Cruise the Scottish Highlands aboard Hotel Barge Spirit of Scotland | European Waterways
Spirit of Scotland is an elegant hotel barge with extensive public areas inside and out that are perfect from which to admire the breathtaking Highlands scenery in comfort as she cruises the Caledonian Canal and the lochs of the Great Glen.
Although purpose-built less than twenty years ago as a hotel barge, her style evokes that of the traditional steamers that plied the lochs of Scotland in times gone by. Accommodating up to 12 passengers in comfort, her interior features a bright and spacious saloon and dining area with picture windows, a separate bar, and an integral forward wheelhouse giving views of the cruise route ahead. The 6 air-conditioned cabins offer a choice of twin or double beds and are complemented by well-designed en suite shower rooms.
Outside, there are separate areas where you can relax on a recliner, or perhaps in the heated spa pool, as well as a covered dining terrace. And the large upper sun deck is the ideal place to admire the dramatic backdrop as you cruise on deep-water lochs such as Loch Oich and past historic landmarks along the way.
CRUISE HIGHLIGHTS
• Tour of the Tomatin whisky distillery with a private tasting
• Majestic Falconry Display on the banks of Loch Ness
• Tour of Cawdor Castle and gardens, home of Shakespeare’s Scottish Play
• Visit Eilean Donan and Urquhart castles
• Wonderful river, canal and loch cruising & excellent opportunities for walking
• Visit Glencoe, scene of treachery between the Campbell and MacDonald clans
WHAT IS HOTEL BARGING?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especiallly on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.
This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.
Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. About half of European Waterways’ bookings are for whole boat charters, ideal for families. Otherwise, clients book a cabin to join other like-minded people. A ‘slow boat’ European Waterways barge cruise offers the ultimate in experiential travel. A truly unique experience!
European Waterways offer luxury hotel barge cruises on the beautiful canals and rivers of Europe, such as through Burgundy, the Midi, Alsace, the Po Valley, Holland and the Scottish Highlands.
The exclusive collection of hotel barges accommodate up to 20 passengers who may charter a whole barge with family or friends, or join a small group of like-minded travellers on an individual cabin basis.
Each barge is fully crewed with a Captain, chef, hostesses, deck-hand and tour guide. The 6-night cruises include gourmet meals, fine wines, open bar, excursions and the use of facilities such as bicycles and spa pools.
How Big Oil Conquered the World
TRANSCRIPT AND SOURCES:
From farm to pharmaceutical, diesel truck to dinner plate, pipeline to plastic product, it is impossible to think of an area of our modern-day lives that is not affected by the oil industry. The story of oil is the story of the modern world. And this is the story of those who helped shape that world, and how the oil-igarchy they created is on the verge of monopolizing life itself.

