Afternoon Ritual Devraj GatewayJodhpur
'Kesariya Baalam'
presents Jodhpur’s afternoon tradition of 'Raika Saamri Chuski', literally translating to 'Shepherd's Evening Tea'.
It’s a street tea brewed in brass mataki especially designed for the purpose and served in a mud pot called 'Kulhad'.
Chuski is inspired from the tea vendors walking the by-lanes of old city selling hot tea from door to door.

Swallowing live fish can cure asthma?
Bathini Fish Medicine Camp, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India.
Bathini Fish Medicine (also known as Bathini Mrugasira Fish) is stuffed inside the mouth of live murrel fish (Channa species also classified as Ophiocephalus) of 2 in. to 2.5 in. (5 cm to 6 cm) in size. Then fish with medicine is slipped into the mouth of the asthmatic patient.(The fish is slippery, so there is no problem in swallowing it) This live fish moves, wagging its tail and fins, through the throat and negotiates the phlegm congestion, providing cure to asthma, it is claimed. The advice is to continue taking the treatment together with a strict diet over 45 days during each of three consecutive years. The claim is that this will give a complete cure from asthma.
Bathini Fish Medicine is served and administered on a specific day called Mrigishira Karthi, which is fixed each year by astrologers and normally coincides with the arrival of monsoon rains, the first or second week of June. Bathini Fish Medicine is given on Mrigishira Karti Nakshatra. Three doses of the extra medicine is also provided to patients, which is to be taken on three successive kartis: Arudra Karthi, Punnavasu Karthi and Pushymi Karti, these days being spaced each fifteen days, making a total of 45 days. After taking Bathini Fish Medicine the patient has to be under strict diet control for 45 days.

The crowd throngs to this pandal to see amazing theme lighting and their reflection on water.
No. 7 Bag Bazar Sarbjanin Puja commite
Situated in north Kolkata, Bagbazar has one of the oldest Durga Puja pandals in the city. Bagbazar celebrated its centenary last year and the pandal was relatively simple with special emphasis on tradition and culture. It has a 16 foot tall idol and a huge chandelier decorating the ceiling.
No. 5 Badamtala & 66 Pally Sarbojanin Durgotsab Committee
Pioneer of Theme-Based Puja For over 75 years Badamtala Ashar Sangha is one the major crowd pullers. Badamtala Ashar Sangha is a long standing Durga Puja pandal (around 75 years old) that also has a special place in people's hearts. From humble beginnings it grew to win an award for creative excellence in 2010. The pandal started experimenting with themes in 1999, and was one of the first in the city to do so. Since then, its themes have been diverse and captivating. In 2019, the theme is bindu -- the name of Lord Shiva's third eye.
One of the oldest Pujas in the city, Pally Mangal Samity started its roll in the ’60s. Several Durga Puja grounds feature fairs and exhibits during the four-day festivities, Pally Mangal Samity is centering its theme around the people who are involved in bringing these seasonal fairs to us, and who work hard to give us joy. The theme conceptualised by artist Sourav Nag will go into detail as to what it really takes for the vendors, artisans, workers involved in various local fairs to execute a fair.
No.4 Shingi park
Just a stone’s throw from Ekdalia is Singhi Park, another iconic South Calcutta Pandal. Mostly based on religious and spiritual themes, the Singhi Park pandal is smaller but more ornate. A large crystal chandelier, a high stage and a larger than life idol are Singhi Park trademarks.
No. 3 Shib Mandir
another 80-year-old pujo, known for its artsy themes, small but striking idols of terracotta, and folk art inspired pandal. Irrespective of the long queues, Shib Mandir is a must visit for those who prefer smaller neighbourhood style pujos and want to see Bengal’s folk art up close and personal.
This year their theme was based on relationships and they used thread work allover to depict this beautifully.

This year, Mudiali is bringing you a variety of colours, as part of their theme, which has been conceptualised by artist Gouranga Kuila. Located at the heart of Kalighat, the Puja usually keeps it traditional when it comes to the idol and the mandap, but they go the extra mile when it comes to the detailing. For their 85th year, Mudiali’s pandal will feature some intricately arranged lights, and the strategic interplay of colours to enhance the festive feel of the pandal.
No. 1 Rajdanga Nabadoy Sangha
The Rajdanga Naba Uday Sangha Puja is themed on the issue of migration
Kolkata sex workers fight prejudice, celebrate Durga Puja
In a bustling street of Kolkata, some women are busy offering prayers to goddess Durga, while others sit beside it on a makeshift counter handing out flyers and accepting whatever small donations come their way. These are the sex workers of Sonagachi. Ostracised by the society, the sex workers have managed to erect a marquee after five years to ensure that they celebrate ‘Durga Puja’ with gusto and not amid prejudice. ‘Durga Puja’ is an annual four-day-long festival dedicated to goddess Durga, synonymous with power and feminine force. ‘Durga Puja’ marks the victory of Durga over Mahishasura. It is believed that during the festival the goddess descends on earth to rid it of demons and bless her devotees with happiness and prosperity.

DURGA POOJA IN KOLKATA
দুর্গোৎসব, 'Festival of Durga'), is an annual Hindu festival in South Asia that celebrates worship of the Hindu goddess Durga. It refers to all the six days observed as Mahalaya, Shashthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami and Vijayadashami. The dates of Durga Puja celebrations are set according to the traditional Hindu calendar and the fortnight corresponding to the festival is called Devi Paksha (Bengali:দেবী পক্ষ, 'Fortnight of the Goddess'). Devi Paksha is preceded by Mahalaya (Bengali: মহালয়া), the last day of the previous fortnight Pitri Paksha (Bengali: পিতৃ পক্ষ, 'Fortnight of the Forefathers'), and is ended on Kojagori Lokkhi Puja (Bengali: কোজাগরী লক্ষ্মী পূজা, 'Worship of Goddess Lakshmi on Kojagori Full Moon Night').
Durga Puja is widely celebrated in the Indian states of Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Tripura and West Bengal, where it is a five-day annual holiday.[3] In West Bengal and Tripura, which has majority of Bengali Hindus it is the biggest festival of the year. Not only is it the biggest Hindu festival celebrated throughout the State, but it is also the most significant socio-cultural event in Bengali society. Apart from eastern India, Durga Puja is also celebrated in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, Kashmir, Karnataka and Kerala. Durga Puja is also celebrated as a major festival in Nepal and in Bangladesh where 10% population are Hindu. Nowadays, many diaspora Bengali cultural organizations arrange for Durgotsab in countries such as the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Singapore and Kuwait, among others. In 2006, a grand Durga Puja ceremony was held in the Great Court of the British Museum.[4]
The prominence of Durga Puja increased gradually during the British Raj in Bengal.[5] After the Hindu reformists identified Durga with India, she became an icon for the Indian independence movement.[6] In the first quarter of the 20th century, the tradition of Baroyari or Community Puja was popularised due to this. After independence, Durga Puja became one of the largest celebrated festivals in the whole world.
Durga Puja also includes the worship of Shiva, who is Durga's consort, and worship of mother nature through nine types of plant (called kala bou) representing nine divine forms of Goddess Durga[7] is also done in addition to Lakshmi, Saraswati with Ganesha and Kartikeya, who are considered to be Durga's children.[8] Modern traditions have come to include the display of decorated pandals and artistically depicted idols (murti) of Durga, exchange of Vijaya greetings and publication of Puja Annuals.
