Hiking Between Unicorns and Artesian Springs - New Braunfels TX
Near the center of New Braunfels, Texas is a hiking trail set between Unicorns and Artesian Springs.
Specifically, Panther Canyon Trail’s highest point sits across from the New Braunfels High School, whose mascot just happen to be the Unicorns.
It’s lowest and most frequented point of entry and exit sits at the headwater springs of the Comal River.
And this area is located with the artesian zone of the Edwards Aquifer.
Come along as I showcase this 1.2 mile trail.

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie & bunkers - Chicago hikes
If you're into prairie hiking, Midewin is a nice place where you can see bison up close if you're lucky. We saw NONE. They must have all been in hiding..?. ;)
There are also old concrete bunkers here, some of which you can explore (the door will be open).
Beware of ticks and wild parsnip, and don't go on a hot day - a prairie means no shade! ;)

DuPage Protects the Hine’s Emerald Dragonfly
The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is working hard to protect an endangered species.
There are currently an estimated 200 Hine’s emerald dragonflies in Illinois, a number that is critically low.
“Currently it’s the only federally endangered dragonfly species in the United States. It does occur in just four states, we have a small population in Illinois, there’s a population in Wisconsin, Michigan and also Missouri. And in Illinois it only occurs along the Des Plains River,” explains Invertebrate Ecologist with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, Andres Ortega.
To help increase the population, the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has received nearly $70,000 in federal funding specifically for the Hine’s emerald dragonfly.
“The grant itself is to help us raise the larva of the dragonfly. They do very poorly in the wild, they have less than 1% chance of survival from egg to adult and so the grant is for us to gather the eggs in the wild that would normally not survive, bring them here and raise them to adulthood,” said Ortega.
It takes nearly five years for this dragonfly to go from egg to adulthood, one of the reasons it is endangered.
This past May, as part of the grant, the forest preserve received over 20 larva that are around three-years-old. And this spring officials will go out in search of more eggs to raise, with the ultimate goal of raising several hundred over the next four years and then releasing them into the wild.
If you’re lucky, you can find Hine’s emerald dragonflies at the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve.
Naperville News 17’s Evan Summers reports.

Just Days Away - Come Soar In The Circle - - Potawatomi Trails Pow Wow
The Potawatomi Trails Pow Wow Committee
is a not for profit educational group located in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. The committee plans and hosts a pow-wow in Illinois, as well as many other community and Native American events. The goals of the committee are these:
To educate about Native American Cultures without the influence of other organizations and free of political affiliations.
To locate, document, and protect historical Native American sites located in and around our communities.
To preserve traditional teachings and values for the youth of our communities.
What Is A Pow-Wow?
A pow-wow is a planned social event and gathering of Native American people. It is a celebration to mark the end of a season and to welcome the beginning of a new one. It is a time and place to thank the Great Spirit for the good events of the past season and to ask continuance of these into the next. A good time is enjoyed by all. A time and place to meet old friends and make new ones. Awards and recognitions are given to the deserving. Gifts are given. Honor songs are sung. It’s a time to show-off the new dance outfits. Pow-wow times give us the chance to celebrate and reflect on Native American Heritage.
Who Participates At A Pow-Wow?
Everyone! The public is welcome. There are no spectators. When the MC announces an “inter-tribal” song everyone is welcome to dance if they choose to. Just browsing the trader booths or talking to people makes you part of the celebration.
Why Is This Called “Potawatomi Trails Pow-Wow”?
The Potawatomi Trails were established by the Native Americans who lived in this area and marked their footpaths to indicate directions. Small oak saplings were bent and tied into knots as signs to show the correct direction to travel. This pow-wow honors these people and their descendants who left these markers behind. Modern day Sheridan Road and Green Bay Road in Lake County, Illinois were built following these trails.

Illinois Greater Prairie Chicken Recovery Project
Learn about the ambitious plan to restore the Greater Prairie Chicken in Illinois. Three-year plan will translocate 300 birds from Kansas to Illinois in an effort to reestablish a stable breeding bird community. Tom Clay, Executive Director of the Illinois Audubon Society reveals the plan in this 6 minute Pechakucha at the Spring Gathering of the organization in Will County.
Here's what you should know about the merits of this project:
For more than 50 years the Illinois Audubon Society has passionately worked toward the recovery of Illinois' fragile greater prairie-chicken (GPC) population. Although Illinois' GPC population remains in peril, many grassland-dependant plant and animal species benefit from our work.
Learn more at illinoisprairiechicken.org
The GPC relocation effort is important and we are proud of our involvement in this endangered species recovery project.
Federal ($337,500 - 65%) and state ($150,397 -- 29.2%) grant funds used in this 3-year recovery project are derived from dedicated funds, generated by conservation consumers for conservation programs. No federal or state general tax dollars support this recovery project.
The Illinois Audubon Society's project cost share ($30,000 -- 5.8%) is 100% donor sponsored.
Why do we support this project? We believe this Prairie State-endangered grassland bird needs our help.
This project is good for the economy. Forty-seven million United States birdwatchers spend more than $40 billion dollars annually. That equates to a $107 billion dollar annual bird watching industry output. That $107 billion dollars include $31 billion job income and $7 billion dollars in federal and $6 billion dollars in state tax revenue nationwide. Mankato 2018: Big mid-April Snowstorm
Here are some scenes from a major snowstorm that hit Mankato, Minnesota on Saturday, April 14, 2018. A mid-April snowstorm is rare but not surprising. Minnesota weather tends to be tickled and unpredictable. This video features the music of Amy Kortuem, a harpist and one of our areas most well-known musicians. The music fits the falling snowflakes, the rushing winds, and the building snowdrifts. Purchase Amy's CD All Hayle to the Days, which includes Carol from an Irish Cabin
