The State(s) We're In: A New Age of Transatlantic Relations – Migration and Art
Deutsches Haus at NYU presents a conversation on Migration and Art among Silvia Fehrmann, Director of the DAAD's Artists-in-Berlin Programme; the artist Andy Graydon; the photographer Stefan Falke; Nathalie Anglès, the director of Residency Unlimited; and the journalist and writer Claudia Steinberg.
November 27, 2018
In the past two years, the issue of migration, borders, and walls has become ever more prevalent in the public discourse of both Europe and the United States. In the panel discussion Migration and Art, acclaimed purveyors of culture who have voluntarily relocated will examine whether art transcends cultural and national boundaries, and reflect on how bringing their own talents and ideas into a different cultural context and initially foreign space has shaped their own artistic practice and general outlook.
This discussion is part of The State(s) We're In: A New Age of Transatlantic Relations, a series of six talks presented by Deutsches Haus at NYU that addresses an array of important topics that are currently intensely debated in both Germany and the United States, and are of political and sociopolitical relevance in both countries: threats to democracy; economic inequality and populism; migration and art; civil society and political engagement; climate change and activism; and educational policy and academic freedom.
Nathalie Anglès is co- founder and Executive Director of Residency Unlimited (RU). From 2000-2008, she worked at Location One as the Director of the International Residency Program. Before moving to New York in 2000, Nathalie worked in Paris at the Union Centrale des Arts Decoratifs (UCAD), Ecole des Beaux Arts (ENSBA), and the American Center Sotheby’s (London). In 2008, Nathalie received the title of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters from the French government.
German photographer Stefan Falke lives in New York City and has published two books: “MOKO JUMBIES: The Dancing Spirits of Trinidad,” a photo essay about a stilt walking school in Trinidad, and “LA FRONTERA: Artists along the US – Mexican Border,” the result of an ongoing project for which he photographed over 200 artists who live and work on both sides of the 2000 miles long US-Mexico border. His work has been exhibited internationally in galleries, photo festivals, and museums.
Silvia Fehrmann is a literary scholar, translator and cultural manager. In January 2018, she took on the role of head of the DAAD’s Artists-in-Berlin Programme, one of the world’s most renowned scholarship programmes for artists working in the visual arts, literature, music and film. Fehrmann was formerly the deputy director of the Berlin-based Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), which is a venue for contemporary arts and a forum for the public discourse. She is a spokesperson of the Rat für die Künste Berlin, an elected commission representing the Berlin´s cultural practitioners.
Working in film and video, sound, performances, and installations, Andy Graydon tracks the wayward lives of forms in the world, from morphogenesis to translation to decay. Interested in natural and social ecologies, and the role of listening and the voice, Andy Graydon’s work engages structures of music such as scoring, improvisation, collective emergence, and community. Andy Graydon is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Maui, Hawai’i. His work has been presented internationally at the New Museum, Participant Inc, New York; Berlinische Galerie, Berlin; the Frye Art Museum, Seattle; Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, Mass.; Honolulu Museum of Art, Hawai’i; Wroclaw Media Arts Bienniale, Poland; and others. Andy Graydon lived and worked in Berlin from 2008 to 2014, and taught sound art and photography at NYU Berlin from 2012 to 2014.
Claudia Steinberg left Cologne for New York in 1980, originally planning to stay for a year. Her decision to remain in New York was greatly influenced by her friendships and work relationships with German writers and artists who had fled Nazi Germany. When the wall between East and West Germany fell, longstanding political beliefs were put into question. In the last decade, Claudia Steinberg has developed a keen interest in the US/Mexican border — as a journalist she grew fascinated with the complex and untamable town of Tijuana, which became the subject of several articles. She writes for taz, Die Zeit, Vogue, Tank Magazine and The Fabulist, among other publications.
The State(s) We're In: A New Age of Transatlantic Relations. Migration and Art is supported by the Transatlantic Program of the Federal Republic of Germany with funds from the European Recovery Program (ERP) of the Federal Ministry for Economy and Energy (BMWi). Additional support is provided by the DAAD.

