UK: Protestant Orange Order march rerouted to avoid Catholic church

Members of the County Grand Orange Lodge of Glasgow, a protestant fraternal order, hit the streets of Glasgow on Saturday, after their march was re-routed by the police to avoid a Catholic church.
The rerouting was implemented after the police reportedly raised concerns, as about 200 extra officers would have been needed to deal with the march itself and a counter-protest would have taken place had the route not been changed.
Last year, the priest of St Alphonsus Church Tom White had been spat on during the Orange Order's march by a 24-year-old man who was consequently jailed.
Edward McGonnell, the County Grandmaster of Grand Orange Lodge of Glasgow, said we have never witnessed anything like this. This was an isolated incident created by a bystander who had no connection whatsoever with the Orange institution.

Scottish Government Reception for Catholic Schools at Edinburgh Castle
Last night the Catholic Church in Scotland was honoured to be invited to a reception organised by the Scottish Government at a windy Edinburgh Castle.
Deputy First Minister John Swinney MSP led tributes to Catholic Education on behalf of the Scottish Government as well as words from Archbishop Tartaglia and the Papal Nuncio to Great Britain Archbishop Edward Adams.
The highlight of the night for many was the wonderful musical
performances from St Ambrose HS Coatbridge and Notre Dame HS Greenock.
Recording choir of St Mary's Cathedral Edinburgh Scotland
This video is an introduction to the choristers at St Mary's Music School and the choir of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland. We see the young choristers and organists as they prepare in June, 2006, for recording sessions for the Pro Organo CD Hear My Words, Ye People.
The Choir of St Mary's Cathedral (Mother Church of the Diocese of Edinburgh in the Scottish Episcopal Church) has been described by the Sunday Times as one of the UK's finest cathedral choirs. It is unique in Scotland in maintaining a tradition of daily Anglican choral services. The choristers are educated at St Mary's Music School, Scotland's only specialist music school, which is also the choir school for the cathedral. St Mary's Cathedral became the first in the UK to offer girls scholarships to sing as trebles in 1978, and in 2006, became possibly the first British daily choral foundation to offer alto Choral Scholarships and Lay Clerk positions to women as well as men. St Mary's Cathedral website is: cathedral.net . St Mary's Music School website is: st-marys-music-school.co.uk
The choir is led in this video by Simon Nieminski nieminski.com , who at the time this video and CD were recorded, was Organist and Master of the Music. Mr Nieminski is still active in Edinburgh, but now concentrates upon his work as both a liturgical and concert organist. His new post is that of organist at St Mary's RC Cathedral in Edinburgh.
Also seen in this video is a principal of St Mary's Music School, and Judy Brown, an adult alto in the choir. Organists seen in the video are Organ Scholar Ruaraidh Sutherland and Assistant Organist Duncan Ferguson.
Music heard in the video: At the choir rehearsal, and also the organist's rehearsal, we hear excerpts from the extended anthem entitled Hear My Words, Ye People by Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry. In the recording session video in the Cathedral, the choir sings O for a closer walk with God by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. The Stanford anthem can be downloaded as a high-quality MP3 file for only US$1.00 by finding it in the Choral section of the download site: mypipes.org
The organ of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, seen and heard in this video is a 1870s vintage Father Henry Willis organ, which has been maintained and well cared for over many decades by Harrison & Harrison. Harrison and Harrison's website is: harrison-organs.co.uk
The Pro Organo CD Hear My Words, Ye People CD 7208, is available from zarex.com/bin and at proorgano.com , as well as from many other retailers in the USA, UK and Europe, including arkivmusic.com .

Prof. Diarmaid MacCulloch - Catholic Christianity and the Arrival of Ascetism, 100-400
Lecture 2: Catholic Christianity and the arrival of ascetism, 100-400
Counter-strands to silence in the early Church, encouraged by its congregational worship and cult of martyrdom, and the effect of gnostic Christianities in shaping what the emerging Catholic Church decided to emphasise or ignore.
The emergence of new positive theologies of silence: negative theology and its sources in the Platonic tradition; the development of asceticism in the mainstream Church in Syria from the second century, and its possible sources: the place of silence in the development of monasticism and eremetical life in Christianity.
The importance of the remaking of monasticism in Egypt; the vital role of a forgotten theologian, Evagrius Ponticus.

St Giles Cathedral by Drone (Edinburgh)
Very excited that we got the opportunity to film inside the beautiful St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh yesterday evening with the smaller of our drones, the DJI F550! To say we were nervous would be an understatement but with some careful planning, gentle flying and a thorough risk assessment we got some great footage!
