CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- Downtown Charlottesville was one giant collective party on New Year's Eve as people celebrated the new year with First Night Virginia.
First Night Virginia is a family-friendly event that showcases a variety of different acts across Charlottesville. The event culminated with a laser light show at the Sprint Pavilion.
Performers around the area said the event was a lot of fun to be a part of.
Who wouldn't want to be a part of a celebration like this? Everyone is having fun, and this a perfect way to bring in the new year, said Paul Olko, lead guitarist and singer of Abbey Road.
I hope that people like the lasers. It's a very unique show, said Matt Falcon.
Some of the other acts included magicians, jugglers, drummers, dancers, and choir groups.
The operators of the Laser Light Show say that they were excited to end the night.
People who haven't seen something like this before are going to be blown away. The sky looks like liquid, there's shapes and lights all dancing to music, it's a wonderful thing, said Jack Harding, one of the laser technicians.

Excuse the shakiness. Just some amateur GoPro video from the O-Hilly 5K, hosted by the Charlottesville Area Trail Runners. This race has more than 680 feet of climbing over about three miles, and it's a tough one. But it's a lot of fun. The C'ville Trail Runners do a great job with this event.

#6 ~ I Shall Be Released ~ Bob Dylan - The Band ~ Cover w/ Gibson SJ-200 & Bluesharp
(c)1967 Words & Music by Bob Dylan, from album Music From Big Pink
Track 10 on disc 2 from B.D.´s album Bob Dylan´s Greatest Hits, Vol. 2

~~~~~~~~~
They say ev´rything can be replaced yet ev´ry distance is not near.
So I remember ev´ry face of ev´ry man who put me here.
#I see my light come shining from the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now, I shall be released.
They say ev´ry man needs protection they say ev´ry man must fall.
Yet I swear I see my reflection some place so high above this wall. # [harmonica break]
Standing next to me in this lonely crowd is a man who swears he´s not to blame.
All day long I hear him shout so loud crying out that he was framed. # [harmonica fade]
Bob Dylan wrote this in 1967 but it was not until 1971 on his Greatest Hits Vol. II album that his version was officially released.
The Band, who backed up Dylan on his first electric tour, recorded it for Music From Big Pink, which was their first album. Their version is the most well-known.
This song could be either an anti-death penalty composition or a metaphoric attempt by Dylan at looking forward to being released from Hell on Earth - possibly awaiting the release from the hell of being an innocent man wrongly imprisoned. There is a very solemn, religious hymnal quality to the song that is represented by the lyrics, My light come shining from the west unto the east, which is an apocalyptic reference.
In Robert Shelton's biography No Direction Home, he gives the song a different meaning. After Dylan's motorcycle accident in 1966, when he was 25, he retreated from the spotlight.
This was after he had suffered great disappointment at the reception his European and American tour dates brought.
He'd been booed offstage, called a traitor, and attendance dropped at some of his concert dates.
Dylan was seriously injured in the accident, and Shelton states that Dylan withdrew not only to recuperate, but to spend the time in self reflection, and with his family.
He goes further, saying that the song represents Dylan's search for personal salvation.
Other artists to record this song include Bette Midler, Joan Baez, Nina Simone and Chrissie Hynde (MSG 1993).
