South Dakota's First Children's Museum Now Open in Brookings
South Dakota's First Children's Museum Now Open in Brookings
By Jesse Batson
For hundreds of kids in Brookings, today was all about education, through a lot of fun. The learning didn't happen in school, but in the new South Dakota Children's Museum.
KDLT's Jesse Batson gives us a look at the place where learning equals fun.
Welcome to the SD Children's Museum, where imagination is as big as our skies, said the museum's Executive Director Suzanne Hegg.
It's the first and only of it's kind in the entire state. A museum just for kids. Where else can a grade schooler beat a SDSU Softball player in a chin up competition?
She wiped me out completely. We were going at it and then she, I looked over, and she was going double my speed. I was like 'There's no way I'm going to win,' said Pam Nicholson, member of the SDSU softball team.
The South Dakota Children's Museum started as an idea from one parent and, thanks to funding from the Larson family of Brookings, is now a reality.
It's been four years and it's been a lot of hard work. It's a very complicated project for all the designers and the contractors and they did a great job, so we're really happy with it, said Oscar Larson.
The museum isn't a place to stand around. The exhibits are made to be interactive.
We know that children learn naturally through play so we planned this museum very carefully to stimulate their curiousity and their ability to solve problems, said Hegg.
There are already a few favorites exhibits.
My favorite so far has been the grocery shopping. It was fun, said Allie Peters.
Probably the water section, said Mia Myers. You can play with all these water toys. It was fun.
The fun doesn't stop inside. This museum has an outside exhibit, something the executive director says most chldren's museums don't have.
We want them to climb, dance, play and just explore the world here, said Hegg.
The outside area will be used for ice skating during the winter months.
Here is the schedule for the South Dakota Children's Museum:
Mondays: Closed
Tuesday - Saturday: 10 AM to 5 PM
Sunday: Noon to 5 PM
September 12, 2010 5:21 PM

Celebrating 125 years of Agriculture in South Dakota
Gov. Dennis Daugaard is inviting communities to plan events to commemorate South Dakota’s 125th anniversary of statehood this year.
Local committees are encouraged to plan celebration events, promote local history and perform community improvement projects. Participating communities will be eligible for special commemorative highway signs and help with planning and promoting their local efforts.
During South Dakota’s Centennial of Statehood in 1989, towns held special events and raised money to restore old buildings, build or improve city parks, upgrade swimming pools and athletic fields, and rebuild local museums.

SD Art Museum: Carol Hepper
Brookings SD SDSU Campus South Dakota Art Museum: Carol Hepper- Inside the Between
Carol Hepper grew up on a ranch near McLaughlin, South Dakota and attended South Dakota State University. Following her graduation from SDSU, she moved to New York City where she has become very successful in the art world.
Hepper's sculptures are strongly influenced by her life in South Dakota. They are built from the traces of living things. Branches, animal skins and animal bones are brought together as if they were shelters.
The work is carefully crafted but retains irregularities of natural objects. It reveals a contemporary approach to three-dimensional abstraction and to the use of color in unexpected ways, at the same time shows us how art can re-infuse life into the surrounding environment.

Time: A South Dakota inmate art show in Aberdeen SD
Art is a manifestation of our humanity.
Art is not for art’s sake. Art is for humanity's sake.
Art is the legacy of humanity.
I am not like you. I am you and you are me and we are all in this together.
Doing unto others is doing unto ourselves.
The creation and sharing of art is a way of realizing our shared humanity.
No one is all bad or all good. What we see is what we focus on at the exclusion of all else.
Maintaining one's humanity is key for inmates to be able to rejoin society as a functioning, productive member.
We invite you along with law enforcement, the courts, schools, community groups, churches, even reading groups to start conversations in your communities about using art to help maintain our humanity.
