Forest Service Thins Over Half a Million Acres of Northern Arizona Forests
November 24, 2014 -- NAZ Today reports that 600,000 acres of Northern Arizona forest are getting restored in the near future. The U.S. Forest Service has implemented a plan that will thin and treat 75% of the 600,000 acres over the next ten years by using prescribed fires to bring the forest back to its natural state. The project, that is believed to be the single largest restoration project in the nation, will improve close to 50% of impaired watersheds while also creating many forest related jobs to the community.
Preservation of the forest's most historic trees is high on the priority list, making many loggers worry about staying in business. However, the forest service says they are working with local logging companies to provide a more flexible framework for how, when and why these trees should be cut.
