THE PRESTIGE HOTEL
The Prestige Hotel is a local, homegrown brand proud of its heritage and culture. It is part of a growing global phenomenon of locally rooted boutique hospitality brands, which aims to offer authentic and bespoke guests’ experiences.
Drawing from the rich context of its location, it welcomes the urbane traveler to a contemporized and magical quasi - colonial universe carefully created and curated by Ministry of Design, the internationally acclaimed studio from Singapore. The studio is responsible for the holistic strategy, branding, interior design and art creation throughout the entire Prestige Penang project.
The Prestige is located in Church Street Penang within the core zone of the George Town UNESCO world heritage site. Once the commercial district of 19th century George Town, the many beautiful and intricate Victorian buildings found along Church Street today still houses banking and commercial facilities.
While the colonial Victorian heritage and tropics are key elements of the design concept, the studio considered the long narrow site of the hotel and used it to its advantage. Capitalizing on the difficult condition of the site, the studio used the shop in shop concept to break down the linear scale of the floor plate; resulting in a delightful retail arcade at the ground floor. A similar innovative approach was applied to the long room corridors where mechanized light features placed at regular intervals rotate and cast light and shadow patterns to magically animate the journey. This visual animation and trickery (smoke and mirrors) was thus borne out of a response to the unusual specificity of the site.
This element of visual trickery and surprise is subtly introduced throughout the 162 room hotel; transformation of familiar heritage floor patterns, furniture design such as the custom reception desk that seems to magically balance on balls and hidden doors that open to reveal toilets and pantries.
Rubenshuis. Feats won't fail us now, down the road.
Little Tribute to Lowell Thomas George (1945-79), Little Feat. Glad I got to see Little Feat, before then, in a college- gymnasium, near Greensboro, NC with Charlie Daniels as the main act...
In Antwerp, Rubens received a humanist education, studying Latin and classical literature. By fourteen he began his artistic apprenticeship with Tobias Verhaeght. Subsequently, he studied under two of the city's leading painters of the time, the late Mannerist artists Adam van Noort and Otto van Veen.[3] Much of his earliest training involved copying earlier artists' works, such as woodcuts by Hans Holbein the Younger and Marcantonio Raimondi's engravings after Raphael. Rubens completed his education in 1598, at which time he entered the Guild of St. Luke as an independent master.[4]
Italy (1600–1608)[edit]
The Fall of Phaeton, 1604 in National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. - 98.4 × 131.2 cm (38.7 × 51.7 in)
In 1600, Rubens travelled to Italy. He stopped first in Venice, where he saw paintings by Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto, before settling in Mantua at the court of Duke Vincenzo I Gonzaga. The coloring and compositions of Veronese and Tintoretto had an immediate effect on Rubens's painting, and his later, mature style was profoundly influenced by Titian.[5] With financial support from the Duke, Rubens travelled to Rome by way of Florence in 1601. There, he studied classical Greek and Roman art and copied works of the Italian masters. The Hellenistic sculpture Laocoön and his Sons was especially influential on him, as was the art of Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo da Vinci.[6] He was also influenced by the recent, highly naturalistic paintings by Caravaggio.
He later made a copy of that artist's Entombment of Christ, recommended that his patron, the Duke of Mantua, purchase The Death of the Virgin (Louvre),[7] and was instrumental in the acquisition of The Madonna of the Rosary (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna) for the Dominican church in Antwerp. During this first stay in Rome, Rubens completed his first altarpiece commission, St. Helena with the True Cross for the Roman church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme.
