Sopela, also known as Sopelana, is a town and municipality located in the province of Biscay, in the autonomous community of Basque Country, northern Spain. Sopelana is roughly 820 hectares in area, located in the comarca Mungialdea on the north east side of Bilbao and due east of the Nervión river estuary. In the municipality, other former towns like Larrabasterra are now merged to make Sopelana larger.
The area of Sopelana is situated among green hills and beaches. This makes Sopelana a very attractive suburb of Bilbao, with a short commute of 35 minutes on the metro. Sopelana has become a residential municipality well communicated with bigger municipalities and with Bilbao. Sopelana was at first an eminently turistic destination, where the properties and house owners only moved to spend summer holidays but Sopelana has turned into a residential town. At the moment, Sopelana is one of the village's with the highest per capita income of the state.
Sopela belongs to a region called Uribe that is composed by 15 municipalities that are: Arrieta, Bakio, Barrika, Gámiz-Fica, Gatika, Górliz, Laukiniz, Lemoniz, Maruri-Jatabe, Meñaka, Mungia, Plencia, Sopelana and Urduliz. Sopelana borders with the Cantabrian sea in the north, what makes Sopelana have spectacular cliffs and beaches (Barinatxe, Arrietara, Atxabiribil and Meñakoz). The municipality of Barrika is located to the Northeast, Getxo to the Northwest, Urduliz to the Southeast and Berango to the Southwest.
Sopela is known for three beaches Atxabiribil, Barinatxe and Arrietara. They are rather exposed to the elements of the Bay of Biscay and have good conditions for surfers. A fourth beach, Meñakoz is of less appeal for sun worshippers and more for the surfer crowd due to the pebble bed ground. Sopela is frequently the host of regional surf competitions as conditions are adequate for surfing in its beaches. A less famous, but also internationally known event, is the yearly nude race on Barinatxe beach in the fall. Barinatxe is a clothing optional beach. Another special place in Sopela is a small creek called Ikatza known only by its citizens.
The town of Sopelana is connected to the main transport arteries with two metro stations on the Line 1 of Bilbao Metro and highways. Larrabasterra station is located to the far south of Sopela in Larrabasterra, while Sopela station (formerly Sopelana) is at the center of the municipality. Several bus routes also connect Sopela to Bilbao and nearby towns, like Barrika, Plentzia, Gorliz and Armintza. These buses are:

A3531: Sopelana - Munguía - Gatica.
A2166: Uribe Kosta - UPV/EHU
There is also a local bus service which connects the town centre with the beaches, it joins the following neighbourhoods: Larrabasterra / Arrietara / Beaches / Sopelmar / Ugeraga / Moreaga / Centre.
The patron saint of the town is San Pedro or Saint Peter and his feast days are the most representative ones. They are held at the end of the month of June and they last up to a week and a half. The big day is the 29th. The patroness of the neighbourhood of Larrabasterra is Virgen del Carmen and her feast days are held in mid-July. The big day is the 16th.

Sopelana is a very consistent beach break in the Basque Country. The beach has several breaks that spread the crowd really well. The best spot is on the left corner of the beach where perfect A-frames guarantee the fun of regular and goofy footers. Works better on high tide and is fairly protected from the wind.

Barinatxe (llamada coloquialmente La Salvaje) es una playa ubicada entre los municipios vascos de Sopelana y Guecho, en España. Tiene una longitud de 752 m Se encuentra al oeste de Arrietara, otra playa de similares dimensiones.
El nudismo está permitido y consolidado, practicándose generalmente en los laterales de la playa. Desde el año 1999 se celebra anualmente en los meses de verano la Carrera nudista de Sopelana – Trofeo Patxi Ros, una carrera nudista de participación gratuita y dividida en categorías por edad y sexo: masculina, femenina, veteranos (mayores de 40 años) e infantil (menores de 14). Entre las otras actividades que se llevan a cabo se encuentran el surf y el parapente.
Las amplias y tranquilas playas de Arrietara y Atxabiribil, en Sopela, comparten arena, aunque no hay delimitación entre la una y la otra. Protegidas por varios acantilados, ofrecen al visitante la posibilidad de realizar numerosas actividades, entre ellas el surf.
Arrietara es el epicentro del surf en esta zona, alberga importantes citas deportivas como el Mundial IBATOUR de Bodyboard o distintos campeonatos ASP. Cuenta con una media docena de clubes y tres escuelas. La playa ofrece varios picos tipo beach break, El Pasillo, una izquierda larga que rompe sobre arena y rocas que produce secciones muy verticales. Sope atrás, otra izquieda larga con un take off agresivo que funciona sólo en marea baja. Larrabasterra, un pico de izquierdas y derechas, con olas de gran calidad sobre todo en marea media y alta, la denominada El Surf... Todas estas olas funcionan con distintas mareas y swells. Esta playa está orientada al noroeste y recibe mucho mar.
Atxabiribil, también conocida como El Peñón, es una zona de olas de playa que rompen sobre rocas. Funciona con todas las mareas y hay olas izquierdas y derechas, siendo un tanto mejores estas últimas, aunque todo depende de la dirección del swell y los fondos de arena. Alberga importantes citas deportivas como la prueba Projunior del circuito europeo ASP.
Recoge todo tipo de swell y la frecuencia de olas es alta. Cerca se encuentra la ola El Sitio, un point break de izquierdas que en marea baja puede aguantar hasta 2 metros.

A whale, which beached itself at Sopela Beach in Spain
A crew kept working on Monday, Feb. 4, to drag a fin whale, which beached itself at Sopela Beach in Spain the day before. According to biologists, the adult male whale was sick and undernourished. The fin whale, which is the second largest species on Earth after the Blue Whale, was 16.70 meters long and weighed 30 tons. (VOA)
