NUWARA ELIYA TEA PLANTATIONS · SRI LANKA 2018 I TRAVEL VLOG #59
Nuwara Eliya is such a stunning place, so of course we had to spend a few days there on our way to Ella. We hired a tuktuk to take us outside of city to the beautiful tea plantations and to the enormous Ramboda Waterfalls.
If you're in need of a really nice driver in Nuwara Eliya, we recommend our guy Chandimal. His number is 0755777597 :) Say hello from us!
We went to two different tea factories, Macbook (which is now called Damro) and Blue Field, and both experiences were really good. If you can only go to one, we'd recommend Blue Fields, because you're allowed to go into the tea fields, and because the guided tour is a bit better there, but the views from the Macbook tea factory are amazing!
Ramboda Waterfalls outside of Nuwara Eliya is definitely also worth visiting if you're in the area. It was much larger than we expected, and as you can see – it was definitely a hike!
We took the train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, so stay tuned for our next video which is about the train beautiful train journey between Kandy and Ella in Sri Lanka.

Hi there! I'm Anne-Li – Danish girl, globetrotter, travel vlogger, blogger and digital nomad traveling the world with my partner in crime and long-term boyfriend Mathias. Spending a month in Budapest every summer taught us that traveling does not have to be expensive and that slow travel is the way to go – for us. We have been traveling full-time since September 2016, and we usually base ourselves in one place for at least a month or two. This way of traveling is not only budget friendly – it also means that we can take our time and really explore and enjoy the place we're in. We eat local food, shop at local markets, meet local people and enjoy experiencing different cultures – all the while seeking out the best wifi and exploring everything there is to explore. Everyday is another adventure, and we’d love for you to be part of it!

The walk to the political rally, Colombo, Sri Lanka
I had heard that there was going to be a large rally held by the parties of the present government. I am not venturing there on account of anticipated crowd misbehavior and was in a tuktuk to elsewhere in Colombo when the procession to the rally turned up. Political rallies in Sri Lanka are more carnivals than serious events. The leaders of the movements make impassioned speeches mostly on the subject of the sins and imperfections of their political opponents and shout to impress the television audiences as much as the crowd. These rallies are well attended mostly by young men, partly owing to the free distribution of alcohol and food. The politicians once in office typically break every one of their election promises and statements of intent and embark on the discreet plundering of State assets with the unofficial approval of certain foreign powers. The members of the public are ignorant of what is going on and they can't get what they need to know from the media because the journalists and editors are under intimidation. Do note the masked woman on the back of a motorcycle; she and the motorcycle driver probably follow Islamic instructions. This trend towards extremist Islam is spreading and has taken over the nearby Maldives Islands, I hear.
Sri Lanka, Public Baths (who wants to swim in a brothel?), Episode 40
Many countries have hot springs and public baths, but Sri Lanka has its very own versions. From ancient holy baths in palaces/brothels to river laundry spots, this is a light hearted review of my public bathing discoveries.

Public Baths, Sri Lanka, Video 40
After breakfast on our second package driver day I decide I’d like to visit a public bath.
Maybe I could find one in Polonnaruwa the capital of the second most ancient kingdom of Sri Lanka. The city dates back to 1070 AD and hosts lots of ruined palaces, conical chambers and out buildings.
Our fist stop was the Council Chamber of King Nissankamalia, then the Council Chamber of King Parakramabahu and then King Parakramabahu’s Palace. I’m told that somewhere in this maze was a royal bath.
We continued the search in Vatadage, then Hatadage Tooth Relic Temple and finally a Royal Bath. Found it but the water didn’t look so clean. Plus a bit too public for my taste.
In contrast the public bath & laundry seemed to please the locals.
We were then off to Siva Davale and the Elephant Bath. That’s an elephant bath, I was looking for a people bath.
We did then stumble upon the Dry Lotus Pond that was a bit too dry then a river spot that didn’t look appealing, plus was already occupied
The next day we visited Sigriya, know as the Lion’s Rock. It’s an ancient rock fortress palace dating from 477 AD. But it was used as a mountain monastery before that (from the 5th century BC).
It rises 370 meters and getting to the top involves a long series of steps. Definitely not for the faint of heart.
Some historians believe the palace was really a royal brothel. Palace, brothel, same, same, but different in my view.
At the terrace we start the climb between the lion’s paws. At the top we found the ruins of a complex palace network, and yes, a very nice royal bath called the Sigiriya Royal Bath.
See you in the water.
