Recording choir of St Mary's Cathedral Edinburgh Scotland
This video is an introduction to the choristers at St Mary's Music School and the choir of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland. We see the young choristers and organists as they prepare in June, 2006, for recording sessions for the Pro Organo CD Hear My Words, Ye People.
The Choir of St Mary's Cathedral (Mother Church of the Diocese of Edinburgh in the Scottish Episcopal Church) has been described by the Sunday Times as one of the UK's finest cathedral choirs. It is unique in Scotland in maintaining a tradition of daily Anglican choral services. The choristers are educated at St Mary's Music School, Scotland's only specialist music school, which is also the choir school for the cathedral. St Mary's Cathedral became the first in the UK to offer girls scholarships to sing as trebles in 1978, and in 2006, became possibly the first British daily choral foundation to offer alto Choral Scholarships and Lay Clerk positions to women as well as men. St Mary's Cathedral website is: cathedral.net . St Mary's Music School website is: st-marys-music-school.co.uk
The choir is led in this video by Simon Nieminski nieminski.com , who at the time this video and CD were recorded, was Organist and Master of the Music. Mr Nieminski is still active in Edinburgh, but now concentrates upon his work as both a liturgical and concert organist. His new post is that of organist at St Mary's RC Cathedral in Edinburgh.
Also seen in this video is a principal of St Mary's Music School, and Judy Brown, an adult alto in the choir. Organists seen in the video are Organ Scholar Ruaraidh Sutherland and Assistant Organist Duncan Ferguson.
Music heard in the video: At the choir rehearsal, and also the organist's rehearsal, we hear excerpts from the extended anthem entitled Hear My Words, Ye People by Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry. In the recording session video in the Cathedral, the choir sings O for a closer walk with God by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. The Stanford anthem can be downloaded as a high-quality MP3 file for only US$1.00 by finding it in the Choral section of the download site: mypipes.org
The organ of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, seen and heard in this video is a 1870s vintage Father Henry Willis organ, which has been maintained and well cared for over many decades by Harrison & Harrison. Harrison and Harrison's website is: harrison-organs.co.uk

Libera St Marys Cathedral Edinburgh (Post Concert)
After the concert in St Marys Cathedral, the Libera boys came back on stage, and allowed the people still remaining, an opportunity to take some photos. I didnt trust my camera with the low lighting, so took a small video instead. They were great once again. If you ever get the chance to see them live, then dont hesitate in doing so!

St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland
*Sorry about the shakiness in the beginning and my lil Dr. Who joke towards the end ;)
Recently Joe and I went to St. Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland. The architecture is amazing and incredibly detailed. Entry is free, but the recommended donation is £3. If you’d like to take photographs or video you need to obtain a £2 photo permit. (Note that this doesn’t apply to Weddings. Wedding photography is only allowed if you got married in the Cathedral).
Fun Fact: the “Cathedral” is actually a church since no Bishop sits there anymore.
The St. Giles Cathedral was named after St. Giles the patron saint of Edinburgh, cripples, and lepers. It was founded in the 12th century, but the Thistle Chapel was added in 1911 for Knights by order of the Queen. The gorgeous stained glass was added in the late 19th century to replace the leaded windows. There are tombs within the Cathedral for the Marquis of Argyll and the Marquis of Montrose. You can also do a rooftop tour for views of the Royal Mile for £6 per person with a group of up to 4 people.
The Cathedral is open all year round for visitors except for around New Years and Christmas. During Summer (May through September) the hours are Monday through Friday 9 am -7 pm, Saturday 9 am-5 pm and Sunday for services. Winter hours are Monday through Saturday 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday for services. During the week they also have a 10 minute service at noon daily.
St. Giles Cathedral also has a gift shop and café. For more information please check out their website.

Interior Song School St Mary's Cathedral Edinburgh Scotland
Tour Scotland video of the interior of the Song School by St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral on ancestry visit to Edinburgh. The Song School within the nearby Cathedral precinct is used by the Choristers for daily practice, where they are surrounded by beautiful murals by Phoebe Anna Traquair. It was these murals added between 1888 and 1892, which won Traquair national recognition. Within a tunnelled ceiling interior the East Wall depicts the cathedral clergy and choir. The South depicts Traquair's admired contemporaries such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, and George Frederic Watts; the North, birds and choristers sing together. The West shows the four beasts singing the Sanctus
O, Clap Your Hands (Gibbons) — Choir of St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh
The Choir of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh, under the direction of Timothy Byram-Wigfield, perform Tudor composer Orlando Gibbons' exuberant anthem 'O, Clap Your Hands Together'. Gibbons' anthem, which takes its text from the jubilant Psalm 47, is a staple of Ascension Day services alongside such joyous anthems as Stanord's 'Coelos Ascendit Hodie' and Finzi's 'God is Gone Up', which is rooted in the same psalm.
[ Text: ]
O, clap your hands together, all ye people!
For the Lord is high, and to be feared; he is the great king of all the earth.
He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.
He shall choose out an heritage for us, even the worship of Jacob, whom he loved.
God is gone up with a merry noise, and the Lord with the sound of the trumpet.
O sing praises unto our God: O sing praises unto the Lord our king.
For God is the king of all the earth: sing ye praises with the understanding.
God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon his holy seat.
For God, which is highly exalted, doth defend the earth, as it were with a shield.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.
