St. Paul's Cathedral Church in Kolkata: aerial journey over Calcutta
An aerial journey of St. Paul's Cathedral Church in Kolkata.
St Paul’s Cathedral is acknowledged as the first Episcopal Church of the eastern world. It is an Anglican cathedral of the Church of North India. Besides, being a religious site, the cathedral is also an architectural marvel. St. Paul’s Cathedral is 247 feet in length, 81 feet in width and 114 feet at transept. The flagstaff rises to a height of 175 feet above ground level. The St. Paul’s Cathedral took eight years to be built at a whopping cost of Rs. 5 lakhs (Five Hundred Thousand rupees) and was finally consecrated by Bishop Wilson on 8th October 1847. The cathedral’s tower is modelled on the “Bell Harry” tower of Canterbury Cathedral and the cathedral overall resembled England’s Norwich Cathedral with three Gothic stained glass windows and two frescoes in Florentine Renaissance style. You would also find a library above the western porch with a modest collection of Bishop Wilson’s collection and a marble bust of the Bishop. There are several sculptures and memorials like the “Episcopal Throne” and an ornamented wall – Reredo, carved with incidents from the life of St. Paul.
Footage of an aerial view of the St. Paul Cathedral, many other nearby buildings, and lush green trees can be seen in the foreground. St. Paul's Cathedral in Kolkata (Calcutta) is considered to be the first Episcopal Cathedral Church in India. The cathedral gets a lot of visitors, especially during Christmas. It is the mother church of Diocese of Calcutta in the church of North India.

3 Exploring Kolkata, India: St. Paul's Cathedral and Mother Teresa's Home, Nov 2012
Kolkata, India, November, 2012
We visited Indira Ghandi Statue and saw St Paul's Cathedral with the incredible stained glass windows and a large area for congregants. We walked to see Mother Teresa's House but like Victoria Monument it was closed until 3pm. As was St. James Church. We had a soda at Heaven Hotel until we could return to Mother Teresa's Home. We saw her tomb and the room she occupied for her last thirty years. She is a testament to what you can accomplish with persistence, passion and tenacity.
We walked to Victoria Memorial for the Sound and Light show. The 6:15pm show was in Bengali but we went anyway. There was an English version at 7:00pm. Tickets for the front were 20Rp but we misunderstood and thought the price difference was for the two languages so we took the 10Rp tickets for the seats a tiny bit further back. In the vast crowded city, there were maybe twenty people at the Saturday night show.
This is the first of many movies of our travels in India. We journeyed mainly by public bus from November 23, 2012 in Kolkata to February 8, 2013 when we crossed into Nepal. Enjoy all our India movies.

Entrance to the Water Gate of Fort William in Kolkata
The entrance to the Water Gate of Fort William in Kolkata in olden days. See an old cannon in the premises of Fort William.
Fort William in Kolkata stands majestically on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River. History reveals that there were two Fort Williams, the old and the new. The original Fort William was built in 1696. It earlier consisted of a two storied building and the guard room of this building.
During the Plassey war in 1757, Siraj Ud Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal attacked on the fort and defeated the Britishers. The prisoners were captured in a dungeon and the incident is known as black hole tragedy. Post attack, the British became aware of their weakness and strengthened the Fort. Sir Robert Clive commenced the building of the new fort completed in 1780.
Fort William owing to its octagonal shape faces the River Ganga from three sides. The other five sides are embraced in lush green gardens. The fort is enclosed by a moat that could be filled with water when required. The Fort also has a facility to accommodate ten thousand interns. The huge archway is popularly known as “Plassey Gate”. There are six entry points namely Chowringhee, Plassey Calcutta, Water Gate St Georges and the Treasury Gate. In 1928, St. Peter Church was constructed inside the fort.

Biggest Cathedral Church IN Kolkata | ST. Paul's Cathedral Church | INSIDE & OUTSIDE |
ST. Paul's Cathedral is a CNI (Church of North India) Cathedral of Anglican background in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, noted for its Gothic architecture. It is the seat of the Diocese of Calcutta. The cornerstone was laid in 1839; the building was completed in 1847. It is said to be the largest cathedral in Kolkata and the first Episcopal Church in Asia. It was also the first cathedral built in the overseas territory of the British Empire. The edifice stands on Cathedral Road on the island of attractions to provide for more space for the growing population of the European community in Calcutta in the 1800s.
Following the 1897 earthquake and the subsequent massive earthquake of 1934, when Calcutta suffered substantial damage, the cathedral was reconstructed to a revised design. The architectural design of the cathedral is Indo-Gothic, a Gothic architectural style designed to meet the climatic conditions of India. The cathedral complex has a library, situated over the western porch, and a display of Plastic art forms and memorabilia.
Apart from that of Bishop Daniel Wilson, the founder of the cathedral, the other notable burial in the church is that of John Paxton Norman, an acting Chief Justice who was assassinated in 1871.

TRANSCRIPT: The other place that left a big impression on me that we lived for a long time... We moved back to Baltimore, we lived in Texas, we moved... But the place that probably left the biggest impression on me was India. We lived in Calcutta for a couple of years. And that was when I was kind of junior... Probably eighth grade maybe. So 14, 15.
And India, again, was an incredibly exotic place but we were in the middle of a city in Calcutta, it was extraordinary, it was rickshaw drivers and every morning, literally... I mean, there were people that lived on the streets, every morning there was a truck that came and picked up the bodies of the people that had died during the night. And it was very, very poor. Lots of refugees from the country. All kinds of cultures of... I remember being struck by, you know, in America we think of ourselves as diverse but when you go into the bathroom everyone does the same thing. In Calcutta when you go into the bathroom everybody would do something different. It was...
And there were Hindu idols and malas calling people to prayer. And we went to a Christian church. But it was the most multi-cultural place I've ever been to. But again just so alive and so exciting. And going through the market places and again I felt perfectly safe wandering around the whole city. I really felt like the city was mine. I would ride the tram cars or take rickshaws and walk. And I just loved that city.
Again, the smells, completely different than the smells of Africa, but spices and of course humans. The people smell different. The Indians were very physically clean, even the people living on the streets would bathe every day in the water pumps.
And there we also ran into kind of a different kind of racism which is the British were there. And most of the swimming clubs they wouldn't allow Indians in the swimming clubs, only the British were allowed. And so the Calcutta Swimming Club or... Which we would go to sometimes with our friends. At that time wouldn't allow Indians. Maybe that one would, I don't know, a lot of them wouldn't. But so we joined the Tollygunge Club, because it did allow Indians. It was one of the only swimming clubs that allowed... Swimming Clubs were very important because it was very hot and we didn't have any air conditioning. And... But then we did... But then they decided that... I've got it backwards, no. Maybe it's the Tollygunge Club didn't allow Indians and the Calcutta Swimming Club did. I think that's right. We joined that. But the Tollygunge Club... we discovered this because when we applied they needed to meet us and kind of look us over before allowing us into the club. And we figured out that they were looking us over to make sure we weren't Indian.
So we didn't join that club that was closest to our house, we joined the Calcutta Swimming Club which did allow Indians, which was much farther away but had a better pool anyway.