A busy morning and afternoon at Leeds station on the branch of the East Coast Mainline on Wednesday 20th February 2019.
Leeds info:
Leeds railway station (also known as Leeds City railway station) is the mainline railway station serving the city centre of Leeds in West Yorkshire, England. It is the third-busiest railway station in the UK outside London (as of 2018). It is located on New Station Street to the south of City Square, at the bottom of Park Row, behind the landmark Queens Hotel. It is one of 20 stations managed by Network Rail.
Leeds is an important hub on the British rail network. The station is the terminus of the Leeds branch of the East Coast Main Line (on which London North Eastern Railway provides high speed inter-city services to London every half hour from the station) and is an important stop on the Cross Country Route between Scotland, the Midlands and South West England connecting to major cities such as Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Derby, Nottingham, Reading, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth and Penzance. There are also regular inter-city services to major destinations throughout Northern England including Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield. It is also the terminus for trains running on the scenic Settle to Carlisle Line. Future expansion will link the station to the proposed High Speed 2 (HS2) network.
Leeds is a major hub for local and regional destinations across Yorkshire such as to York, Scarborough, Hull, Doncaster and Sheffield. The station lies at the heart of the Metro commuter network for West Yorkshire providing services to Bradford, Wakefield, Dewsbury, Huddersfield and Halifax.
With over 31 million passenger entries and exits between April 2017 and March 2018, Leeds is the busiest railway station in the North of England and the third-busiest railway station in the United Kingdom outside London, after Birmingham New Street and Glasgow Central.
Description:
The railway station is situated on a hill falling from the south of the city to the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal basin. Much of it is supported on Victorian brick-vaulted arches situated just off Neville Street which contain a centre consisting of cafés, restaurants, shops and exhibition spaces called Granary Wharf, known locally as the Dark Arches.
The railway station has 17 platforms, making it the largest by number of platforms in England outside London. There are 11 terminus and six through platforms. Most platforms are subdivided into up to four sections, i.e. 1a, 1b, 1c etc. All together including the numbers, there are 47 platforms. Retail facilities in the station include coffee shops, fast food outlets, a bar, newsagents, chemists, and supermarkets. A British Transport Police station on New Station Street houses officers who police the West Yorkshire railway stations.
Leeds railway station retained manned ticket barriers through the 1990s until 2008 when they were replaced by automatic barriers by Northern to reduce congestion around the barriers at peak times.
Leeds Blitz:
In 1939, the Luftwaffe launched attacks in England with one taking place in Leeds, Armley, Beeston and Bramley. Leeds New Station was one of the primary targets along with the Town Hall, Kirkgate Markets, the Central Post office, the Quarry Hill flats, Hotel Metropole and part of the Inner Ring Road. The station was bombed with unknown casualty numbers, the station was rebuilt however.
Accidents and incidents:
On 23 July 1993, a passenger train ran into the rear of another occupying a platform. Twenty-one people were injured; one seriously.
On 17 April 1997 a small bomb planted by the Provisional Irish Republican Army exploded at a relay cabinet near the station, causing the city centre's closure for six hours.
Transport links:
Leeds Interchange, located at the New Station Street exit, provides onward transport connections from the station. There are five bus stands serving Arriva, First and Yorkshire Tiger routes 4, 5, 16, 16A, 19, 19A, 40, 85, 87, 90, 757, 870 and DalesBus services. A 24-hour taxi rank also operates at the interchange.
Further bus stops are located on Neville Street below the railway station, as well as around City Square outside the railway station. Infirmary Street and Boar Lane Bus Points are a short walk for more bus connections.
2008 work:
In 2008 automated ticket gates were installed in place of the human-controlled ticket checking, to speed up the passage of passengers. When the gates came into operation at the end of October 2008 they suffered from several faults including accepting expired tickets. An oversight on the part of Northern also meant that the gates were not compatible with West Yorkshire Metro Cards.

Ireland Irish: Éire is an island to the north-west of continental Europe. It is the third-largest island in Europe and the twentieth-largest island on Earth.[5] To its east is the larger island of Great Britain, from which it is separated by the Irish Sea.
Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland, which covers just under five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, which covers the remainder and is located in the north-east of the island. The population of Ireland is approximately 6.4 million. Just under 4.6 million live in the Republic of Ireland and just over 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland.
The island's geography comprises relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain, with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable oceanic climate, which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the 17th century. Today, it is one of the most deforested areas in Europe. There are twenty-six extant mammal species native to Ireland.
A Norman invasion in the Middle Ages gave way to a Gaelic resurgence in the 13th century. Over sixty years of intermittent warfare in the 1500s led to English dominance after 1603. In the 1690s, a system of Protestant English rule was designed to materially disadvantage the Catholic majority and Protestant dissenters, and was extended during the 18th century. In 1801, Ireland became a part of the United Kingdom. A war of independence in the early 20th century was followed by the partition of the island, creating the Irish Free State, which became increasingly sovereign over the following decades, and Northern Ireland which remained a part of the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland saw much civil unrest from the late 1960s until the 1990s. This subsided following a political agreement in 1998. In 1973, both parts of Ireland joined the European Economic Community.
Irish culture has had a significant influence on other cultures, particularly in the fields of literature and, to a lesser degree, science and education. Alongside mainstream Western culture, a strong indigenous culture exists, as expressed for example through Gaelic games, Irish music, and the Irish language. The culture of the island has also many features shared with Great Britain, as expressed through sports such as soccer, rugby, horse racing, and golf, as well as the English language.

