2015 Honey Creek Scenic Area - Big South Fork Backpacking
Don't forget to watch in 1080p and Like, Share, and Subscribe if you enjoy the video!
Our first trip to this area was back in January this year. The area was covered with snow and ice, forcing us to bypass some of it. This trip let us revisit the area and capture some really beautiful scenery without being impeded by snow and ice!
Our goal this time around, was to explore some of the areas we could not get to earlier in the year. No real destination involved, just plain exploring and enjoying a peaceful camp away.
We met some, good like minded, people out there just enjoying what Honey Creek and Big South Fork have to offer.
This is one of the most challenging hikes within Big South Fork. When you hike this loop expect to encounter steep narrow trail sections, numerous creek crossings, slick boulders and confusing trail junctions. But earning the locations and views is so worth it.
I would recommend taking a weekend and explore this part of Big South Fork, you will not be disappointed. Just bring a good set of legs and patience! Get off the couch! Remember you're never too old to hike!
More information on Honey Creek Loop Trail can be found on our website at this location:

Backpacking Big South Fork in Winter with a Tarp: Hiking 4 Days, 3 Nights
Backpacking in Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Dates: November 21 - 24, 2015.
Distance to cover: 55 miles. Time to do it: 4 days, 3 nights. Weather: Nighttime temperatures to a low of 22 degrees. All with a tarp, not a tent (because that's how I roll, lol).
My plan was a long 55-mile loop through Big South Fork and Pickett State Park beginning at Bandy Creek Visitor's Center. I succeeded, although I spent a few tense hours lost in Pickett State Park, where my two guidebooks and two maps did not coincide with the trails that I could see. (Blazing notes: the John Muir Trail is easy to follow, even though it crosses and recrosses horse trails. Things are more difficult in Pickett State Park, where the trails and signage are not as well maintained. Even the turtle-shaped blazes for the Sheltowee Trace were only a little help, since more attention is being paid to the news southern terminus of the trail, rather than the older one that I was on. Get the most up-to-date trail information that you can find!)
The hike itself was great. The park's outstanding natural features kept me from every getting bored. I'll be returning to Big South Fork and Pickett State Park soon.
(Update: My follow-up video, in which I returned to the trail to find out how I got lost . . . )

Hiking at Big South Fork|Horne Lake Caves, Kentucky
Hiking at Big South Fork|Horne Lake Caves, Kentucky
Hiking is one of the most popular and rewarding activities within Big South Fork. A large trail system is designed to take you into the heart of the park. Big South Fork has developed a map depicting the trail system, broken into nine detailed maps of all trail uses. If you need something a little more planned out, try our trip itinerary page with some of the most popular routes already mapped out for you.
Within the trail system there are a full range of opportunities available, from a short easy hike along the Big South Fork River to long and strenuous multiple day hikes and backcountry camping. There is even a section of the John Muir National Recreation Trail that passes through the park.
The information presented on the Tennessee hiking trails and the Kentucky hiking trails, only scratches the surface of what is available in Big South Fork. As you plan your hiking adventure in the park, contact the staff at both visitor centers for complete and up-to-date information on these and other trails in the park. In addition, trail maps and guide books are available from Eastern National.
In an effort to make the trail system more user friendly for a wide variety of users at Big South Fork, the park has implemented a trailhead and trail marking system.

Shelly S.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ All that and trail apples too!
The road in is an adventure in itself while pulling a camper. The visitors center is directly across from the campground as well as stables. The campground is very well kept and clean, nice hookup areas and a pool. Now for the trails...make sure you have a full tank of gas if your driving to the trailheads. If you backpacking in the way is scenic and in many places challenging. With awesome rock formations to see and several historic markers along the way. Horseback riders abound, there are both co-use trails and hikers only. There is an original settlement that you can stay at which can only be reached on foot or horseback. They will feed you and bed you down in various modes of primitiveness for a price. Overall an excellent choice for a weekend or longer!

White Water Rafting Travel Guide - South Fork American River | California Travel Tips
California Travel Tips host Veronica Hill shares her White Water Rafting Travel Guide on the South Fork American River. Led by rafting guide Deryn Peck of , this white water river rafting trip follows the South Fork of the American River — one of the most popular runs for beginners and families.
White water rafting trips are popular in the spring (if you're looking for big surf), or in the late summer (if you're looking for gentler, warmer waters).
American River rafting is one of the most convenient whitewater river rafting trips because it's only an hour from Sacramento.
The American River is also one of the best white water rafting destinations in the nation, drawing more than 1 million visitors per year.
The American River white water rafting season runs from spring to fall, and is the perfect compliment to a California vacation.
Our OARS white water rafting class included a delicious barbecue lunch, followed by about three hours on the river.
For a whitewater river rafting vacation, OARS offers multiple-day whitewater rafting tours on several popular California rivers, including the Merced River, Tuolumne River near Yosemite and the Upper Klamath River near the Oregon border.