The Highest-Ranking Woman in American History Shares Her Remarkable Story (2003)
The family emigrated from the United Kingdom on the SS America, departing Southampton on November 5, 1948, and arriving at Ellis Island in New York Harbor on November 11, 1948. The family initially settled in Great Neck on Long Island. Korbel applied for political asylum, arguing that as an opponent of Communism, he was under threat in Prague.[24] With the help of Philip Mosely, a professor of Russian at Columbia University in New York City, Korbel obtained a position on the staff of the political science department at the University of Denver in Colorado.[25] He became dean of the university's school of international relations – renamed the Josef Korbel School of International Studies in 2008 – and later taught future U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.[8]
Albright spent her teen years in Denver, and in 1955 graduated from the Kent Denver School in Cherry Hills Village, a suburb of Denver, where she founded the school's international relations club and was its first president.[26] She attended Wellesley College, in Wellesley, Massachusetts, on a full scholarship, majoring in political science, and graduated in 1959.[27] Her senior thesis was written on former Czechoslovakian Prime Minister Zdeněk Fierlinger.[28] She became a U.S. citizen in 1957, and joined the College Democrats of America.[29]
While home in Denver from Wellesley, Albright worked as an intern for The Denver Post, where she met Joseph Medill Patterson Albright, the nephew of Alicia Patterson, owner of Newsday and wife of philanthropist Harry Frank Guggenheim.[30] The couple were married in Wellesley in 1959, shortly after her graduation.[27] They lived first in Rolla, Missouri, while he served his military service at nearby Fort Leonard Wood. During this time, she worked at The Rolla Daily News.[31]
In January 1960, the couple moved to his hometown of Chicago, Illinois, where he worked at the Chicago Sun-Times as a journalist, and Albright worked as a picture editor for Encyclopædia Britannica.[32] The following year, Joseph Albright began work at Newsday in New York City, and the couple moved to Garden City on Long Island.[33] That year, she gave birth to twin daughters, Alice Patterson Albright and Anne Korbel Albright. The twins were born six weeks premature and required a long hospital stay, so as a distraction, Albright began Russian classes at Hofstra University in Village of Hempstead, New York.[33]
In 1962, the family moved to Georgetown, and Albright began studying international relations and continued studying Russian at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, a division of Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C..[34] However, in 1963 Alicia Patterson died, and the family returned to Long Island with the notion of Joseph taking over the family business.[35] Albright gave birth to another daughter, Katherine Medill Albright, in 1967, and continued her studies at Columbia University's Department of Public Law and Government[36] (later renamed as the political science department, which is located within the School of International and Public Affairs). She earned a certificate in Russian, a Master of Arts and a PhD, writing her Master's thesis on the Soviet diplomatic corps and her doctoral dissertation on the role of journalists in the Prague Spring of 1968.[37] She also took a graduate course given by Zbigniew Brzezinski, who later became her boss at the U.S. National Security Council.
The Shinnecock Tribe : Afro Native Americans
Black Indians, or Afro Native Americans, are people of mixed African-American and Native American heritage, who have strong ties to Native American culture. Many Indigenous peoples of the Eastern Woodlands, such as the Narragansett, Pequot, Lumbee and Cherokee, have a significant number of African ancestors. Only 5 percent of African Americans have at least 12.5% Native American ancestry (equivalent to one great-grandparent). For tribal member's, that may be a different story.

Long Beach: Queen Mary(Ship)
The RMS Queen Mary is a retired British ocean liner that sailed primarily on the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 for the Cunard Line – known as Cunard-White Star Line when the vessel entered service and built by John Brown & Company in Clydebank, Scotland. Queen Mary, along with RMS Queen Elizabeth, were built as part of Cunard's planned two-ship weekly express service between Southampton, Cherbourg and New York. The two ships were a British response to the express superliners built by German, Italian and French companies in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
The ship was named after Mary of Teck, consort of King George V. Until her launch, the name was kept a closely guarded secret. Legend has it that Cunard intended to name the ship Victoria, in keeping with company tradition of giving its ships names ending in ia, but when company representatives asked the king's permission to name the ocean liner after Britain's greatest Queen, he said his wife, Mary of Teck, would be delighted.[10] And so, the legend goes, the delegation had of course no other choice but to report that No. 534 would be called Queen Mary.
Queen Mary sailed on her maiden voyage on 27 May 1936 and won the Blue Riband that August; she lost the title to SS Normandie in 1937 and recaptured it in 1938, holding it until 1952 when she was beaten by the new SS United States. With the outbreak of the Second World War, she was converted into a troopship and ferried Allied soldiers during the conflict.
Following the war, Queen Mary was refitted for passenger service and along with Queen Elizabeth commenced the two-ship transatlantic passenger service for which the two ships were initially built. The two ships dominated the transatlantic passenger transportation market until the dawn of the jet age in the late 1950s. By the mid-1960s, Queen Mary was ageing and was operating at a loss.
