Measuring dinosaur tracks for mapping

Natural cast of a dinosaur (possibly dilophosaur) footprint
This Eubrontes ichnofossil (fossilized dinosaur footprint #SGDS-664) was collected in 2004 during excavations near the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm in St. George, Utah. It was found in lower Jurassic sediments of the Moenave Formation, representing an age of 190-195 million years ago. SGDS-664 is part of the permanent displays at the museum.
The natural cast is believed to represent the overall size, shape, and some surface details of the foot reasonably accurately. Those features suggest that the original footprint was made by a theropod. Dilophosaurids were the first known major radiation of large predatory theropod dinosaurs which would be consistent with lower Jurassic sediments. Because of this, it seems likely that a dilophosaur made the footprint. Dilophosaurs were in the range of 6-8 meters long, and their hindlimbs suggest they were fast and agile runners. At the St. George site, footprints like SGDS-664 are found in association with swim tracks. Combined with other anatomical evidence, this suggests dilophosaurs may have been piscivorous in at least some of their geographical range.
A scaled 3-dimensional geometry and surface texture of the footprint were created with Agisoft Photoscan photogrammetry software using 225 still images. The photogrammetry model was subsequently used to create this animation using Blender.
There is a length scale bar visible in the animation. It has black and white major divisions of 10 mm. The distance between the centers of the circular markers is 50 mm.
The background image used in the animation, entitled, “Dilophosaurus,” was created by James Kuether. The image is used with the artist’s permission. (jameskuether.com/)
The audio track used in the intro and end sections was excerpted from, “Crypto,” by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons:
The main audio track was mixed from clips available on freesound.org. The sampled tracks were: #60087, #249440, #347649, and #372592.
Agisoft LLC, St. Petersburg, Russia, provided financial support for the photogrammetry software which is greatly appreciated.

Phytosaur Skull UMNH.VP.24304
This nearly complete phytosaur skull was collected in April 2009, under BLM permit #UT08-004S issued to Andrew Milner. It was found by Robin Prunty and Ken Cart in the red bed ledges of the Church Rock Member of the Chinle Formation in Lisbon Valley, Utah.
Crews from the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm and the Natural History Museum of Utah excavated and collected the specimen. Preparation work, which totaled about 1,700 man-hours, was completed at SGDS by Bob Baldazzi, Linda Hoernke, and Andrew Milner.
The specimen was assigned to the genus, Machaeroprosopus (‘knife face’), by Martz, Irmis, and Milner, in their 2014 publication “Lithostratigraphy and biostratigraphy of the Chinle Formation (upper Triassic) in southern Lisbon Valley, southeastern Utah,” in MacLean, Biek, and Huntoon, (eds), Geology of Utah’s Far South: Utah Geological Association Publication 43, p. 397–448.
Some of the skull’s defining characters include strongly depressed and constricted supratemporal fenestra, as well as postorbitosquamosal bars that are very broad in dorsal view. The supratemporal fenestrae retain slit-like indentations on the skull roof. The postorbitosquamosal bars have low, rounded lateral margins without the sharp lateral ridges found in other Machaeroprosopus species. The squamosals also have broadly-rounded posterior margins in dorsal view instead of mediolaterally constricted, knob-like tips.
Arthur J. Dorety III ( was kind enough to permit the use of his original artwork for the animation background. More of Arthur’s work can be viewed at
The geometric model and surface details for the animation were created using Agisoft Photoscan ( The model is based on 274 images mostly recorded in circuits around the long axis of the skull and 27 additional images used for scaling. The exported OBJ-format geometric model was animated and the video was rendered using Blender (
The audio was mixed from tracks available on freesound.org. The source track numbers and producers are: #38757 by stormpetrel, #272408 by Astronomica, and #38487 by larval1977.
All images of the skull are used with permission of the Natural History Museum of Utah which retains their copyrights.