Scotland (Scottish Gaelic: Alba (Scottish is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. Occupying the northern third of the island of Great Britain, it shares a border with England to the south and is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwest. In addition to the mainland, Scotland is made up of more than 790 islands including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.
Edinburgh, the country's capital and second largest city, is one of Europe's largest financial centres. Edinburgh was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual and industrial powerhouses of Europe. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, was once one of the world's leading industrial cities and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, the third largest city in Scotland, the title of Europe's oil capital.
The Kingdom of Scotland emerged as an independent sovereign state in the Early Middle Ages and continued to exist until 1707, although it had been in a personal union with the kingdoms of England and Ireland since James VI of Scotland succeeded to the English and Irish thrones in 1603. On 1 May 1707, Scotland entered into an incorporating political union with England to create the united Kingdom of Great Britain. This union resulted from the Treaty of Union agreed in 1706 and enacted by the twin Acts of Union passed by the Parliaments of both countries, despite popular opposition and anti-union riots in Edinburgh, Glasgow and elsewhere.
Scotland's legal system continues to be separate from those of England and Wales and Northern Ireland, and Scotland constitutes a distinct jurisdiction in public and private law. The continued existence of legal, educational and religious institutions distinct from those in the remainder of the UK have all contributed to the continuation of Scottish culture and national identity since the Union

Beautiful Pictures of Golf Courses in Ireland and Scotland.
Do you want one of the very most breathtaking and sensational Golfing encounters possible? Consider Golfing in Ireland as well as Scotland courses they are really brutalizing and yet elegant. Nothing like the golf courses around the US where the courses tend to be wide open. Ireland and Scotland fairways can be narrow, typically no more than Twenty ft wide. The greens are generally tricky complete with much more twists and turns than an roller coaster ride.
Many holes you are unable to even see the green from the fairway. You will simply have to speculate where exactly
to aim. The Sand traps are truly deep that some actually have steps for you to climb in and out of them.
There are more than 400 Ireland Courses within the Republic of Ireland and incredibly, another 300 in modest Northern Ireland. Ireland and Northern Ireland, with a combind populace of just upwards of 6 million, have produced four different winners of golfs grand slam tournaments since 2007.
Scotland features more than Five-hundred courses tend to be liberally divide amongst its ten regions. The highest concentrations are around Glasgow (Ninety four courses) and Edinburgh (Sixty seven courses), because these two metropolitan areas and their environments make up the majority of the populace.
Ireland's little Emerald Isle, looms big inside the golfing world. You're able play year round, although the greatest golf weather is April through October.
The Scenery is magnificant with its fabulous majestic mountain range, beautiful Seashore and impressive Castles and villages. The Golfing can be A challenge with its narrow fairways as well as greens. To get a beautiful get-away as well as amazing Golf this is really amongst the richest locations to discover. Golf Resort Ireland by using Encore Travel.

Transcript
As soon as you've parked your car and walked into reception, you'll know that the low cost Normandy hotel at Glasgow Airport, is friendly and welcoming. So for parents, family rooms are probably most important, and here they're both comfortable and practical with bunk beds for the little ones.
Downstairs and into the restaurant, and there's plenty of choice for you and the kids. But being a steak house, this is definitely one for the meat eaters to tuck into.
There's a large bar downstairs that serves all your typical drinks, as well as hot and cold snacks available throughout the day, which is great for when little tummys get a bit hungry!
Breakfast meanwhile is a huge buffet spread! So each family member can pick their own way to start the day. Then finally it's the getting there part.
Transfer buses run every twenty minuets, and will have you at the airport in approximately five! and best of all they're included in the price. It all feels very down to earth, and comfortable here at the Normandy. The staff are wonderfully friendly, and you really can just relax and enjoy this laid back hotel.
Which frankly is probably all you're after before a long flight.
The 'DORSET COAST EXPRESS' with No.46115 Scots Guardsman - 09/07/2010
The 'Railway Touring Company' ran the first of its new regular 'Dorset Coast Express' excursions from London to Weymouth on Friday 9th July 2010.
This trip was almost like a taster for the actual main running that would start later in July. The trip ran from London down to Basingstoke before turning off for Yeovil via Salisbury. Later, the train was diesel-hauled down to Weymouth before returning to London via Bournemouth and Southampton.
People on this train were in for a special treat as the loco working their train was LMSR rebuilt 'Royal Scot'-class 4-6-0 No.46115 Scots Guardsman, an engine making what's probably its first ever visit to the South of England.
An even bigger treat awaited the passengers when the train reached Southampton Central, for 'Steam Dreams's 'Cathedral's Express' from Swanage had arrived twenty minutes earlier as was waiting in the goods loop when Scots Guardsman passed. The 'Cathedral's Express' was being worked by SR N15-class 'King Arthur' 4-6-0 No.30777 Sir Lamiel.
(See seperate video for Sir Lamiel).