After several years of decreased profits for Cunard Line, Queen Mary was officially retired from service in 1967. She left Southampton for the last time on 31 October 1967 and sailed to the port of Long Beach, California, United States, where she remains permanently moored. The ship serves as a tourist attraction featuring restaurants, a museum and a hotel. The ship is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has accepted the Queen Mary as part of the Historic Hotels of America.
Among facilities available on board Queen Mary, the liner featured two indoor swimming pools, beauty salons, libraries and children's nurseries for all three classes, a music studio and lecture hall, telephone connectivity to anywhere in the world, outdoor paddle tennis courts and dog kennels. The largest room onboard was the cabin class (first class) main dining room (grand salon), spanning three stories in height and anchored by wide columns. Many air-conditioned public rooms. The cabin-class swimming pool facility spanned over two decks in height. This was the first ocean liner to be equipped with her own Jewish prayer room – part of a policy to show that British shipping lines avoided the antisemitism evident at that time in Nazi Germany.
The cabin-class main dining room featured a large map of the transatlantic crossing, with twin tracks symbolising the winter/spring route (further south to avoid icebergs) and the summer/autumn route. During each crossing, a motorised model of Queen Mary would indicate the vessel's progress en route.
As an alternative to the main dining room, Queen Mary featured a separate cabin-class Verandah Grill on the Sun Deck at the upper aft of the ship. The Verandah Grill was an exclusive à la carte restaurant with a capacity of approximately eighty passengers, and was converted to the Starlight Club at night. Also on board was the Observation Bar, an Art Deco-styled lounge with wide ocean views.
Woods from different regions of the British Empire were used in her public rooms and staterooms. Accommodation ranged from fully equipped, luxurious cabin (first) class staterooms to modest and cramped third-class cabins.

Featuring architecture by ODA New York and rich interiors and amenities by designer Andres Escobar of Escobar Design by Lemay, Charlie West at 505 West 43rd Street offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of New York’s most vibrant neighborhood. Hell’s Kitchen’s location sits at the nexus of Manhattan’s finest attractions including Hudson Yards, the largest real estate and commercial development in the United States, the city’s best waterfront parks along the Hudson River and the liveliness of Midtown West and Times Square, home to Broadway’s biggest shows.
Charlie West at 505 West 43rd features a contemporary, industrial-inspired architectural design with two 16-story boutique buildings surrounding a serene, private courtyard. Each of the building’s 123 homes is its own sanctuary featuring sophisticated, interiors that fuse natural materials, opulent textures, high ceilings and gracious and efficient layouts. Select residences include private terraces overlooking the courtyard or the city skyline. Residents will enjoy a suite of lifestyle amenities such as a double-height resident lounge and curated library complete with fireplace.
An indoor pool with open-air access, a 6,000 square-foot landscaped private court yard, a state-of-the-art fitness center illuminated by sunlight, as well as a translucent glass-enclosed “bike box” that reimagines typical bike storage as an innovative architectural centerpiece and a 24-hour attended lobby. 900 Years of Hate | Derby Days Lombardia | Brescia Calcio v Atalanta B.C.
You know Milan,
You know its world famous football clubs.
You know its world famous derby.
But what you probably didn't know, is that in the same region of Italy just 40 minutes up the road, there's two other clubs who have just as fascinating rivalry of their own that involves tanks, pigs, and medieval battles, but hasn't seen a derby in thirteen years.
Until now.
Off the back of our insane trip to Superclåsico in Buenos Aires, Derby Days is back for season 5 and this time it's all about The Wait. The intense rivalries between clubs from England to Germany to Italy that haven’t met for 7, 8 even 13 years. What happens to a rivalry when there’s an absence of meetings? Is it a case of absence makes the heart grow fonder or is the rivalry even more heated thanks to the anxious wait?
In Episode 3, the final episode for this season, we head to Lombardy, Italy, for the first derby in more than a decade between Brescia Calcio and Atalanta B.C. Two clubs who share a rivalry that goes way beyond football and into every facet of local culture from the dialect to the food to the culture of war and violence in the region. Despite being provincial neighbours, different time spent in different divisions meant the two had been suffering their longest derby drought, until this season, where they would both finally meet in Serie A.
A massive thank you to all involved who helped, for whom without, making this film wouldn't be possible. In particular, Tobias, PiereLuigi, Ale, both Andrea's, Leo, Michaeli, Dario, Gian, Chiara, Matteo, Guilia, Tommy, and of course Claudio.
A special thank you Gav for 75 per cent of the title.
