Ilokandia 2008 - Badoc and Batac
Ilokandia is known for its magnificent landscapes, rugged coastlines, and the natural charm of the Ilocos Region, which have captivated international film makers, and has served as the perfect setting for some memorable movies like Tom Cruise's Born on the Fourth of July and Mel Gibson's Mad Max series. It is also famous for its historic landmarks. This part of a series of videos focuses on the towns of Badoc and Batac.
Badoc was established as a pueblo (town) by the Augustinian friars in 1714, the same year that the parish church, known as the Saint John the Baptist Church, was constructed. The townfolk recounted that the church was built under the Spanish forced labor decree, and that during the whole construction process, not a single drop of water was used. The concreting materials were made purely of sugarcane juice, which the natives contributed under the family quota system. The famous Filipino painter, Juan Luna, was baptized in this church on October 27, 1857. Now the church is the shrine of the La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc.
This sleepy town has also become a tourist attraction in Ilokandia because it is home to the famous Luna brothers, Juan Luna and Antonio Luna. The reconstructed house, now popularly known as the Juan Luna Historical Landmark, with its original grandeur and antiquity fully restored, together with the Luna Park (which is considered one of the most beautiful parks in Northern Luzon) continue to draw more visitors and tourists almost everyday. The restored house has been converted into a museum that showcases various memorabilia and artworks of Luna, including a reproduction of his masterpiece, the Spolarium, which won the gold medal in the 1884 Exposicion General de Bellas Artes in Madrid. A more recent addition to the museum's collection is Luna's original painting The Parisian Life, completed in 1892 - a significant period in Philippine history.
Batac, on the other hand, is a more popular tourist destination because it is the home town of former Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos. It is also the birthplace of Gregorio Aglipay, the founder of the Philippine Independent Church (the Aglipayan Church). The ancestral house of the late strongman has been converted into a museum, and adjacent to it is his mausoleum, where his remains are interred inside a refrigerated crypt.

SUMMARY
=======
The Philippine Revolution (Filipino: Himagsikang Pilipino; Spanish: Revolución Filipina), also called the Tagalog War (Spanish: Guerra Tagalog, Filipino: Digmaang Tagalog) by the Spanish, was a revolution and subsequent conflict fought between the people and insurgents of the Philippines and the Kingdom of Spain - including its Spanish Empire and Spanish colonial authorities in the Spanish East Indies.
The Philippine Revolution began in August 1896, when the Spanish authorities discovered the Katipunan, an anti-colonial secret organization. The Katipunan, led by Andrés Bonifacio, was a liberationist movement whose goal was independence from the 333 years of colonial control from Spain through armed revolt. The organization began to influence much of the Philippines. During a mass gathering in Caloocan, the leaders of the Katipunan organized themselves into a revolutionary government, named the newly established government Haring Bayang Katagalugan, and openly declared a nationwide armed revolution. Bonifacio called for an attack on the capital city of Manila. This attack failed; however, the surrounding provinces began to revolt. In particular, rebels in Cavite led by Mariano Álvarez and Emilio Aguinaldo (who were from two different factions of the Katipunan) won major early victories. A power struggle among the revolutionaries led to Bonifacio's death in 1897, with command shifting to Aguinaldo, who led the newly formed revolutionary government . That year, the revolutionaries and the Spanish signed the Pact of Biak-na-Bato, which temporarily reduced hostilities. Aguinaldo and other Filipino officers exiled themselves in the British colony of Hong Kong in southeast China. However, the hostilities never completely ceased.On April 21, 1898, after the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor and prior to its declaration of war on April 25, the United States launched a naval blockade of the Spanish colony island of Cuba, off its southern coast of the peninsula of Florida. This was the first military action of the Spanish–American War of 1898. On May 1, the U.S. Navy's Asiatic Squadron, under Commodore George Dewey, decisively defeated the Spanish Navy in the Battle of Manila Bay, effectively seizing control of Manila. On May 19, Aguinaldo, unofficially allied with the United States, returned to the Philippines and resumed attacks against the Spaniards. By June, the rebels had gained control of nearly all of the Philippines, with the exception of Manila. On June 12, Aguinaldo issued the Philippine Declaration of Independence. Although this signified the end date of the revolution, neither Spain nor the United States recognized Philippine independence.The Spanish rule of the Philippines officially ended with the Treaty of Paris of 1898, which also ended the Spanish–American War. In the treaty, Spain ceded control of the Philippines and other territories to the United States. There was an uneasy peace around Manila, with the American forces controlling the city and the weaker Philippines forces surrounding them.
On February 4, 1899, in the Battle of Manila, fighting broke out between the Filipino and American forces, beginning the Philippine–American War. Aguinaldo immediately ordered [t]hat peace and friendly relations with the Americans be broken and that the latter be treated as enemies. In June 1899, the nascent First Philippine Republic formally declared war against the United States.The Philippines would not become an internationally recognized independent state until 1946.

The Catholic Church in the Philippines (Filipino: Simbahang Katólika, Simbahang Katóliko; Spanish: Iglesia Católica) is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual direction of the Pope. The Philippines is one of the two nations in Asia having a substantial portion of the population professing the Catholic faith, aside from East Timor, and the third largest in the world after Brazil and Mexico. The episcopal conference responsible in governing the faith is the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines.
Christianity was introduced in the Philippine islands by Spanish missionaries and colonists, who arrived in waves beginning in the early 16th century in Cebu. Compared to the Spanish Era, when Christianity was recognized as the state religion, the faith today is practiced in the context of a secular state. In 2015, it was estimated that 84 million Filipinos, or roughly 82.9% of the population, profess the Catholic faith.
