USA Shortline St. Mary's Railroad (Georgia)
The Saint Marys Railroad is a shortline operation based out of St. Marys, Georgia. The railroad has had a very interesting history and has been in continuous operation since its creation in 1865 as the Saint Marys and Kingsland Railroad by Captain Lemuel Jackson after receiving its charter from the State of Georgia that year. The railroad gained its name as Saint Marys in 1924 after it was reorganized from the remnants of the Atlantic, Waycross & Northern Railroad. These remnants of the AW&N remain entirely intact today, as the Saint Marys Railroad is an 11-mile operation running from the port of St. Marys to Kingsland, Georgia (where it connects with CSX) with a 3-mile spur serving the Kings Bay submarine base. In this video SM 506 (SW-1200RS) can be seen triumphantly leading a local near Saint Mary's, Georgia. Since 1960 this locomotive has been hauling freight trains, this locomotive was originally a CPR (Canadian Pacific) locomotive. The St. Marys River is a 126-mile-long (203 km) river in the southeastern United States. It forms a portion of the border between the U.S. states of Georgia and Florida. The river also serves as the southernmost point in the state of Georgia.
St Marys Railroad: Meet at Midway. October 12, 2014
Using Lehigh Valley Coal Company's 126, an 0-6-0T built in 1930, the St. Marys Railroad in Georgia ran four round trips on October 4 and 7 and 11 and 12. These Saturday and Sunday trips sold out pretty quickly, giving several hundred young and old a chance to smell coal smoke drifting back as they clattered through the woods and marshes on a ten-mile round trip. I learned that the Noon trip on Sunday the 12th would meet a freight train from Kingsland at Midway, five miles from St. Marys, where the steamer runs around the train for the trip back. I found how to get to the siding, which is just south of Georgia 40 and west of the St. Marys Road overpass. After shooting the train leaving, I took more footage of the meet. An unusual occurrence, presented here for your enjoyment.

The St. Marys RR engine number 506, Trustee, leads a local through Kingsland, Ga. on Thursday August 4th. I missed this train on Monday but got it today. I love the classic sound of an SW1200-SR and its three chime horn. My catch of the day.

St. Marys Railroad Excursion Train- October 5, 2013
I went forty miles up to St. Marys, Georgia, this morning to photograph this train. It was the beginning of a new service on the SM, held in conjunction with the 41st Annual Rock Shrimp Festival. I'm not interested in arthropods- I want the train! It was sold out, so I went to this spot to get some video. I remember years ago seeing the little yard here crammed with SM boxcars and wood-chip hoppers of various roads. With the closing of the Gilman (later Durango) paper mill, it's been rough for this shortline. I hope this makes it.
