Cultural tour from Bishkek to Lake Son Kul, Kyrgyzstan
Following the trails of the Great Silk Road to the alpine summer pastures of Kyrgyz nomads at Son Kul Lake!
You will see the Burana Tower of Karakhanid’s epoch (now is UNESCO World Heritage site) and the Petroglyphs open air museum - the rock drawings left by Scythian’s tribe.
You will drive through Boom gorge and pass by Ortotokoy water reservoir to Kochkor village where a local family will welcome you with hot traditional meals made of the fresh ingredients raised at the local farm.
You will have the chance to try making Kyrgyz felt carpet together with Kyrgyz artisans. Then you will drive up to Son Kul lake located at the altitude of more than 3000 m above sea level which is still the most popular place for nomads to bring their herds for summer.
This is really an experience for those looking for wild, pristine! nature, and getting away from normal everyday life.
From Bishkek to Lake Son Kul - Bicycle Touring in Kyrgyzstan - The ONION Adventure
Vroni's friend Sarah and her partner Jonas (yes, a second one) came to Bishkek to cycle through Kyrgyzstan with us for 3 weeks. Climbing a steep pass got us into the heart of the country with spectacular landscape.

«Endangered Kyrgyzstan» series are not just a TV documentary, but a cry for help. This show is necessary for the amazing nature of Kyrgyzstan. There is a well-advertised travel motto that Kyrgyzstan is a land of pristine, unspoilt wilderness. Unfortunately, it is not. 90% of the country’s ecosystems were destroyed. Most of them – irrevocably.
These TV series tells people about the damaged ecosystems of major lakes and caves, heavy oil pollution of trans-boundary rivers, slow and painful death of the world’s largest nut-bearing forest.
The project's purpose is to open the eyes of citizens and civil servants of Kyrgyzstan and to shed light on the harsh reality. Problems covered in the show are of great importance not only for Kyrgyzstan but for the whole region and, subsequently, for the Asian continent.

Amazing places of Kyrgyzstan. Son Kul Lake at an altitude of 3000 meters
An unusual lake at an altitude of 3016 meters above sea level.
Surrounded on all sides by mountain ranges. The abundant herds attract predators. The area is inhabited by snow leopard, wolves and foxes. There are more than a dozen species of fish brought in artificially in the middle of the 20th century in Son-Kul Lake. More than 60 species of birds live on the shores. There are no trees growing near the lake. This unusual place attracts tourists from all over the world.

In central Tian Shan of Kyrgyzstan is Song-Kul (Son Kul) Lake at almost 10,000 ft altitude. We did a yurt stay overnight and rode horses near the lake. In Kyrgyz they call it Соңкөл. In Russia this is киргизия.

Son Kul is a mountain lake located in the mountains of Tien Shan at an altitude of 3016 m. The nature around the lake is wild and untouched. The most amazing thing is that you will not see trees around the lake, but you will find a lot of medicinal herbs and flowers. Here are the most beautiful sunsets and the starry sky, which will not leave anyone indifferent. Our yurt camp is located in one of the best places on the coast of the lake. The camp has comfortable conditions for rest. Our yurt camp operates annually from June to September. Here you will feel the real life of nomads and find out what the Kyrgyz hospitality is.

Hiking in Kyrgyzstan-Hiking in Song-Kol (Marking new trails part 1)
Hiking near Song-Kul lake in Kyrgyzstan still remains one of our most beautiful hike in Kyrgyzstan. In June we helped a local NGO called Discover Kyrgyzstan mark and map new trails around the lake of Song-Kul and the town of Ming-Kush in Kyrgyzstan. It was an unforgettable adventure that gave us the opportunity to see some remote pristine landscapes.
The first hike I helped mapping out for Discover Kyrgyzstan started on the northern shore of Song Kul Lake. This path has now been given the name The Shepherd's Way because it was a trail on which the ancient nomadic shepherds crossed the Uzbek Ashuu mountain pass (at an altitude of 3369 meters) with their cattle to reach the lake.
The trek itself was relatively easy but unfortunately, but we weren't so lucky with the weather! We were able to stay dry during the first hours of the trek but as soon as we wanted to cross the pass, we got stuck in a cloud of rain and mist. We couldn't see more than one meter ahead which made it quite dangerous. The path wasn't very visible and was partly covered in snow. It was so slippery that our horse fell (but luckily it didn't get hurt, these animals are so tough!). We made it across the mountain pass - soaking wet and a bit shaken - but safely thanks to our guide!

Lake Son Kul and our way to Osh - Bicycle Touring in Kyrgyzstan - The ONION Adventure
Together with our friend Sarah and Jonas we hiked to the amazing alpine lake Son Kul and trekked on horses to lake Kol'Ukok. After parting ways with them, we cycled from Kochkor to Naryn, Kazarman and to Osh eventually. Along the way we cycled on some rough roads and climbed a few steep passes, but the scenery was so worth it.

The oldest traditions of Kyrgyzstan - Eagle Hunting and Horseback trek to Song Kol lake
Hunting with Eagles and horseback riding are probably some of the oldest traditions of Kyrgyzstan.On this trip around Kyrgyzstan my brothers and I had the chance to see both.Follow our adventure as we traveled with one of the best travel companies in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Nomad and went to see the Eagle hunters of Kyrgyzstan and went on a horseback trek to Song Kol lake.

Lake Son-Kul, Kyrgyzstan
At an altitude of 3016 m a. s. l.; 29km long and 18km wide and a maximum depth of 13.2m — it is Kyrgyzstan's second largest lake. The average temperature in summer is about 11°C — but unlike Issyk Kul (Kyrgyzstan's largest lake) it does freeze over in the winter. It is situated on a treeless, high mountain plateau, and is surrounded by lush mountain meadows (jailoo). As such it is used by the shepherds of the Kochkor, Naryn and At Bashi regions for summer pastures for their flocks.
