Places to see in ( Reno - USA )
Reno is a city in the U.S. state of Nevada, located in the western part of the state, approximately 22 miles from Lake Tahoe. Known as The Biggest Little City in the World, Reno is famous for its hotels and casinos. It is the county seat of Washoe County, in the northwestern part of the state. The city sits in a high desert at the foot of the Sierra Nevada and its downtown area (along with Sparks) occupies a valley informally known as the Truckee Meadows. It is named after slain Union Major General Jesse L. Reno.
Reno is the third-most populous city in Nevada after Las Vegas and Henderson and the most populous city in the state outside the Las Vegas Valley. Before the late 1950s, Reno was the gambling capital of the United States, but Las Vegas' rapid growth, American Airlines' 2000 buyout of Reno Air, and the growth of Native American gaming in California have reduced its business. Older casinos were torn down (Mapes Hotel, Fitzgerald's Nevada Club, Primadonna, Horseshoe Club, Harold's Club, Palace Club), or smaller casinos like the Comstock, Sundowner, Golden Phoenix, Kings Inn, Money Tree, Virginian, and Riverboat were either closed or were converted into condos.
Because of its location, Reno has traditionally drawn the majority of its California tourists and gamblers from the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento, while Las Vegas has historically served more tourists from Southern California and the Phoenix area.
Several local large hotel casinos have shown significant growth and have moved gaming further away from the downtown core. These larger hotel casinos are the Atlantis, the Peppermill and the Grand Sierra Resort. The Peppermill was chosen as the most outstanding Reno gaming/hotel property by Casino Player and Nevada magazines. In 2005, the Peppermill Reno began a $300 million Tuscan-themed expansion.

History and culture
The town was named for the 19th-century Chief Winnemucca of the local Northern Paiute tribe, who traditionally lived in this area. He and his band had a camp near here. Winnemucca, loosely translated, means one moccasin. The chief's daughter, Sarah Winnemucca, was an advocate for education and fair treatment of the Paiute and Shoshone tribes in the area. Their family all learned to speak English, and Sarah worked as an interpreter, scout and messenger for the United States Army during the Bannock War of 1878. In 1883 Sarah Winnemucca published the first autobiography written by a Native American woman,[3] based on hundreds of lectures she'd given in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. It has been described as one of the most enduring ethno-historical books written by an American Indian.
On September 16, 1868, the Central Pacific Railroad reached Winnemucca, and was officially opened on October 1 of that year. It was on the First Transcontinental Railroad. It was part of the transcontinental line.
Basque immigrants worked as sheep-herders starting in the mid-19th century. In honor of this heritage, Winnemucca hosts an annual Basque Festival.
On September 19, 1900, Butch Cassidy's gang robbed the First National Bank of Winnemucca of $32,640.
Winnemucca's brothel district, while smaller now than in the 1980s, is known as The Line or The Ring Circle, based on the layout of the street where the brothels are located.[citation needed] Sex workers in the town must register their vehicles with the local police.
According to a billboard along State Route 140 (the Winnemucca to the Sea Highway), Winnemucca styles itself The City of Paved Streets.
Winnemucca is home to the Buckaroo Hall of Fame and Heritage Museum. It is also the headquarters of the Flawedcast Network.
Chinatown
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Winnemucca had a vibrant Chinatown. The Chinese originally came to the area as workers on the transcontinental Central Pacific Railroad, which reached Winnemucca in 1868. Some remained or returned to settle. During the 1890s, around 400 Chinese formed a community in the town. Among their prominent buildings was the Joss House on Baud Street, a place of worship and celebration. In 1911 the community was visited by Sun Yat-Sen, later to become Chinese president. He was on a fund-raising tour of the United States to help the Xinhai Revolution.[6] The Joss House, the last structure associated with Chinatown, was demolished on March 8, 1955, by order of the Winnemucca City Council.

100 Years of Nevada History - Part 1
The Story of the Nevada Historical Society
For the past 100 years, the Nevada Historical Society in Reno has been working hard to preserve the history of our state. Now, the Society is celebrating its Centennial Year with a special exhibition and tribute to the woman responsible for saving much of Nevadas history.
With Museum Director Peter Bandurraga as your guide, youll meet founding director Jeanne Elizabeth Wier, whose vision inspired the creation of the Society in 1904, and whose dogged determination moved the dream forward. Youll share her joys and heartaches as the dream became reality and took a firm hold.
Youll see many of the important artifacts and special treasures collected over the past century, as well as a wealth of historic photographs and archival material. The video also includes interviews conducted by Series Host Gwen Clancy with a range of visitors at the opening exhibit, to find out the relevance each finds at the Nevada Historical Society today.
The Nevada Historical Society, the states oldest museum, is located at 1650 N. Virginia Street in Reno, on the University of Nevada campus. Programs include an active exhibition schedule, lectures, docent-guided tours for students, and volunteer opportunities. The research room is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday. The Main Gallery and Museum Store are open Monday through Saturday.

Steam Returns to the Owens Valley - Southern Pacific Narrow Gauge No. 18
Welcome to the Carquinez Model Railroad Society Channel
Northern California is home to many picturesque towns and hamlets. The town of Crockett California is a good example. Crockett is a gem, which grew initially as a port town on the busy strip of docks and mills that lined the Carquinez straight north of San Francisco bay in the mid to late 1800s. Ships unloaded freight into box cars 24 hours a day in the golden age of railroading for shipment to Oakland and points south along the route of the trans-continental railroad built by the Central Pacific.
In 1906, C&H sugar company grew to dominate the town as the other mills and the docks lining the straight closed. The railroad played an important role in the growth of this area. It is one reason the members of the The Carquinez Model Railroad Society decided to house its new HO scale railroad here.
Our vision is to preserve the heritage of railroading by creating a working, state-of-the-art HO scale model of the Southern Pacific/Union Pacific main line between Oakland, California and Sparks, Nevada. It is our goal to continue to research and preserve the history of model railroading by actively engaging people from every community and demographic. Through this we will teach the art of model railroading and the history and effect the railroads had on the building of California to others. This video is about You Tube Trailer
