugged Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh province near the border with Laos, the cave is part of a network of 150 or so caves, many still not surveyed, in the Annamite Mountains. It is very difficult to travers. During the first expedition, the team explored two and a half miles of Son Doong cave before a 200-foot wall of muddy calcite stopped them. They named it the Great Wall of Vietnam. Above it they could make out an open space and traces of light, but they had no idea what lay on the other side. A year later, they have returned—seven hard-core British cavers, a few scientists, and a crew of porters - to climb the wall, if they can, measure the passage, and push on, if possible, all the way to the end of the cave...

Check out our independent travel guide to Phong Nha Ke Bang here -
Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park is one of my favourite places in Vietnam. It’s home to some of the world’s most spectacular caves, stunning karst mountain landscapes, dense forest and friendly picturesque villages. Best of all, you can visit most places by bicycle or on foot. It’s a special mix for travellers wanting a uniquely Vietnam experience in a natural setting.
Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park // Vietnam
Our next stop is Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I only spent one night and one day there, but I fell in love with the place the moment I saw the silhouette of mountains in the night sky.
This national park is home to 300 caves and grottoes, and protects an ecosystem of limestone forest. While the area still has unexploded land mines, it's still a destination for tourists and backpackers. The most popular thing to do here is go on tours of a few of the caves. These geological wonders are stunning! I went to the most frequented one, the Phong Nha cave.
Cave admission is 150,000 dong, while the boat to get there is 360,000 dong for 14 people. If you are by yourself, wait at the ticket counter until a large group approaches and ask if you can join them.

Son Doong Cave Vietnam
Son Doong cave (in Vietnamese: Hang Sơn Đoòng, meaning Mountain River Cave) is a cave in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, Vietnam. The cave is located near the Laos-Vietnam border ( 17°27'25.88N 106°17'15.36E). It has a large fast-flowing underground river inside.
The cave was found by a local man named Hồ-Khanh in 1991. The local jungle men were afraid of the cave for the whistling sound it makes from the underground river. However, not until 2009 was it made known to the public when a group of British scientists from the British Cave Research Association, led by Howard and Deb Limbert, conducted a survey in Phong Nha-Ke Bang from April 10-14, 2009.

About this diving expedition: A team of British divers have dived the terminal sump of Hang Son Doong with support from Oxalis. In extremely challenging conditions, the sump was dived to a depth of -77m making it the deepest cave dive in Vietnam. The cave was also extended by a further 60m despite the difficulties of route finding in very poor visibility and the significant depths.
About the diving team: Oxalis Adventure and the British Cave Research Association (BCRA) have collaborated with the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park Management Board to invite the cave diving experts to join in this exclusive expedition. All the invitees belong to the top 50 greatest cave diving experts in the world. The diving exploration team includes: Team Leader: Mr. Martin Holroyd - BCRA specialist, 03 members who have contributed to the rescue of the Wild Boar football team in Tham Luang, Chiang Rai, Thailand in 2018: Mr. Rick Stanton, Mr. Jason Mallinson and Mr. Chris Jewell. The team will also be accompanied by Ms. Laura Jewell, the diving equipment coordinator for this expedition.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Vietnam's Stunning Limestone Zone
Phong Nha-Ke Bang is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site in north-central Vietnam, about 500 km south of the nation's capital, Hanoi. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is situated in a limestone zone of 2,000 km2 in Vietnamese territory and borders another limestone zone of 2,000 km2 of Hin Namno in Laotian territory.
The park was created to protect one of the world's two largest karst regions with 300 caves and grottoes and also protects the ecosystem of limestone forest of the Annamite Range region in north central coast of Vietnam. The park derives it name from Phong Nha cave, the most beautiful of all, containing many fascinating rock formations, and Ke Bang forest.
The plateau on which the park is situated is probably one of the finest and most distinctive examples of a complex karst landform in Southeast Asia. This national park was listed in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in 2003 for its geological values. In April 2009, the world's largest cave Son Doong Cave, was discovered by a team of British cave explorers.
Tourist activities in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park are organized by local travel agencies and vary in form. Tour for expedition of caves and grottos in boats and with professional cave expedition means. Ecotourism, discovering the flora and fauna in this national park in the Ke Bang Forest. Mountain climbing, trekking: There are extreme sloping mountains here with a height of over 1,000 m, which is a real challenge for adventurous climbers.
