St. Anthony's Monastery - Arizona
Way out in the Arizona desert, there's a Greek Orthodox monastery. Laszlo and I took a trip out to there, since it's open to visitors. We weren't allowed to speak to, or take photos of the monks who actually reside there.
And the video is supposed to be quiet and peaceful (in the monastery). Anything else would be downright disrespectful.

The Spiritual War -- Elder Ephraim of Philotheou and Arizona
This is video from 1992 and filmed at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Pittsburgh, PA upon an unexpected visit from Elder Ephraim. Archimandrite Ephraim of Philotheou, commonly known as Elder Ephraim, is an archimandrite and former abbot of Philotheou Monastery on Agion Oros. He is also the Elder of at least four (as of 2002) of the twenty main monastic houses on the Holy Mountain, and one skete, as well as many monasteries and convents throughout Greece. He is also the founder of numerous monasteries and convents in the United States. He resides in Florence, Arizona at St. Anthony Greek Orthodox Monastery. Elder Ephraim has been a priest-monk for the past 60 years and has served as an elder for almost 50 years. He was a disciple of Saint Joseph the Hesychast of Mount Athos and lived in monastic obedience to him for 12 years until his Elder's repose on the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God in 1959.
* December 7th 2019, the much-beloved +Elder Ephraim of Arizona reposed in the Lord after being ill for many years. According to reports, Elder Ephraim was aware of his impending death some days before, and despite this he would still daily go out and give his blessing to the people. His personal doctor told him to not go out Saturday evening, the day of his repose, to bless the people. Elder Ephraim was lucid on the day of his repose and partook of the Immaculate Mysteries. Then at 9:00pm (Mountain Standard Time), as he was upright occupied with something, he suddenly tilted slightly to the side and died. Nurses found him practically upright, having delivered his spirit to the Lord.

Metéora, Unique Eastern Orthodox Monasteries in Greece
The Metéora (literally: middle of the sky, suspended in the air or in the heavens above) is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece. The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece.
In the 9th century, an ascetic group of hermit monks moved up to the ancient pinnacles. They were the first people to inhabit Metéora. They lived in hollows and fissures in the rock towers, some of which reach 1800 ft above the plain. This great height, combined with the sheerness of the cliff walls, kept away all but the most determined visitors. Initially the hermits led a life of solitude, meeting only on Sundays and special days to worship and pray in a chapel built at the foot of a rock known as Dhoupiani. As early as the 11th century AD hermit monks were believed to be living among the caves and cutouts in the rocks.
The exact date of the establishment of the monasteries is unknown. By the late 11th and early 12th centuries, a rudimentary monastic state had formed and was centered around the still-standing church of Theotokos. By the end of the 12th century, an ascetic community had flocked to Metéora.
At the end of the 14th century, the Byzantine Empire's 800-year reign over northern Greece was being increasingly threatened by Turkish raiders who wanted control over the fertile plain of Thessaly. The hermit monks, seeking a retreat from the expanding Turkish occupation, found the inaccessible rock pillars of Meteora to be an ideal refuge. More than 20 monasteries were built, beginning in the 14th century. Six remain today.

The Problem with Ephraim of Arizona
In 2007, at an Orthodox Conference on Ecumenism at the University of Chicago, Fr. Maximos Marretta (now Bishop Maximos of Pelagonia) took up the challenge of demonstrating that the New Calendarist, and the Ecumenist Orthodox churches, even though they contain pseudo-traditionalist movements such as that of Elder Ephraim of Arizona, have officially accepted heretical teachings. NOTE: a transcript of the essay presented by Fr. Maximos can be found here: Another of his essays on the subject of Ecumenism:
