St Andrews church Antwerp
Travel Guide Antwerp, Belgium - Tasty in Antwerp: St. Andrew's
St. Andrew's was once known as ‘the Parish of Hardship’, but those days are long since passed. The Fashion Museum is the public face of the neighbourhood, and in the Nationalestraat and Kammenstraat area vintage clothing and haute couture go hand in hand. There’s always something going on in this district. And don’t miss Kloosterstraat, with its shops full of antique treasures and bric-a-brac.

Rubens' Baroque art celebrated in Antwerp
(1 Jun 2018) LEADIN
A new festival in Belgium is paying homage to the Baroque style of master painter Peter Paul Rubens.
In the 1600s Rubens' bold and dramatic approach to art burst into life across hundreds of canvasses.
STORYLINE
An oversize painting vividly projecting both cruelty and compassion stands tall in the studio room of the Rubens House museum in Antwerp.
The Martyrdom of St. Andrew by Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens is here on loan from Spain as part of the Baroque festival that begins on 1 June in the Belgian city.
Antwerp Baroque 2018. Rubens Inspires celebrates the artistic movement and the Flemish master who transformed Antwerp into a Baroque treasure.
The festival boasts an ambitious program that is unfolding over the course of six months; it includes exhibits, walking tours of Antwerp's churches as well as museums, concerts, performances and even Baroque-inspired murals.
Organizers say while there have been other Baroque events in Antwerp this is the largest.
With its dramatic scene seemingly bursting out of the frame, The Martyrdom of St. Andrew is an apt example of the Baroque style that swept through the art and architectural world in the 17th Century.
Inspired by theatre, Baroque favoured unfiltered emotions and portrayed characters caught wide-eyed in the heat of the moment: anguished, desperate, elated, yearning.
The style blossomed in churches and royal courts in the years of the Counter-Reformation in Europe and Latin America.
Baroque was a reaction to the idyllic perfection of Renaissance art of the 1500's; as if a century later humanity had suddenly discovered that life is unpredictable, surprising, painful and sensual.
The style developed in Italy thanks to the painter Caravaggio and sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
Nele Vervoort is an an expert at Rubens' House Educational Department. She says the festival centres around the figure of Rubens, one of the most important Baroque painters of all times.
The name of the festival is 'Baroque 2018; inspired by Rubens'. So he's the most important person in Antwerp concerning Baroque. After him many artists looked at him and they learned a lot from his work, Vervoort says.
Rubens was born in Germany but relocated to his parents' hometown of Antwerp, what was then the Spanish Netherlands.
After completing his artistic training, the artist left for Italy where he remained for eight years.
In Venice Rubens got up close with the works of Titian and Tintoretto. In Rome, where Baroque was born and in full bloom, he was introduced to Caravaggio's and Annibale Carracci's masterpieces.
After his Italian experience, Rubens returned to Antwerp a changed man.
His exposure to Baroque's greatest artists proved a pivotal moment in his career and brought a sweeping revision of his painting style.
Ben van Beneden, the director of the Rubens House museum, praises Rubens' artistic prowess and unparalleled intensity.
He's so rich, he's so layered, he's so vast that you can actually keep on staring (at) Rubens and every time you find that you discovered something new, van Beneden says.
Rubens quickly introduced Baroque to the Flanders; he was an endless source of inspiration for his contemporaries who contributed to change and defined the city's appearance based on the new style.
Churches, cathedrals and homes in Antwerp suddenly filled up with Baroque artworks.
Rubens House boasts a large collection of 17th Century Flemish painters.
The Baroque festival runs until January 2019.

St Andrew's Church, Burnham on Sea Somerset.
St Andrew's Church is the Church of England parish church of Burnham-on-Sea in the English county of Somerset. Of medieval origins, the church is a grade I listed building, well known for its leaning tower.
History
There has been a church on this site since the late 11th century. Between 1305 and 1314 the original church was either replaced or enhanced; the parts of that church that still stand are the south transept, the south door arch, the holy water stoop and the consecration cross. The tower dates from the late 14th century, and the nave from the late 14th/early 15th century. The north aisle and gallery were added in 1838, and the chancel arch modified at this time. The chancel itself was remodelled in 1878.
Leaning tower
The leaning tower, 78ft high, gets a lot of attention from tourists. Apparently if a plumb line is dropped from the north side of the tower it would fall 3 feet away from the building. This major leaning is believed to be caused by the poor foundations.
During the 18th century a light was placed on the tower to guide fishing boats into the harbour. A local vicar, either John Goulden in 1764 or Walter Harris in 1799, raised a subscription amongst the local population to replace the light on the church. A four storey round tower was built next to the church, being completed in 1801. This was taken over and improved by Trinity House, in 1829. Funds from the sale were used by the vicar, Rev David Davies, to improve the area in an attempt to create a spa town. Trinity House operated the lighthouse until 1832 when it became inactive and was replaced by the High and Low lighthouses. The round tower was later shortened to two storeys, to prevent any confusion with the High Lighthouse.
The tower holds a ring of eight bells hung for change ringing. The present ring contains bells cast at various dates by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry.
Sculptures
A number of marble carvings designed by Sir Christopher Wren for the private chapel in the Palace of Whitehall can be now seen in the church. These sculptures formed part of an altar commissioned by James II in 1685 and were sculpted by Inigo Jones as part of wider work by Grinling Gibbons and his assistant Arnold Quellin, a Belgian artist of Antwerp. After having originally been taken to Westminster Abbey in 1706, where they were placed behind the High Altar, they were moved to Burnham in the late 18th or early 19th century when Walker King the Bishop of Rochester (also then vicar of Burnham-on-Sea), acquired them. King wrote pamphlet about it which was sold to raise money for charity.
What one sees at Burnham is only part of the whole design; the main panels are behind the altar with the remainder of the fragments displayed at various places in the main body of the church. They first occupied the whole of the east wall behind the altar.
